Swords & Soldiers hits Europe May 15, US 'soon'

Ronimo Games, developer of Wii sleeper de Blob, has announced that its next game -- the side-scrolling FPS Swords & Soldiers -- will hit Europe on May 15. The distinctly designed WiiWare release will cost 1000 points.
"B-but what about us?," you ask. We're assuming you're in the US, so we have some good (albeit vague) news: Ronimo has also confirmed that game will hack-'n'-slash its way Stateside soon after the EU release. Here's hoping that "soon" means the following Monday, May 18.

Swords & Soldiers: now with Morefun
How many games task players with defending "their freakishly large pepper?" Not enough, that's how many. Won't someone please think of the freakishly large pepper? We knew that Ronimo Games' Swords & Soldiers, the 2D side-scrolling strategy game, was very pretty, and very funny, but it wasn't until this latest trailer and its press release that we knew just how wonderfully weird it is.
The press release names, among the strategy game's features, "historical inaccuracy" and "Morefun™," which is described as "Ronimo's patent pending version of fun that makes games interesting and enjoyable to play. Imagine playing a game, that at the same time is actually fun. Powerful stuff."
Swords & Soldiers could be out as soon as this month, but we wouldn't bet our freakishly large peppers on it. It's already been delayed once, and that vague "early 2009" at the end of the trailer isn't promising.

Check out Swords & Soldiers in action
Upcoming WiiWare game Swords & Soldiers promises to be a fun time. Ever since it was revealed, we've been smitten by a most amazing and charming artistic style, as well as the prospect of some fun and fresh RTS action. It seems like a potent mix, one which demands attention and will not be ignored. And, after watching the trailer above, Swords & Soldiers has our full attention.
Swords & Soldiers is currently scheduled for release in February of next year.

Scheduling change for Swords & Soldiers
Attention, fans of de original PC de Blob project: Ronimo Games' Joost van Dongen can be heard in the (rather meandering) Hear Mii podcast, in a very long interview. Unfortunately, that lengthy discussion contains a bit of bad news: his company's fantastic-looking WiiWare RTS Swords & Soldiers will slip from its original Q4 2008 date (there aren't that many dates left in Q4 2008!) to February of next year.
We don't really expect to know when any WiiWare game is going to come out anyway, so we're taking this delay announcement in stride. Mostly we're just happy to be reminded of Swords & Soldiers and to have an excuse to post this concept art from the official site.

Swords & Soldiers & Stick Figures
If Swords & Soldiers, the side-scrolling WiiWare RTS by Ronimo Games, didn't already have such an excellent style, we'd be calling for them to switch to the look used in this video explaining how the game works. But would that hew too closely to Defend Your Castle's DIY look?
As for the gameplay itself, it looks delightfully simple. You send soldiers and other units from your castle on one side of the screen to your opponent's castle on the other side, and they do their thing. Workers gather gold from the enemy castle, warriors hack up dudes with their axes, and so on. Rather than sitting helpless as your soldiers are mauled, you'll have access to spells, which you aim with the pointer.
Maybe we can compromise and convince Ronimo to keep the voice acting from this video.

De Blob creators make original RTS for WiiWare

No price has been revealed for the game, currently placed in a Q4 2008 launch window. Consider our interests officially piqued.

An original RTS on Wii? It's Swords & Soldiers!
We don't want to go jumping the gun on this one, but if there's a title that could come anywhere near rivaling the excitement we have for another WiiWare title, Mega Man 9, then this is it. Developed by the students that created de Blob (the original, not the still-awesome-looking THQ game set to release on Wii), Swords & Soldiers is "a sidescrolling real time strategy game." It features three different factions, all "battling for the powers of the gods." The game will be comprised of a single-player campaign mode, as well as support for a splitscreen multiplayer mode (local only, though). It's also promised to include "several other game modes."
Look for Swords & Soldiers to hit WiiWare in all regions during Q4 of this year. Be sure to check out the first screens in our gallery below. The artistic style is amazing.
