With the holiday season fast approaching, our minds have wandered to the joy of receiving gifts and, more importantly, giving them. We then thought about the gaming gifts we've bestowed upon friends and family in the past. What about you all? Have you given (or plan to give away) any gaming gifts recently? Are most of your friends and families hip to gaming, whether it be Wii or some other form, or do you do your part through charities like Child's Play? To enter, just leave a comment here (with a valid e-mail address!) and tell us what your favorite Mega Man boxart is (hit up the gallery below if you missed this). There's a catch, though. You must be a current and legal resident of the United States with an American Wii (sorry, Canadians, we have to leave you out of this one; blame the gifting system and not us!) and 18 years of age or older. You may enter once per day between now and Sunday, September 28th at 11:59pm ET. The contest comes to a close that night and we'll select a winner via random drawing the next day. Questions? Activision giving away free guitar with World Tour preorders

The company just announced the scheme, but don't get too excited, because there are a couple of disclaimers to this. One: as far as we can tell, this is currently a UK-only offer (one that includes all online and high street retailers). Two: you do have to buy the full band set, which is currently going for around £150 at most online stores; still, this does allow you to have a bass player in your band from the get-go. Here, Activision, have some props from us.

We hesitate to post the soul-crushing video you see above -- it may put a damper on your whole day. You see, many of us have fond holiday memories of tearing through sheets of glossy paper and ribbons to reveal the greatest present a kid can receive -- a new gaming console. To see one family pervert those cherished memories by presenting young Jonathan with an Xbox 360 box filled with clothes just brings us irrevocably down, in a manner that only "Beaches" used to be capable of.
Those sweethearts at Engadget are attempting to contact Jonathan and his rapscallion parents to hook the kid up with a real 360 -- hopefully, they'll send Jonathan's folks a little something too. Perhaps a wrapped-up, car-shaped pile of parenting books left in their driveway would fit the bill.

For those of you who picked up Pokemon Battle Revolution on the Wii, there's a special mystery gift awaiting you. Once you get the gift, which you can receive by solving a couple of click-happy puzzles set up by Nintendo, you can transfer it to your copy of Pokemon Diamond and/or Pearl on your DS. So what is the gift?

Of course, they won't be available until April of this year, so this is only an opportunity to preorder. Each set will cost $22, with a variety of different balls on offer.

Look at this girl. She is totally freaking out about her new DS. Just totally - freaking - out. We couldn't care less that Christmas is long behind us, as is the entire 2007 year; we felt it our duty to show you this photo of a girl going absolutely banoodles as she unwraps her gift.
You've likely already deduced our intentions from the article image and title -- we're cashing in on last week's wildly popular installment of The DS Life with a hastily-put-together sequel. As is often the case with these repeat productions, we've done away with the charm of the original, replacing it with a bigger budget and an all new video cast!

Provided they were on Santa's "Nice" list, hundreds of thousands of children (and adults, of course) woke up to find a dual-screened handheld under their tree yesterday. We like to imagine that these new DS owners held the system box high over their heads while The Legend of Zelda's "item fanfare" music played. We also like to picture them running to their computers shortly afterwards to load up and bookmark DSFanboy.com, as well.
Rather than spend too much time dwelling over what their reactions might have been like, why don't we take a look past the break for photos from ten different post-unwrapping scenes?

Bowl organizers pick up Wii for college athletes

If you've been out on the street like some kind of gumshoe, tracking down leads and putting in face time with store manager after store manager as you hunt down that Wii that certain someone in your life is looking for, you might have someone besides Nintendo to be angry with. Bowl officials responsible for the upcoming college bowl games (championship games) managed to snatch up tons of Wiis as a gift to those participating in these games. It's apparently some kind of effort to promote their games over others.Three of the national championship games will award participants from the schools with Nintendo's latest console. That comes to about 750 total consoles being gifted. That's no small number to scoff at, if we may say so.

Valve enables 'Steam'y gift purchasing

Adding an option that is sure to never be used by grandma, Valve's Steam service now offers gift purchasing functionality. The concept is pretty simple -- once again, not for grandma -- a customer simply purchases a game off the Steam service and then has the option to gift it to someone else. The recipient of the gift receives an e-card which holds their hand (virtually) through the Steam download process.The Steam selection is expansive with possibly career-ending games like Kane & Lynch and the recently released Universe at War: Earth Assault available. Go ahead and poke around the Steam store, it might save you a trip to the mall -- maybe even save a forward-thinking grandma a trip to the mall.

Now that the Virtual Console gift feature is alive and kicking, it just seems fitting that we celebrate with a few gifts of our own. Each member of the Wii Fanboy staff has carefully chosen one game currently available on the U.S. Virtual Console, and we're ready to show our appreciation by gifting the lot to one lucky reader. But guys! What if I already have the game in question? Well, dear reader, we've also each chosen back-up titles, just in case. If the winner has one, we'll move onto the next. If you have all of them? Maybe you should hang back and let someone else win! 'Tis the season of giving, after all.To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling us what you'd be most likely to give away, if you were so inclined. Wii Warm Up: Across the universe

While we certainly expected region-locking on the new gifting feature, we can't say we're too pleased about the country-lock. Sure, we'll grant that there are a lot of reasons for Nintendo to make such a decision -- legal reasons, currency issues, rights issues ... there's bound to be all sorts of things we haven't considered. It seems likely that Nintendo would want us to be able to freely gift. Or at least, to gift as freely as possible.Or would they? Despite the DS, the region-free wonder that it is, Nintendo is still very focused on friend codes and encouraging people to play together, in the same room. Do you think that one of the reasons for the country-lock was to encourage people to continue the close-friends-only tradition of gaming interaction? What other factors do you think led to the decision?
