Thwomp (17 of 19)
Thwomp
First appearance: Super Mario Bros. 3
Relatives and variants: Thwimp, Whomp, Grindel
Special characteristics: comprised of stone and usually covered in spikes, grave and intimidating demeanor
Thwomp is bad-to-the-stone. He's immune to almost every possible attack save for the strobing invincibility of Starman, which trumps everything. In a world of smiling characters, Thwomp has always been pissed off. It might be because he is a giant square block with no means to freely move about his environment, except continually up and down his designated stomp track. It might be because he only gets a single chance to crush Mario, and if he misses he has to spend the rest of his life wallowing in failure. In the 64-bit generation, Thwomp was rendered as a blue cube without spikes, making him appear bald, which is potentially another reason why he is very angry. He can be found lurking on the ceilings anywhere Mario might pass through--castles, Mario Party boards, Mario Kart tracks or Galaxy planets.
