Taking advantage
While not peripherals, technically, these controllers, which released on both the NES and SNES, helped Nintendo realize that just a traditional game controller might not be enough. If Nintendo didn't constantly strive to innovate, they would most certainly perish.

A peripheral is any device not orginally packaged with the system, so these controllers are very much so "technically" peripherals. Also, there really wan't much that was innovative about these controllers at the time excpet for the fact that they were usually more widely available than many third-party arcade style setups. There were others made before and around the same time but these are simply the ones most people remember.

Ah, the old days. I miss my NES now. Those Turbo buttons were like coffee breaks for my thumb.
