Show and Tell: A Tale of Some Kirbys

When Chrismix sent us pictures of a pink lantern Kirby, we were so bowled over by the cuteness that there was no other option than this: dedicating this week's Show and Tell to the little pink guy. Thus did we set out, scouring the harsh planes of these wild internets in search of custom Kirby swag. Interested in what we found? Take the guided tour here, or jump right into the gallery below.

Show and Tell: Off the beaten costume path

Okay, listen -- not everyone appreciates cosplay, and that's cool. Hopefully, even if you don't, you can at least give the creators their due. We sure like to, because some really dedicated fans can put together wonderful costumes ... costumes so wonderful we have no choice but to appreciate their cosplay!

But we see lots of Mario and Link and the usual suspects, so during these special community spotlights, we like to shy away from the typical. In our last look at cosplay, we saw characters from some of the best DS games represented, but this time, we just looked for more unusual selections. Take the guided tour of our findings here, or just jump right into the gallery below.

Show and Tell: Mega Fandom

Here's a show-and-tell-ish confession for you: I love the Mega Man sprite. I think he's just about the cutest thing ever, which meant he was a clear choice for a Show and Tell session. This foray was made easier by the fact that I'm clearly not alone in this opinion -- there's Mega Man stuff everywhere. If it can be pieced together out of blocks, there's a retro Mega Man version of it, and this week, we're celebrating some of the great fan-made creations we've seen. Take the guided tour right here, or simply jump into the gallery below to enjoy Mega Man.

Show and Tell: The more the merrier

Not long ago, reader Josh sent us pictures of a "DS beach party" -- that is, a group of friends partying at the beach, and playing DS together during downtime. That's relaxation we can get behind. But not only were the pictures great to see (thanks, Josh!), but it got us thinking about other group DS experiences. The handheld is so well-suited to group play, just as with the Wii, that we figured there were plenty of examples from the greater gaming community, and that's what we're sharing with you today in our gamer spotlight. Take the guided tour here, or jump right into our gallery of group sessions, if you prefer.

Show and Tell: The holiday spirit

While we're often awash in gamer crafts -- particularly in this space! -- we just don't see that many holiday-themed gamer projects. Every year there's the occasional tree or set of ornaments, but it just seems there should be more. We dug around and managed to find a few interesting projects, however, and the results range from edibles to a pixelated tree. Just jump into the gallery below to check out holiday projects!

Show and Tell: Mario as inspiration

This lovely Mario-inspired painting has been floating around the Internet for a couple of days, and thanks to Orioto of deviantART, who is responsible for the piece, we decided to delve into decidedly-different looks at Nintendo's flagship plumber. This week's community spotlight shines on all the other Marios who exist outside of the realm of Nintendo's Mushroom Kingdom. Take the guided tour right here, or jump into the gallery below if you are so inclined.

Show and Tell: Lunch in a box

We've spent a little time admiring amazing lunches before, but we haven't yet donated our weekly time in the community spotlight to the fine art of bento-making ... until today. Yes, friends, today we're going to make you hungry with these fantastic Nintendo-themed boxed lunches. Slice up some carrot and mold your rice into a ball, then head into our gallery and check out some amazing gamer bento.

Show and Tell: And buttons for all

Buttons are important to gamers. Usually, they're our primary method of input, and while some systems (why hello, Nintendo) may be moving us away from that tradition, we'll always have a soft spot for those little buttons.

But we're not talking about those sorts of buttons today. We just like 'em. No, we're taking a look at the other sort today, the kind you wear. Badges. Pins. Sometimes, they can be just as important as the buttons on our handhelds and controllers -- if you want to display your likes and dislikes, anyway. And badge-making has long been quite the thing among the crafty gaming contingent. Take the guided tour of our selection of game-related buttons here, or dip into the gallery below wherever you'd like. You might be surprised at what you find.

Show and Tell: The Chrono crew

With the highly-anticipated release of Chrono Trigger, it seemed a good time to take a moment to celebrate all the love the game has seen over time. Well, perhaps not all the love, but some of the crafts, cosplay, and art the game's fans have put together.

Take the guided tour right here, or jump into the gallery below if you prefer to be a little more free with the space-time continuum ... or, uh, our Show and Tell presentation.

Show and Tell: Edibles

Gamer cakes, cookies, and cupcakes have become a staple of the community, because hey, we've all gotta eat. But there's no reason your food should be at all normal! There's no canvas like the edible canvas, and because of that (or maybe because we're hungry), we're shining this week's community spotlight on sweet treats (with a gaming spin). Take the guided tour here, or just hop right into the gallery below!

Show and Tell: Castlevania

You see a lot of homemade mushrooms and Tetris furniture, Space Invaders clothes and hardware shirts around here, but despite our frequent focus on fan-made items, we rarely see anything inspired by Castlevania -- except, of course, for cosplay. For that reason, we're focusing this week's edition of Show and Tell on one our favorite franchises and its fans.

Jump right into the gallery below for the Castlevania community experience, or take the guided tour if you prefer.

Show and Tell: Post-Halloween wrap-up

We talked about Halloween last month, as people were first beginning to think about the holiday, but now that it's past, it's time for us to revisit the topic. Specifically, we have to look at costumes! Gamers always seem so enthusiastic about their costumes, and they're rarely something you can throw together at the last minute with handy items from around the house.

If you're feeling particularly rebellious, you can bounce right into the gallery and make your own way around. If not, we've got a guided tour prepared, just for you.

Show and Tell: Oh, Mama!

It's no wonder we're seeing Mama branch out -- Cooking Mama spawned a ridiculous amount of love, even if it didn't break any sales records. The shining face of Mama (or the image of her fiery eyes) is fast becoming a staple in the gamer crafting and cosplay communities. Mama's out of the kitchen, so we're dedicating this week's Show and Tell to her!

Take the guided tour by starting right here, or be reckless and jump right into the gallery below.

Show and Tell: One dedicated community

We've been talking a lot about Mother 3 recently, and for good reason: the fan community is one of the strongest around, and they function without even a scrap of official love. Still, they soldier on, translating games, and, even better for us in this space, they make things.

Of course, a fan translation is about the biggest DIY project we could feature here, but we've already done that. Instead, let's talk other things Mother, and by that, we mean crafts and similarly fun and frivolity. Take the tour of our picks, or just jump right into the gallery below.

Show and Tell: We salute you, Game Boys

We've said goodbye to the GBA, but it's not dead yet, and never will be if these people have a say. Modders and artists keep systems alive and relevant even after everyone else has forgotten about them. The Game Boy name and changing face has been a favorite of modders for some time, and today for Show and Tell, we're going to celebrate a small part of that.
