BBFC: Sega compiling Sonic games for DS

According to the rating, it'll feature Sonic 1-3, plus Sonic and Knuckles -- with the ability to virtually "Lock-on" and play as Knuckles in the older games. Also included in the shockingly specific list of in-game content: Sonic Chronicles and "The History of Sonic" video content and the art gallery.
We can only hope it turns out better than Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis on GBA.

Damn right. Sonic Genesis on GBA was a nightmare. When I got my copy I thought I was scammed with a pirated cartridge.
Anyway, this is basically the kind of collection I was hoping to get for a home console (mostly for sonic 3 + knuckles), so I can retire my Genesis. But I guess I'll pick it up for my DS then.
BlueXArmed @ Nov 20th 2009 6:35PM
You know there are such collections available for every console, right?
Sonic Mega Collection for PS2/XBOX/GC(Wii)
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for PS3/360 (and not Wii, the bastards)
sparkster @ Nov 20th 2009 6:54PM
Oh? I thought you wouldn't be able to use the lock-on features in these. So I should reconsider and rather get one of the home console ones.
GewurztraminerX @ Nov 20th 2009 7:15PM
The lock-on works on the Sonic Mega Collection, but not the more recent Genesis Collection.

"We can only hope it turns out better than Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis on GBA."
Sega provided the GBA with THREE original, very fast 2D Sonic games, and they were very good.
i STILL can't understand how Sonic Genesis became such a disaster.
Taijo @ Nov 20th 2009 6:59PM
2D sonic games with momentum? 2d sonic games where sonic doesn't stop moving forward in mid-air just because I stopped pressing the directional button? On my Nintendo DS?
YES, PLEASE!
GewurztraminerX @ Nov 20th 2009 7:17PM
I didn't think it would be possible for me to be convinced to get the original Sonic games for another system... I may have been wrong.
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Nov 20th 2009 7:23PM
Sonic being ported again?
... Okay, I'll buy it. Goddamn you, Sega.
But... why not more than just the obvious? C'mon, you could squeeze Sonic CD in there... or maybe something that HASN'T been ported 110M times: Knuckles' Chaotix.
GewurztraminerX @ Nov 20th 2009 7:45PM
here, here. I have yet to play either for any extended period of time.
tkAshur @ Nov 20th 2009 7:59PM
I'm sorry to say that yah, I don't think we'll see Knuckles Chaotix ever again. I think it probably has to do with Sega horribly regretting ever making the 32X, and anything that was made for it fell into that regret.
Shame, it was a fun game and it looked and played great. And Sonic CD NEVER gets the attention from sega it deserves.
If Sega keeps this porting junk up, they should at least make a crazy version, where you can say lock sonic and knuckles up to Sonic CD and play as knuckles in Sonic CD, or switcheroo the whole thing and make it so you can play as Sonic or Tails in Knuckles Chaotix. Heck, through in a ridiculous animation into the comp of shoving a cd onto a Sonic and Knuckles cart and the game firing up and it working would make me buy it ten times over.
Wiiplayer @ Nov 23rd 2009 4:07AM
I think it has more to do with SEGA being too lazy to write a 32X emulator, and that sadly Chaotix isn't popular enough compared with the Genesis games.
Or maybe they're saving Sonic CD and Chaotix for a second collection? I wouldn't put it past SEGA. "Sonic Classic Gems"?
Jacksons @ Nov 20th 2009 8:16PM
What an underwhelming collection. At least throw some more Genesis games on there to flesh it out. 4 games? That's worthless.
Mogster @ Nov 21st 2009 2:22PM
Four awesome games for the price of one? You're right, that is worthless.
J.K. @ Nov 20th 2009 8:21PM
Nice! Since they can't make good Sonic games anymore at all, this makes total sense as this would be a fine grab for anyone who wants a truly correct and fun way to play the hedgehog on the go.
nintendolink007 @ Nov 21st 2009 1:05AM
Well thats about $@#$ time too. I do own the Mega and Gems collection on gamecube, i will indeed buy this. Sadly Sonic CD sounds like it wont get ported.
RupeeClock @ Nov 21st 2009 7:30AM
It's been shown that Genesis can be emulated on the DS, so we should be lucky enough to see a good portable port this time. :)
There was also that unofficial Sonic 1 port for the GBA that proved a good port was possible, just wasn't done.
ViRGE @ Nov 21st 2009 8:42AM
Well yeah, technically it "can" be emulated, but even JenesisDS had its share of issues. The DS just isn't powerful enough to pull off perfect Genesis emulation. So either Sega does try to emulate this and we end up with something that's ultimately subpar, or they're going to try to port it. Porting it at least leaves the hope of everything going right, even if it's the option that failed the hardest last time.
RupeeClock @ Nov 21st 2009 6:18PM
Well as homebrew goes, you usually only have one person working a project in their spare time and without the official devkit.
Sega have people working on legal emulators ALL the time, I'm sure they will be able to get a better emulator working on the DS with a larger team and dedicated time.
If anything, maybe it'll be a DSi only title as to take advantage of the extra power.
INNUENDO 64 @ Nov 22nd 2009 4:10AM
this is one of the rare situations where i really hope its a port and not something new.
no please sega, anything but anything brand new!
Kokomadeta @ Nov 22nd 2009 5:38PM
This was on SegaNerds last week.
Skittles @ Nov 24th 2009 3:17AM
definitely getting this one. i hope they can manage to add a few more games...
NickAVV @ Nov 24th 2009 3:55PM
How many times do they need to put the old Sonic games on collection packs before they make a new Sonic game that doesn't suck? (knocks on wood for Needlemouse)
ryan_gliebe @ Nov 27th 2009 10:47PM
Sonic Team is either putting out crappy new games or re-re-releasing old ones in compilations... what they need to do is just had over the reigns to DIMPS and be done with Sonic the Hedgehog.
Possibly just lend their talents in creating boxart and/or instruction manuals. Y'know, things that can't possibly ruin a game.
