Portable GameCube hack brings Sunshine everywhere it goes
The disc drive out back may be a bit precariously placed, but 'Hailrazer"'s portable "NCube" reeks of everything we'd want in a handheld version of the last-gen Nintendo console (except for wireless multiplayer, of course). Engadget spotted the 90-hour-in-the-making portable GameCube over on – surprise, surprise! – the Ben Heck forums. A breakdown of the construction process can be found just after the break in video form, though you may want to set up the drool tray now before proceeding.
All set? Alright, now go ahead.

C'mon Nintendo, if one guy can make a portable gamecube, why can't you?

Well considering Nintendo has broken a bunch of Wii's with 2 of their last 3 updates, one must admit that Nintendo employees aren't as capable as some of the guys who do this sort of stuff for fun.
That said I'm sure they could do it, but why would they when they can release 4 versions of the DS? Hopefully whenever the casuals catch on to the system rehashing we can get a new handheld that's an actual upgrade and can support enhanced ports of Gamecube games. The enhancements made to SM64 on the DS were pretty cool (and worth the price when you consider how good many of the minigames were), I'd love something similar done for Sunshine.
Well that's enough ranting I guess, considering the 4th version of the DS isn't even out yet I imagine it will be a while (if ever) before we get a Nintendo handheld with that sort of power.

Rumor has it the next DS iteration (Not the DSi LL, but more like a "DS2") will have nVidia Tegra graphics. That would be quite awesome, and is exactly why I'm holding out on getting a DSi.

Exactly!
But I rather have a more compact hand-held with Gamecube or better graphics

Ben Heck isn't just "One Guy"; he's a force of nature. Besides, a company like Nintendo has a lot more logistical issues to worry about than an individual, such as licensing games, Quality Assurance/Control, Investors, etc.

Making a portable GameCube is well within their abilities. The problems are, can it be made portable, and can it be made cheaply?

I just wanna say that Wall-E Gamecube mod is epic. Possibly the best mod I've ever seen.

Oh sweet Jesus I want one.

That is pretty badass. I could very well pay money for that.

I can't wait until all the PSOne LCD screens are used up and these modders can get beyond that stupid circular design. Pretty good mod otherwise, though the exposed drive is a deal breaker.

that's a better build than a similer one we saw a few years back from a BH forumite (I believe) - nice, although the right stick and d-pad seem to pose possible awkward moments depending on the title.
I keep thinking about doing this with my cube and stuff like this makes me think more about it.
Nice freakin job, I would like to play some Eternal Darkness on it tonight when I go to bed.

the lure is too great for me now - I am going to build one.
how long it takes, I don't know - but starting today I am actively looking for housing options and ordering the parts I need, may explore other options for an LCD...although thr psone screen with speakers is just so convienant.
The housing and the controls are the big issue, modding pcb's isn't an issue for me.
Now I'm going to try to get a friend to donate me his cube, I want to preserve mine.

are you telling me I can be pooping and warm, no longer would I have to make a choice between the two.
sir here is a check with my name on it, write down any number on this piece of paper and I will pay it.
