Super Mario Galaxy commercial brings a tear to our eye

We're not afraid to admit that Ed Peduzzi's Super Mario Galaxy commercial gets us all misty. It's a powerful combination of Sigur Rós' "Hoppípolla" and the classic footage of Nintendo's Italian plumber, crescendoing in a mighty display of Super Mario Galaxy that really gave our heart strings a tug. Check it out for yourself past the break and if you don't get goosebumps, well you just may be a soulless husk of a human being.

...I haven't found me teary eyed in a long time (since Mario Galaxy, the storybook, that music...), but this, it's like a video about a big part of my life, all those memories...

I'm actually fairly recent to gaming, found a Gameboy Color in 2003, but DAMN that "commercial" made me want to buy Galaxy all over again. Maybe they'll release a sequel that has the same mechanics but new environments...?

That was amazing, gave me chills...

Being of the generation that ushered in the video game era, that "commercial" was more than just a nice summation of Mario. My whole life in a Mario timeline just flashed by there. It wasn't just seeing the games. It brought back all the memories of playing the Marios for the first time, at each phase and the friends and family I was with, the sleepovers, the birthdays, the Christmases, old girlfriends, college, the times around me, culminating with Galaxy being a Christmas present from my wife-to-be along with a Nintendo Wii mere days after we got engaged... that little plumber and I have been through a lot together.

I have to agree with everyone else on this. That video actually brought a tear to my eye. It just kind of made me hold my breath as it went on, realizing what a big part of my life Nintendo and Mario have been, and like was said before...made the times spent with all of these classic games (and yes, even Galaxy is a classic) flash to mind, thinking about the years of my life. Nintendo needs to snap that guy up FAST to work in their marketing division.

It made me have goosebumps, but if this was a commercial dedicated to The Legend of Zelda..I might be in tears right now.

If this becomes the commercial for Super Mario Galaxy 2, it would be awesome. What got me misty was the Sunshine to Galaxy transition and Mario & Princess floating in space. Commercials like this would make video games appear 'mature' and 'grown-up' because they tap into palpable emotions like music and films do. Not "hey, buy this because Gamestop or G4 tells you to."

Okay, so I've watched this a few more times to see if I was missing anything. I think maybe I've just played these games to death over the last 20ish years or I've seen many other Mario montages.

That really was good, aside from Super Mario Bros. 2 getting the shaft, that is. I mean, you include Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. but leave out Super Mario Bros. 2? Hell, they even left out both the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 and the American release (aka reworked Doki Doki Panic). Both games are great, but they both seem to be considered lesser Mario games by many people (which is BS, they are both incredible games within the series, and two of the best reasons to have ever owned a NES/Famicom).

Yes Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 wasn't released in the US until it appeared on the All Stars cartridge for SNES under a different name, and didn't really introduce anything new other than the levels themselves and a Megaman-esque level of difficulty, and granted that USA SMB 2 was essentially Doki Doki Panic, but who cares? Personnally I liked both games a great deal better than Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine. Take a stand! Stop the SMB 2 hate! I need a support group here, my SMB 2 feelings have been trampled upon once again and I just can't take the hate (or in this case, indifference) any longer.

That was brilliant. This sums up so much of Nintendo's appeal. Of course there's the nostalga factor, but how many games could truly pull something like that off? If you showed a video like that with Halo footage to one of the series's fans 20 years after the franchise started, the response would most likely be, "Yup, those were great games that helped push the shooter genre." But show that footage to a long time Mario fan, and he'll be on the verge of tears at least. Nintendo's games do so well at creating pure unbridled fun, that even something as simple as the Mario games can be breathtaking.

So yeah, Nintendo, hire that guy for next year's E3. You'll make a lot of fans very happy.
