RPG Maker DS: Make RPGs on the DS
The long-running RPG Maker series has appeared on PC, Super Famicom, PlayStation, and other home systems, but now Japanese game designers will be able to make portable RPGs. Using the RPG Maker DS software, players can create characters, environments, monsters, set sound effects and music, and even create special "event" items like chests and save points. All the screens show premade monster and character graphics being used -- from some 800 character pieces, 150 sounds, and 1500 map features, but you'll be able to make your own if you're patient enough (the stylus helps in that regard). There's also some kind of wireless support, though we don't know if it means you'll get to share your elaborate, strategic Twilight fanfic scenario online or not.
RPG Maker DS will be out January 28. We're really hoping Agetec, who has published RPG Makers in North America, picks this one up for us. It's hard enough to play RPGs in Japanese, much less make them.

Man, I hope this would definitely come to the US, seeing how DL-onlies are twice the price of typical DS games.

I would give up my PS2 just for this one game >

I sure hope it's a better improvement than RPG Maker 3.
Sure, it made it easier to make things and it was more streamlined than RPG Maker 2, but it was just so limited.
RPG Maker 2 was awesome..

I would give up both of my PS2s.
Well as long as it has an eventing system as good as RMXP / RMVX.

Great! I really hope this comes to North America since I JUST got back into RPG maker XP... Which this one, clearly, looks like. I have high hopes for this.
RPG maker 3 wasn't even that bad. Yes, limited, but without thinking of the other games, I feel that it held up to most of my expectations.

Woah, unexpected! Maybe with this on my DS I'll finnaly end up making a complete game, I've been playing around with these on the PC since RPG Maker 2000! =P

If this game doesn't come to the U.S. I will make sure I import it!

The latest PC version, RPG Maker VX, was released in the US. This may well be as well.

Now the DS has, in theory, INFINITE RPGS!!! (What else is new? XD)
ecco6t9 @ Oct 16th 2009 2:24AM
Maybe Nintendo would be so kind to pick this one up?

Wow, they're *really* plagiarizing the Dragon Quest series now. I mean, I know they always have in one way or another, and I know that DQ is sort of the prototypical RPG in the strictest sense, but damn. That screenshot almost made me think it *was* a Dragon Quest game, the DS interface is almost exactly the same.
Bluebreaker @ Oct 16th 2009 3:53PM
You know, that screenshot makes it look like Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest made a game together....
Now, I'll HAVE to buy this if it comes over!

Took them long enough. Did they spend 4 years making this game or did they only just now realize that DS existed?
I'd be excited for this if I wasn't so bitter about this franchise stubbornly humping the PS2's leg for so long.

Actually, this isn't the first portable RPG Maker that Enterbrain has released - they did one for the GBA as well and it was pretty solid. This definitely looks like it's going to be a bigger hit though, and it's a lot simpler even than the RPG Makers for the PC. Although it's still a bit limited, there is a really cool feature utilizing DS Download Play in this one - you can download somebody's created RPG straight from their cart without owning RPG Maker DS yourself (although you won't be able to save it to your DS... but it's still a cool way to try a creation out.)
