Pokemon Mystery Dungeon for WiiWare: first trailer and details

Surprise! The WiiWare Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, first revealed in a McDonalds-distribted flyer, are real, and are headed for Japan on August 4. Players will be able to share save data throughout all three games, so they can level up a persistent team.

The three games (Advance! Fire Adventure Team, Go! Storm Adventure Team, and Aim! Light Adventure Team!) each feature a different set of starting Pokemans. And in this game, your team can cooperate even more than in other Pokemon games, by piling up and attacking enemies simultaneously. The WiiWare game also features the "rescue" ability found in recent Shiren the Wanderer games, in which friends can revive your team over the Wi-Fi Connection.

After the break, we've embedded a trailer that details these features -- and shows off the adorable little Pokemon.

These are pretty good games, but if you like them you owe it to yourself to pick up Shiren the Wanderer (either the DS version or the upcoming localization of Shiren 3). It's amazing what a fantastic roguelike that is.

I hate to bash a game for its graphics, but these are the same models used from Ranch. They were awful then and they're awful now, why are they still using them? I can forgive the DS games for using multiple versions, with all the trading that goes on, etc, but is it really necessary to have THREE versions for *this*?

The Mystery Dungeon games are some of the laziest produced games I've ever seen, and this is taking it to a whole new level..

Ranch was rather excusable to, since it was the Wii equivalent of the console-storage-boxes in earlier Pokemon Stadium games, and given WiiWare's limitations and the fact that they had to make 493 separate 3D models, plus a few for the pokemon that have alternate forms (Like Wormadam, or whatever its called), and then also a little extra data for shinies, and for trainers and environments.

In this case, they might be able to afford to amp up the res. Not sure.

I wonder what the pricing/differences will be, and particularly how the three games will interact with one another (if at all).

Each version costs $12, and save data from one can be used within another. That allows for Pokemon in one version to be used in another (like the traditional Pokemon games).

So is this separate from the Pokemon beat-em-up that's also coming to WiiWare?

Yeah, completely seperate. I'd say the only things that both have in common are that the games are entirely 3D and that they share the same horrible Pokemon Ranch sprites.

(Even though they share the same sprites though, I think that so far, these Dungeon games have environments that look a lot better. Better to the point in which I couldn't tell if those were reused Pokemon Ranch sprites or not for a while.)

That said, aside from the awkward stacking thing, I'm interested in seeing how they handle this. The story's supposed to be about Arceus, and I think fellow Pokemon Mystery Dungeon fans know that these Dungeon games have pretty good stories by Pokemon standards.

From the looks of it, the only difference between each game so far is the starters (which Joystiq didn't mention when I sent this info in, but that's okay).

Doesn't matter though, you can tell which starters are in which game by the video.

I saw Cyndaquil in the trailer. I suppose they just didn't choose to show him as one of the fire starters over Vulpix. Vulpix had massive fan appeal from the first game.

No love for grass starters, it looks like. Unless they made the versions like this because the plot might have something to do with the 2nd gen legendaries.
