PSA: Club Nintendo status reset coming June 30
Attention Club Nintendo members: on June 30 your membership status will be reset. According to an email being distributed by Nintendo, via Aeropause, users attempting to claw their way to Gold elite and Platinum member status for Nintendo's buyer program will have their efforts reset at the end of next month.
Here's the skinny: Coins (points obtained by registering games/hardware, taking surveys and buying WiiWare and DSiWare titles) are only valid toward a user's Club Nintendo status within the year they are purchased. The Club Nintendo year runs from July 1 until June 30. Users will not lose any coins they've collected (although they can expire), but will have their membership status reset when the year is over.
In order to achieve Gold or Platinum status again, users must collect the necessary amount of coins within the year. Gold membership status begins at 300 coins, Platinum begins at 600 -- as a reference point, the DSi nets users 150 coins. Club Nintendo Gold and Platinum members are awarded special bonuses by Nintendo, in the form of a unique gift at the end of the calendar year. Like Aeropause, we recommend you hold off on any activity that may net you coins ... for the sake of your Club Nintendo street cred.

The whole thing still doesn't work for me. When will they reset that?
Phil @ May 26th 2009 10:23PM
The problems with the site disappeared for me shortly after launch.
I had to clear my browser history and cache to get it working. Maybe that'll help you too.
mr nimblewick @ May 27th 2009 12:33AM
I one-upped you. I changed computers. Perhaps it doesn't work in Safari, but I sure as hell ain't downloading IE.
z3r0w1n9 @ May 27th 2009 11:20AM
Download IE? For the Mac? No, you're not... that software hasn't been updated in almost six years! Ever heard of Firefox? (Lots of sites don't work with Safari, mostly because only about 9% of web wanderers use it...)

I have been trying to find out how Club Nintendo will reward my Platinum status this year, but I can't get any clues from calling various Nintendo offices. I think they just pull something out of their "genius butt" once it's time.
Some gifts have been lame in the past, but I have high hopes for this year as it took more to get to Platinum compared to before.

I have a lot of points, but it took ages to get this dumb game and watch game. I didnt open it because I'd rather just have it for my collection. Still, there isnt too many appealing things to save up for now. Im holding off registering the Dsi since Ive heard about the reset thing. Whatever you get for having a platinum status, it better be good.

I just got gold with Punch Out so that's cool. But then I took another survey and got some coins which I guess were wasted b/c I'm not going to get to platinum before July.

As a diehard Nintendo fan of nearly 3 decades, I find this more pointless than the individual friend codes for games.
Adolph @ May 26th 2009 10:20PM
They are repaying your loyalty with gifts. Free shipping.
That's the point.

*crosses fingers that the SNES Classic Controller is the Platinum reward*
S. Tiger @ May 26th 2009 9:35PM
I sure hope so. This would save me $20.
GewurztraminerX @ May 26th 2009 11:22PM
no, no, not just any old $20 classic controller... the SNES japan-only classic controller which currently goes for about $70 on eBay.
S. Tiger @ May 27th 2009 5:45AM
I meant it would save me $20 from having to go buy a Classic Controller. I got Super Mario World off the VC...but it's impossible to play with a GameCube controller unless you have a third hand or a trained spider to push the Y button while you stick with pushing B to jump.
Phil @ May 26th 2009 10:19PM
I got platinum this year and I doubt it will happen ever again. Gold maybe, but not Platinum.
I really hope its something cool and useful like the SNES Classic Controller.
Knowing my luck it'll be something pseudo-lame like a desk calender.

Damn that Mr. Resetti!

"Coins (points obtained by registering games/hardware, taking surveys and buying WiiWare and DSiWare titles) are only valid toward a user's Club Nintendo status WITHIN THE YEAR THEY ARE PURCHSED."
Are you guys absolutely sure on this point? Because when you register a game, you don't have to do the survey, infact the survey expires a few years after the date of registration.
Since you don't get coins until a survey is completed, I would assume that points are only valid during the year in which the survey is completed, as opposed to "WITHIN THE YEAR THEY ARE PURCHASED", meaning that you could buy a game today, register it, but wait until the next year year to complete the survey for points.
This would be handy if you already had platinum status for the current year (as I do), but still wanted to register your games right away (to avoid losing the registration number, or to avoid someone else using it if you sell the game used). I have platinum status this year, and I also have quite a few surveys I'm waiting to do until after June 30th so that they (hopefully) count towards building my points total for next year.
Any clarification would be great, although I am pretty sure that I'm correct, as you stated at the end: "hold off on any activity that may net you coins ... for the sake of your Club Nintendo street cred".

I have a question that hopefully someone can answer. So, I've reached platinum status, and I was wondering if I can redeem the coins I've earned so far before June 30th, but keep my status. Or if I redeem the coins, does that compromise my status, and put me below Platinum. I'm at exactly 600, and I want my free gift. Does that mean I need to keep the coins or am I able to spend them and still get freebies?
SiK99 @ May 27th 2009 1:38AM
You can 'spend' your coins on a prize and still retain your gold/platinum status for that prize year.
flameofdoom666 @ May 27th 2009 7:52AM
Spend your coins!
You will still be platinum. It only counts what you EARNED, and you are allowed to spend coins. I had 830, and now I have 30. Still platinum.
Garu @ May 27th 2009 9:29AM
So I'm 50 points away from "platinum status"...
Should I go for it and try to get 50 more points before June 30th?
How many points do you get for WiiWare games? I know Alien Crush Returns gives points and I have been thinking of getting that.
The only other game I may get before June 30th is the Indiana Jones game, and that won't give any points. Wii Sports Resort will, but that will be too late.
Anyone have 50 points they don't need?? =)
guttertalk @ May 27th 2009 10:58AM
I'm just 20 points shy of Platinum. I'm searching the house for unregistered games. :) My daughter got Pokemon Ranger, if I can just find the manual with the registration code.
Author X @ May 27th 2009 4:38PM
I'm in the same boat, with 550 points. I was thinking of getting Pikmin New Style Play for $30, which /should/ get 50 points for being a Wii game (of course, Wii Fit was more points, so New Play Style games might be less points).
Anyway, according to Nintendo's site, eligible games from the Wii Shop Channel are worth 10 points, but the survey won't show up for 4-6 weeks, so you can't get the 10 points until then.
RyGy @ May 27th 2009 11:06AM
I've been platinum for a while, hope this is a good prize
Solo @ May 27th 2009 3:27PM
I hope the prize is good but I don't think it will be. There are way too many of us with Platinum status this year for them to offer a really cool reward.
Darkmoon @ Jun 15th 2009 2:26AM
What will be the Platinum prize?
