Nintendo celebrates one year of WiiWare
For all the complaining Nintendo fans do about WiiWare, and Nintendo system releases in general, all the games presented in this video make for a pretty strong year of releases. In the press release about the anniversary, Nintendo gave us reasons to be excited about the next year of WiiWare, including Cave Story, Icarian: Kindred Spirits, Super Meat Boy, Cave Story, Bit.Trip: CORE, Cave Story, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years and CAVE STORY.

Fuck yeah, CAVE STORY!!
T-Patch @ May 12th 2009 6:32PM
Did somebody say Cave Story? :D
I came buckets
Markez @ May 12th 2009 2:57PM
Hmmmmmmm....... My big pile o' 3000 points remains, and my indecision continues... Tetris looks pretty rad, but I've been starting to lean towards High Voltage Hot Rod Racing as my next purchase...
Sisyphus @ May 12th 2009 3:15PM
If you're looking for suggestions, which games do you already have and do you like puzzlers? There's a lot of fun to be had.
Adolph @ May 12th 2009 5:58PM
Why the fuck haven't you gotten Tetris Party ? It's excellent.
The other game is like 5 levels and you will regret buying. Tetris Party is a great local, online and single player game. Lots of great new modes, great music, and tons of fun twists on the Tetris formula. I don't regret downloading that for a second.
T-Patch @ May 12th 2009 6:14PM
Tetris Party is well worth getting, and it actually gave back twice as many Wii points that I paid for it. (Managed to make it in the top 500 for tournament 1 & 3)
too bad the tournaments are over, they were fun. ^_^

The only worthwhile game on Wiiware is Star Soldier R, and maybe Space Invaders Get Even. But even the latter is pushing it. Wiiware is a wasteland. Save your points for some Virtual Console games instead.
Dreganfyre @ May 13th 2009 8:46AM
Haven't tried Star Soldier R...
I have Bomberman Blast, World of Goo, Tetris Party, Strong Bad Ep 1 and Mega Man 9, and I love them all. There are quite a few others I would like to download if I had more time and money :P
StarStabbedMoon @ May 12th 2009 2:58PM
Forget Cave Story, Night Game is going to be amazing. I hope Nicalis has been multi-tasking well.
Markez @ May 12th 2009 3:19PM
I've got Lost Winds, Final Fantasy & Strong Bad ep. 1. I'm going to get World of Goo sooner or later... I'm a fan of puzzlers, play Dr. Mario over at my buddies occasionally.
Markez @ May 12th 2009 3:20PM
oh consarnit
Foetoid @ May 12th 2009 8:54PM
FFCC: My life as a King is very good, especially with all the DLC dungeon packs.
religiousjedi @ May 12th 2009 3:25PM
Confession time: I only have two Wii Ware games: Lost Winds (which I never really got into) and My Pokemon Ranch (I needed the storage for my Pokemans! Honest!!!!)
;-;
Jenni @ May 12th 2009 3:44PM
If Nintendo really wanted to celebrate, why didn't they have a one day sale on some of the top titles?
square @ May 12th 2009 4:05PM
Agreed. I thought we were getting a free download. The disappointment.
Markez @ May 12th 2009 4:10PM
Why would you think you would be getting a free title???
square @ May 12th 2009 4:26PM
I take sweets to the office on my birthday...
It was really just a momentary slip from reality. Lucid judgment overruled by optimism.
TracerBullet @ May 12th 2009 4:04PM
Have World of Goo, Lit, Hot Rod Racing and... ok, I'll admit - Bonsai Barber. All great titles, sure worth the investment. Looking foward Night Game
Markez @ May 12th 2009 4:11PM
Think I'll definitely pick up Hot Rod Racing, was even considering Bonsai Barber for the lulz...
But I thought Lit got kinda poor, so-so reviews?
TX2 @ May 12th 2009 6:31PM
Lit was short, but it was a real classic challenge.
Nook @ May 12th 2009 4:12PM
I've got Lost Winds, meh ....what was all the hub-bub aboot? Didn't catch my interest.
My Life as a King - fun, if not a bit...laid back. Still fun.
Strongbad Ep1, good - but never finished it. Teen Girl Squad should have been a stand alone.
World of Goo - for the wife.
I think that's it. Waiting for FF4AY. I am confused though - is Cave Story coming or not?
Markez @ May 12th 2009 4:58PM
Yeah I screwed around with Teen Girl Squad for a bit and haven't touched it since. Hopped onto Wiitoob not long after and watched alllll the Teen Girl Squad bits.
What's the draw with Cave Story?
It's an old rpg, with new sprites? Is that really it?
Dreganfyre @ May 13th 2009 8:52AM
Well, kind of... But it's not an RPG :) It's a metroid-vania. I played the PC version and it is actually really good. Very compelling storyline, very addictive gameplay.
I guess it's mostly so impressive because it was such an awesome game made by just one guy who released it for free. Now that he's releasing a paid version with extra content, people are happy to show their support.
CJLopez @ May 12th 2009 4:29PM
MLAAK
Onslaught
Bomberman blast
Lost Wind
Lit
World of Goo
Wild West Guns
Gyrostar
Evasive Space
HV Hot Rod
megapenguinx @ May 12th 2009 9:42PM
I played Gyrostar, but just couldn't get into it very much
Cesaria @ May 12th 2009 4:29PM
Hell yeah. I agree. It wouldn't hurt to knock off a few bucks on some of these games. I don't see how it would hurt anything. I imagine you'd see a huge influx in sales and potential word of mouth on games after the sale. Then again, I'm not in charge of marketing at Nintendo. I should be, though. I should be.
Cesaria @ May 12th 2009 4:30PM
Uh, that was a reply to Jenni. So, pretend like I didn't fuck up.
Sisyphus @ May 12th 2009 4:38PM
Just buy your point cards when they're on sale and any game you buy is therefore on sale. The Wii points cards usually ring up as Video game accessories, so just watch for coupons and sales.
Sisyphus @ May 12th 2009 4:45PM
I have:
Art Style: Cubello (Fun and really addicting)
Art Style: Orbiting-game (Interesting for a while, neat concept, relaxing)
Lit (ok puzzler, but didn't get into it)
Tetris (fun, but win or lose it's still Tetris)
World of Goo (best game I've played in a while)
Defend Your Castle (I was eager to try a Wiiware game, alright?)
Lost Winds (Pretty and nice concept that didn't quite come together)
Alien Crush Returns (Just got but haven't started)
Family Table Tennis (a cheap distraction for a while)
Space Invaders Get Even (ok shooter)
Tiki Towers (knockoff of World of Goo, but it's a lot of fun. MONKEYS!!!)
Toki Tori (slow puzzler that never did it for me)
There's still a few more I want, but I need to spend more time playing some of my retail games.
Fernando Rocker @ May 12th 2009 4:46PM
There are a lot of great WiiWare titles... the problem is that most of you guys only focus on the bad games, but like to forget all the good games...
So far, I have LostWinds, My Life as a King, Toki Tori, Gyrostarr, Strong Bad series, Bit.Trip.Beat, World of Goo, Final Fantasy Crystal Defenders, Equilibrio, Gradius ReBirth, LIT, Space Invaders: Get Even, Alien Crush Returns, Tetris Party, Art Style: Cubello, Art Style: Orbient, Art Style: Rotohex, Bomberman Blast, Wild West Gun, Dr. Mario, Defend your Castle and Mega Man 9...
As you can see, I'm a big fan of WiiWare (and Live Arcade too), and as you can see, I don't have a single bad WiiWare game. Please guys, stop with the hate. It's time to start looking the good games, and not to focus on the bad games.
And there are still tons of announced games that are still coming: Puzzle Bobble, Bubble Bobble, Cave Story, Super Meat Boy (even the main character of Braid makes a cameo in the game), Icarian: Kindred Spirits, Night Game, Contra ReBirth, Salamander ReBirth, Sword and Soldiers, Bit.Trip.Core, Adventures Island, My Life as a Darklord...
Even 2D Boy (World of Goo) is working on another WiiWare game...

bongoes @ May 12th 2009 4:48PM
Don't forget about Eduardo the Samurai Toaster!
Cesaria @ May 12th 2009 4:52PM
The hate on WiiWare comes with the blind hate on Nintendo and the hive mind mentality that all Wii has to offer is shovelware. While those people bitch and moan, I'm playing awesome games. World of Goo is better than anything the competition has to offer for downloadable games.
John Z @ May 13th 2009 4:48AM
F, you know I'm generally level-headed about these sorts of things, but can you honestly say that Space Invaders Get Even wasn't a disgusting rip-off? For heaven's sake, I only played exactly twenty minutes before they asked me to buy more DLC for it! It was a foul, blighted cash-grab that SE shouldn't have released (though for those twenty minutes, it showed some promise...). I've gotten burned on WiiWare twice (SIGE and, later on, Snowboard Riot-- sue me, I was hoping it would be good) and I'm extremely wary of many titles, so granted I haven't played a lot of what's on your list.
That said, I think you've hit most of the good titles, and you're right: the presence of bad games on a system in no way diminishes the value of the good ones. If that WERE the case, Super Mario Bros. (the first one) would be utter garbage because it was on the same platform as Deadly Towers and Karnov.
bongoes @ May 12th 2009 4:47PM
I've only got Megaman 9 and Strong Bad Episode 4 (just because I wanted to see the next Dangeresque) but I will definitely get Eduardo the Samurai Toaster and CAVE STORY!!
camera_stooge @ May 12th 2009 5:12PM
I just bought (less than a week ago, actually) my first WiiWare game: World of Goo. I'm also thinking of picking up LIT.
Blue_Falcon @ May 12th 2009 5:56PM
I was thinking this week we'd be celebrating the one year anniversary of WiiWare with Cave Story. Since it's Cave Story, and it's the perfect excuse to celebrate anything. And everything. Obviously Nintendo thought Family Pirates was somehow more in line with their printing money modus operandi.
Also, Night Game, Super Meat Boy, Eduardo, LostWinds 2, and Swords & Soldiers will be getting my dollars once they come out.
As for what I've bought. LostWinds and Space Invaders Get Even. LostWinds is fantastic, despite being a little shorter than I'd like. SIGE was not fun. It's not the DLC thing that bugged me, but I found the gameplay to be kind of awful. I've only played it once since I bought it, so maybe I just haven't given it a fair shake.
I have other previous WiiWare games I'd like to give a shot at, but haven't yet because frankly it's all been way too mixed to just jump in without any kind of demo. We'll see, however Cave Story is top priority before I waste my time with other not-Cave Story WiiWare games.
Josh @ May 12th 2009 8:28PM
I think there's a typo in the post. I read "Cave Story" four times, haha.
Dv8thwonder @ May 13th 2009 2:50AM
To make this more special they should let consumers take their VC and Wiiware titles on the go using their DSi's.
Markez @ May 13th 2009 11:34AM
Hey anyone have Onslaught? How is that?
