VC in Brief: Galaxy Force II (Sega Genesis)
We say: Unique shmup that genre fans will enjoy
Yes, we know, it's tough to be excited about Virtual Console offerings when every other week's goodies are shmups. Galaxy Force II, however, is a pretty unique one and well worth your time (and, perhaps, your money). See what we're talking about in the video above, and be sure to catch up with past installments through our VC in Brief tag.

What happened to the Oregon Trail DSiware post? It showed up on my toolbar but the story has disappeared. Did someone jump the gun on posting it?

That wasn't supposed to be revealed until June 2nd, apparently.

What happened to VC's arcade section? This would be better that way.

Agreed. These offerings would be much more compelling if they were the arcade originals.
Console versions were okay back in the day because that's the best our hardware could muster. But these days, there's no reason we can't have perfectly emulated arcade originals of these games playing on our consoles. I'd definitely be willing to pay a buck or three more for the arcade version of a game instead of the significantly watered down console version.
I don't need an updated version a la SSF2THDR (yes, those are nice, too), but at the very least the arcade original would be nice! One game in particular I would like to see is the arcade version of Contra. I played that game to death at a local liquor store before I eventually got the vastly inferior (although still enormously fun) NES version.

This reminds me of Star Fox.

Well with Contra, they changed the game significantly. Something like Super C I hate in Arcade, but enjoy on NES.
But this game, from my knowledge, is just a watered-down port of an Arcade game. I suppose it might be SEGA's fault, but then one can argue that Nintendo should have better standards (look what they are letting happen to SF2 releases).
I also remember them saying Space Harrier was to be on it when they announced it... I do not recall it being there.

I actually had this game back in the day and played the hell out of it! I'm gonna have to pick this up.
