Final Fantasy IV: The After Years to feature four-player multiplayer
The official Final Fantasy IV: The After Years site is live. Siliconera spotted something quite interesting in the game's features page -- support for four player multiplayer? Interesting. Seems as though you won't have to play Square Enix's upcoming WiiWare RPG alone.
We contacted Square Enix for more information, and Klee Kluo clarified: "The game has multiplayer function during battles only, similar to the original FINAL FANTASY IV. Up to four players can participate in battles by connecting the appropriate number of Wii Remotes or Classic Controllers and assign them to the characters." It seems like a neat addition for The After Years, but we're not entirely sure if our friends would want to take such a passive role and engage only in battles. Perhaps it's still best to play The After Years the way it was meant to be played:on a cell phone as a single-player experience.

Hey, don't knock it. It works well enough for the Tales games. Besides, this has been a feature in Final Fantasy before; FF6 allowed more than one player during battles.

Yeah, it was a handy feature in FF6. Being my first RPG, I was able to learn how to play the genre with somebody that knew what they were doing.

IN MY OPINION, FFIV is the best FF ever and i am pumped about the sequel. I bought every version of FFIV released (SNES,GBA, PS1, DS). I know, I know, im the reason SE keeps re-releasing older games with makeovers... but mark my words, you will thank me when it finally happens to FF VII.

This isn't new to JRPG's but it is a rather niche market... 'people who want to only play the battles while their friends play the rest of the game'
This would have worked better on Dreamcast as you had a VMU. It's actually pretty fun yelling at your friends to cure you or your going to punch them.

It worked in Eternal Sonata as well...

That's just friggin awesome. I can participate in the battles, and leave the getting lost to my brother! I wish more games had split-screen; my brother and I are pissed at the small number of games that have it. Most stick with only online.

this looks to be a fun rpg to download, and errr....ummm....classic controller control to boot? sign me up, the multiplayer also seems to be a good way to introduce my wifey to rpg's.

Guess I gotta get started on FFIV. Wouldn't wanna play the sequel without beating the original first lol.
