VC/WiiWare Tuesday: Phantasy World of Goo
Today would be an incredible day on the Japanese Wii Shop even if World of Goo weren't debuting. In addition to one of the best games on Wii, the Virtual Console is updated with four high-quality titles. In fact, Phantasy Star alone would ensure that today was a winner. It's hard to imagine a better deal than Phantasy Star for just 600 Wii Points. Other VC games available in Japan today include Castlevania 3 (awesome), the PC Engine version of the NES Ninja Gaiden (quite the curiosity!) and an arcade rail shooter from Namco Bandai. The other WiiWare game, and basically the only unknown property, is Hajitte! Block Rush, which looks like a radial Breakout in which the paddle is in the middle of the screen. We'd try that!
Virtual Console:
- Akumajou Densetsu (Castlevania 3) (Famicom, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)
- Phantasy Star (Master System, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)
- Ninja Ryukenden (Ninja Gaiden) (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)
- Starblade (Arcade, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
- Hajitte! Block Rush (1 player, 500 Wii Points)
- World of Goo (1-4 players, 1,500 Wii Points)

See, this is what I'm talking about. We got one title for both Wiiware and VC. Japan gets FOUR titles for VC, and TWO titles for WiiWare.
What the HELL, NoA.
ecco6t9 @ Apr 21st 2009 1:40PM
NOA has no control over anything they release. It just occurred to me that if NOA is window dressing why even have one? Surely it must be cheaper for Nintendo to just have a Japanese office.

I never said NoA had any control over NoJ. They do, however, have control over the fact they're only releasing one title a week.

I have Phantasy Star in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection but I haven't bothered to play it because RPGs don't age well. :P

Don't age well?! Have you been sniffing the cleaning solution in your NES cartridge cleaning kit? The RPG is one of the few, if not only, genre that can withstand the test of time. I still play Final Fantasy from start to finish at least once a year, and it is as fun as the first time.

Oh yeah, 'cause dated battle and leveling systems combined with broken balancing and the evils of random encounters are just fantastic.

The American Virtual Console is lucky to get this many solid titles over a three month timespan. Awesome.

PS1 is awesome but yet again this is Japan and NA waits.

Did World of Goo become multiplayer when I wasn't looking?
Nick Frost @ Apr 27th 2009 2:44PM
Wow, I feel foolish. Further research proved that all this time I very well could have been playing this with my friends. I had this game for many months and really had no idea.
Pardon me as I go to write bad poetry about how sinister the world is.
