Touch Ruminations: DSi Shop (and how it could be more important than WiiWare)

Have you had ample time to recover from Iwata's keynote? I have, and thinking about the DSi (I can't help it, I wants it), I believe that the DSi Shop is easily the most exciting and important feature of the new handheld. And I think it's a service that could be more important than WiiWare.
Several factors brought me about to this conclusion, the most notable of which is scale/affordability. Creating products for the DSi Shop can't be that much of a lengthy and expensive process compared to developing on other platforms, which allows for less resource devotion, directly benefiting us, the end user, with more affordable experiences. Also, titles on a smaller scale means that development time is also cut down, meaning we can get smaller, bite-sized content more regularly than what's available at retail.
Then there's Nintendo's reliance on the platform from a revenue generation standpoint. It's no secret that the DS Lite has been selling like hotcakes ever since it burst on the scene (the DS Phat did the same thing), but how is Nintendo going to maintain steady profit with the DSi? A lot of folks with DS Lites don't really see the need to upgrade, because there hasn't really been much in the way of DSi-exclusive content yet. So right now, Nintendo is hoping the features of the handheld will sell the system, but down the road, they're going to have to rely on DSiWare more and more if they want to maintain profits, interest, and value in a handheld that is pretty close to the same thing as its predecessor, yet $50 more. But I digress.
Another key item is third-party support. The DS has been supported with an overabundance of quality, AAA titles from third-party developers and publishers, but what about DSiWare? When WiiWare burst on the scene, it was an untested delivery system on a console that had no storage solution (of course, things are different now). The DSi has SD card support right from the get-go, so users won't need to worry about storage space and will feel free to download everything they want. Aside from that, just the general enthusiasm surrounding Nintendo handhelds and the large install base of current DS owners should help entice some third parties. WiiWare provided us with amazing, unique content in Art Style, World of Goo, and Bit.Trip: Beat, and I think the DSi is going to do that much more. As it stands now, it looks like it'll be a slow start for the service, much like WiiWare, but down the road things should pick up drastically.
What about the free content? Nintendo revealed the pricing structure for DSiWare and, unlike WiiWare, if offers up free original games and apps. This is something that's been proven to be a big draw with another handheld: the iPhone. If you can get a user into your store, and have them try some free products, they're going to be less timid about using said store and could be more inclined to actually pay for something in the future. Plus, it's just free stuff. Everybody loves free stuff.
The Wii has been selling crazy, sure, but a lot of Wii owners don't take their consoles online. The same could happen with the DSi, and only time will tell with that, but I think it's an exciting platform and one that has a lot more potential than WiiWare. Smaller, cheaper downloads that take less time and release more often? What's not to love about that!

This is why I personally think that it would be smart of nintendo to release a virtual handheld. It would be just the kind of item to get a lot of people to buy a DSi. Let's face it, nintendo fans tend to enjoy retro gaming, and nintendo should (and hopefully will) cash in on that.
That and I want to be able to play old gameboy pokemon games again now that the batteries have died in my old carts D:
Here' to hoping those rumors turn out to be true.
manyquestions @ Mar 27th 2009 8:27PM
What would truly be amazing is if they offered the opportunity, via DS card, to -transfer- VC and Virtual Handheld (I guess teh acronym "VH", probably hasn't fallen into regular use yet, give it an hour), games between a Wii and DSi. I don't know if htat's technically feasable, but that would bring deffinitely me down off the fence and into "OMG I NEEDZ A DSI!1!!!1!" territory instantly.
Thetaray @ Mar 27th 2009 5:59PM
if this is the column you wrote for last week, "Punch Out!!" wasn't worthy to replace it.
David Hinkle @ Mar 27th 2009 6:55PM
Do you mean last week's column sucked? I can't really understand you.
manyquestions @ Mar 27th 2009 8:30PM
I think he just means that this article is a lot better than that one, and more interesting. At least, that's what I was thinking as I read this. I don't really care too much for Punch Out.
David Hinkle @ Mar 27th 2009 8:57PM
Oh, okay. I just couldn't wrap my head around it. Thanks!
Thetaray @ Mar 27th 2009 6:00PM
oh yeah, there IS a virtual handheld confirmed.
Zerokku @ Mar 27th 2009 6:13PM
Not completely. We haven't heard anything from nintendo themselves, and I'm not going to get my hopes up until it's officially announced by them.
Roto13 @ Mar 27th 2009 8:33PM
Some people say they heard about it at that DSi event, but Nintendo isn't commenting on it when asked. Doesn't sound very confirmed to me.
Especially since with all of the WiiWare/Virtual Console stuff at GDC the other day, that would have been the perfect time to announce/confirm a Virtual Handheld.
oldmike @ Mar 27th 2009 6:08PM
umm as some one that dose not have a DS yet but what one mite be best for me
so far the stuff that i want to get are My Japanese Coach (this is what got me to think about getting one) the new Pokémon (last one i played was yellow)
is it worth the $50 more for the DSi???
TheJerk @ Mar 27th 2009 8:15PM
i say you learn how to spell in english before you move on and tackle japanese...
KaBob799 @ Mar 27th 2009 6:25PM
DSiWare is the main reason I want a DSi, that and my Phat is started to get old.
Dries @ Mar 27th 2009 8:11PM
Hey! You stole my line!
esposch @ Mar 27th 2009 9:06PM
I don't think DSiWare will be a huge success because the DSi will be superseded before it gets to be the next big thing.
KaBob799 @ Mar 27th 2009 9:49PM
Unless the successor also supports DSiWare.
esposch @ Mar 28th 2009 12:04AM
Good point. I hope the next handheld is backwards compatible with DS, because all they would have to do to stop people running Flash Carts through the DS slot is make "Slot 3" faster.
SoshiKitai @ Mar 27th 2009 10:06PM
Everyone can keep claiming that the DSi isn't worth its camera or SD slot, but they keep refusing the idea of DSi specific games...
And then comes the back and forth of "It's not region-free!"-"Yes it is!"-"What? You mean it's not?!"-"I just said it is region-free! Read it for f***'s sake!"-"Oh, you mean it's not region-free..."-"AHHHHH!!!!!"...
... I just want my DSi games. :/
Bowser Rogozhin @ Mar 28th 2009 7:17AM
If Nintendo go the virtual handheld route I'll probably give up gaming. By that I mean less Civilisation Revolution DS more Pac-Man on my poor, poor phone. The idea of spending substantial amounts of money on something virtual is something I cannot get my head around.
And judging on what I've seen on Wiiware, I wouldn't get too excited for the DSIware service. Wiiware is a wasteland of fail, and it's rather 'puzzling' why people would automatically think the handheld version could be superior. In fact, due to the lower costs, man power, and expectations, it'll probably turn out a lot worse than any of us could have imagined.
Santos L. Halper @ Mar 28th 2009 11:08AM
Can you elaborate on how "WiiWare is a wasteland of fail"? (I hate what the internet has done to the word "fail" by the way)
Bowser Rogozhin @ Mar 28th 2009 11:36AM
There have been 60-70+ Wiiware games released, but only one decent title: Star Soldier R. Space Invaders Get Even if we're really pushing it. The ratio of quality software to mediocrity is simply unacceptable.
Bryan @ Mar 28th 2009 1:12PM
Mega Man 9 says "hi".
SoshiKitai @ Mar 28th 2009 1:20PM
So does Lost Winds. And other games you don't tend to like but everyone else does.
And it doesn't matter about the ratio. If it really mattered about ratio, people would've dropped the PS2. And now, people would've dropped the Wii.
Goodness knows people did, and we're glad they did, because finally they stopped bitching.
Bowser Rogozhin @ Mar 28th 2009 1:31PM
Two decent games do not make a worthwhile service, Soshi. Maybe I used the wrong word in 'ratio', but two games compared to the library, both games based on decades old franchises, which frankly flies in the face of all those who chant the dum-drum of 'new games, new ips? I had to deny some drunk access to the club yesterday, and his argument was so compelling that I'll regurgitate for you guys here: come on, man, come on.
Lost Winds was garbage, and the Mega Man demo over in Live-Land 'Smelt Like Bad Nostalgia.'
Roto13 @ Mar 28th 2009 1:45PM
"The idea of spending substantial amounts of money on something virtual is something I cannot get my head around. "
Then you'd better stop buying video games, movies, and music. And not just digitally.
Bowser Rogozhin @ Mar 28th 2009 2:02PM
"And not just digitally."
+1
Got me. You know what I mean.
Mr Khan @ Mar 28th 2009 3:46PM
Opinions are fun, huh Bowser? I really think WiiWare's caught on in a surprising way. Still not a year old yet, but quite a bit of worthwhile stuff, and more in the pipeline. Stuff to appease many tastes
SoshiKitai @ Mar 29th 2009 3:35AM
The problem is, those are your opinions... they aren't so much facts as they are opinions.
I, for one, love my WiiWare. I'm a fan of the 4 SBCG4AP games, I do like Lost Winds, World of Goo's a classic to many, I'm one of the few that put up with and liked FFCC:MLaaK, I'd rather turn on Family Table Tennis instead of putting in Wii Sports for Tennis, Dr. Mario Online RX never gets tiring for me, the ArtStyle games are lovely, Trip Beat's fun for some of us, Megaman 9 is a fave for some of us, and... well... actually, that's all I could afford right now.
... needless to say, I would buy more if I had the money for it - and it's obvious my tastes are a bit more open than others.
In that sense, WiiWare is doing great in serving its customers well: Because people ARE buying their stuff, whether considered good or bad.
SoshiKitai @ Mar 29th 2009 3:37AM
Darnit, I meant 5 SBCG4AP.
Darn 4 in the title...
Bowser Rogozhin @ Mar 29th 2009 5:56AM
"people ARE buying their stuff"
I wouldn't be too sure about that. There's a reason why Telltale Games, for example, have exited the Wiiware arena in favour for the Xbox Live Marketplace. If you're not on the most popular games list, or you do not have considerable online hype for your Wiiware game, then sales are "supposedly" at a level beyond poor. I know that's definitely the case for the Virtual Console, and I don't see why the same rule wouldn't apply to Wiiware.
Damian @ Mar 28th 2009 3:20PM
Bring me Pokemon gold/silver with transfer functionality with diamond.pearl and im happy, then super mario bros 1,2,3.
Some golden sun would be nice since i lost my original cartridge.
Damian @ Mar 28th 2009 3:21PM
Links Awakening would be great, best zelda game for me so far.
