I can't wait for this. One of my top plays back on the SNES.

didnt get to play this back in the day. what were the differences between this and nes version?
oboewan @ Mar 26th 2009 8:22PM
...Hopefully this one will have lag calibration.
The original was unplayable on HDTVs...
jONEz @ Mar 27th 2009 9:18AM
Lag calibration...? I'm not really sure how they'd do that, assuming this isn't a standard delay and if every model is different. A better question is why TV's do this in the first place.
oboewan @ Mar 27th 2009 3:30PM
Well, it's basically because HDTVs are slow because there's so much stuff going on.
Punch-Out is, essentially, when you look at it, a timing game - you do stuff in time with stuff that happens on screen. Anyone who has ever tried to play Guitar Hero or Rock Band on an HDTV knows that the first thing one does is go calibrate the lag...
jONEz @ Mar 29th 2009 2:20PM
Do you mean Gaming mode on your TV? I always assumed the delay your talking about was your TV pre-processing the signal before it's displayed. Unless I'm wrong, but that sounds like a TV setting not a game issue.
oboewan @ Mar 29th 2009 5:29PM
Well, yes. Each HDTV is different.
The reason it's a game issue is because, on HDTVs, you're getting an average lag of 6 frames (or 1/10 of a second) - even with game mode on, you're still getting a lag of around a frame or so. On DLP HDTVs, this is an even bigger problem - you're getting a lag of up to a whopping 15 frames, or one-fourth of a second.
This is NOT, however, present on standard-definition CRT TVs - which, at the time this game was released, were the norm. As such, the timing window on an HDTV is up to 1/4 of a second smaller than it is intended to be, and the game needs to be able to account for that... eventually the game becomes LITERALLY unplayable. You need to push the button BEFORE you see the tell.
jONEz @ Mar 30th 2009 12:00PM
I highly doubt they're going to patch the game to allow you to inject your own timing through the emulator into the game. This would be the only way to fix it, since as you said it's variable and not a static value.
So yes, it's your TV's fault, not the games. While Guitar Hero or Rockband may include a feature to compensate for your equipment, this is an $8 game were talking about not a multi-million dollar franchise.
I can see why this is a problem for some setups but don't believe it's something Nintendo should be concerned with. Expecting a 20 year old game to adjust itself to your new HDTV is a little much if you ask me.
