Fan brings 'Link's Awakening' into the world of 3D
With the power of 3DsMax8 in hand, a Nintendo fan going by the name of MithosKuu has decided to completely render the classic GameBoy title, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening in 3D. After revealing the first pieces of Koholint Island in September 2008, the 3D transformation is complete.
Using the freshly made 3D hunting ground, beta testing for the proof of concept zChicken Hunter Extreme (MegaUpload) has begun. MithosKuu is asking all users to play with the beta and report back to help fix issues with the environment ... unless you're a lawyer for Nintendo in which case there's nothing to see here and this has nothing to do with the Link's Awakening you're thinking of.

Don't get me wrong I think its very impressive work.
However changing things from 2d to 3d or vice versa things are lost in the translation.
It wouldn't be the same to play the game in 3d like that. Just think of Tetris on Virtual Boy is basically the same as regular Tetris but 3d aspect doesn't improve on anything at all. Some things are meant to be 2d, just like tetris don't mess with a great thing you will screw it up.

"It wouldn't be the same to play the game in 3d like that."
It probably would. The original game is played from a 3/4 isometric view. It's pseudo-3D anyway. The only difference in this is that now you can walk behind buildings and crap. It's like if they remade Pokemon R/S/E in Pokemon D/P/P style 3D. There'd be almost no difference.

It uses the original sprites as textures. I don't know how I feel about that.

that looks cool

Ah... I love this game. It's so surreal for a Legend of Zelda game. Although 3D Link's Awakening seem to add about as much as Pokemon in 3D did.

I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't put a stop to this. I'm pretty sure they've shot down similar projects before. Anyway, looks sweet; can't wait to give it a try. It would rock even more if it was for the DS, though.

Too bad it doesn't work for me.

Does this work on Macs?
Yutsud.oberin @ Mar 19th 2009 1:01AM
Seriously!!!
If it wont im gonna be very upset myself.

The game seems to be programmed in Java, and that language is know for being very compatible. So it should work just fine on Macs! =D
Zenith @ Mar 19th 2009 1:15PM
It doesn't want to work on mine...

As of now, there's no reason at all for the project to be shot down. This is no remake of Link's Awakening -- at least not at the moment --, the guy's just drawing the map in 3D. It'd be like stopping people from doing fanart.
Josh @ Mar 19th 2009 6:14PM
Which I think is legal, unfortunately (stopping fanart, I mean).

Stuff like this is why I wish Nintendo would do community outreach stuff. Nintendo by far have the most creative fans who constantly doing stuff like this and fan-made games. It'd be great if they saw this, gave the guy some money and help and put this on WiiWare as a Link's Awakening remake or something.

Wow! I loved Link's Awakening and this complete 3D map just looks fantastic. If Nintendo did a remake like that I'd probably buy it.

Also: Are these mist effects in the forest? Awesome!

Sorry, didn't mean to doublepost. My mistake!

I guess this is what an illegal copy of 3DSMax and a crap load of free time will net you.
