Metroid Prime's new play controls demonstrated in Japanese ads
Nintendo's new Japanese commercials for the New Play Control version of Metroid Prime pretty well answer the question of how the new controls work. The commercials show example motions over in-game activities, revealing that the control scheme for the Wii remake of Retro Studios' first-person adventure game are similar to the controls found in Metroid Prime 3. The clip goes by too quickly and doesn't feature enough detail for us to determine if any changes have been made to the Corruption control scheme, but we doubt it.This is basically what we expected, and we're delighted to see it: aside from a minor issue with the + and - buttons, the Wiimote/Nunchuk controls for Metroid Prime 3 were just right. We're quite excited about getting to use them in the magnificent first Prime.

I'm really tempted to rebuy this game now. Though I'm curious about how the various beams will work, whether you'll switch between them like the visors shown, probably pressing + to see them, or if they'll stack the beams. The latter is less likely, given it would fundamentally change many aspects of the game, notably the final boss which requires shooting the right beam at the proper time.

It looks like it has been redone quite well, makes me want to play it again actually!
LokeSTL @ Feb 5th 2009 10:25AM
Looks great, now they need to give us a US release date already!!!
nintendolink007-videogames @ Feb 5th 2009 11:06AM
I wonder if the first metroid will still have the optional Metroid Fusion suit along with NES Metroid unlockable.
WalkingCarpet @ Feb 5th 2009 11:28AM
This looks really awesome, actually. I'll be waiting to pick it up, though, until both it and MP2 are out here in the States. I want to see if they actually come out with the box set that everyone is screaming for.
Thanatos @ Feb 5th 2009 11:35AM
Did they update it to widescreen as well? And any idea when the states will be getting this? I already own all the Metroids but if it controls exactly like Prime3 it is a must buy.
Batmyke @ Feb 5th 2009 6:03PM
Yeah, this one is in 16:9 widescreen, as well as progressive scan (which it also had on the Gamecube).
Batmyke @ Feb 5th 2009 11:47AM
Only one thing bothered me about MP3 - stacking weapons. In Prime 1 & 2, you were required to switch guns during battles and other situations, which was a key element of the gameplay. But without a c-stick to use for gun switching, MP3 resorted to 'stacking' the weapon upgrades, so your power beam would automatically also become a wave beam as well, etc.
If weapon stacking is applied to Prime 1 & 2, I fear some of the gameplay will be altered for the worse, but it's hard to say without trying them out.
I guess I'll have to wait and see...
bukizzle715 @ Feb 5th 2009 11:49AM
It doesn't seem likely there will be beam stacking. In Corruption you switched visors with -, and activated hypermode with +. Since there's no hypermode in MP 1 & 2, they'll probably use + to switch beams.
Batmyke @ Feb 5th 2009 6:00PM
Wow I hope you're right! I'd much rather have beam switching... And to answer someone else's question up above, the game is definitely running in 16:9 (widescreen) and progressive scan (which MP1 & 2 did on the 'Cube as well).
Shadow El @ Feb 5th 2009 9:05PM
Stacking was fine for me, I just wish you had the option to turn them on/off like in Super Metroid, it bothered me that neither Fusion nor Prime Corruption gave you that option. D:

THERES A METROID PRIME 3 WII REMAKE!!!???????!11111 *jizzz*
Drahken @ Feb 5th 2009 1:03PM
So are they friggin bringing here or not? I mean, sure, Pikmin. Great. But this is the fer-real deal.
tkAshur @ Feb 5th 2009 2:19PM
Seriously, it will be the widescreen upgrade that will be the seller for me...
I seriously had a mission to beat all these games shortly before the wii came out...man...I shoulda waited! Oh well, just can't see these things comin.
il_duce620 @ Feb 5th 2009 3:10PM
I'd (of course) prefer to have Metroid Prime 1 & 2 in the same package for $30, but hey...I'll still get it... That's a game I never quite made it through with the Gamecube, but loved Metroid Prime 3.
Widescreen progressive-scan with Wii controls. I'm sold.
(01) @ Feb 5th 2009 7:10PM
When? And how much?
Shadow El @ Feb 5th 2009 9:06PM
If you don't have the option to change the firing button to B like in Corruption, I actually don't think I'll be purchasing this. Shooting with A and jumping with B would play like garbage in my opinion.
DaisukeKiriyama @ Feb 5th 2009 10:44PM
I am really excited for this release.
I'm hoping for MP2 that they add online multiplayer.
Crusty Magic @ Feb 6th 2009 1:41PM
You shoot with the A button?
PhazonPhantom @ Feb 11th 2009 12:42PM
I can't wait for this. But one thing is bothering me. On the nintendo channel i watched the English Wii trailer for pikmin and at the point where it shows all the games coming out for the New Play Control! Metroid Prime 1 and 2 weren't there...
