New Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Crystal Bearers trailer! Really!
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time is out in Japan this week, bringing a delightful bonus along: the promised Crystal Bearers trailer, which a helpful YouTube friend has uploaded (though with a watermark to forever remind us of his helpfulness). Head past the break to see the new footage.
We haven't seen footage of this game since May 2007, and it wasn't really enough to get a good idea of gameplay. But this trailer features entire, sumptuous minutes of in-game footage, revealing one of the weirdest Final Fantasy games ever -- and that's even if we ignore the incongruous soundtrack!
It appears to be an action game in which players pick up items and monsters with a sort of telekinetic power, and toss them. We very much hope that it turns out to be better than Square Enix's other recent physics (and tossing-stuff)-based action game, Dawn of Mana. Unfortunately, the trailer doesn't offer new information about any release plans, but its very inclusion suggests it's coming soon!

Wow, normally I tune out news about FF games because frankly, I usually don't like them. This just might be my cup of tea, however. A sort of Zelda-esque game with telekenetic powers? Awesome!
@tomic @ Jan 28th 2009 11:40AM
Was that... country rock in the beginning there? Wow...
Still, I'm liking the look of this game as much as I always have. I hope we see it stateside this year.
Russ Carroll @ Jan 28th 2009 11:46AM
I have no idea what I was watching for the first half of the video. Looks like Square is trying something new out with the gameplay. I all for that :).
Onomah @ Jan 28th 2009 11:48AM
This is actually quite impressive looking. It looks a bit dated in places but I don't know, maybe that is just me. In any case I have no stomach for turn based combat and this looks like it might be a fun time
Mr Khan @ Jan 28th 2009 11:50AM
w00t! It was almost worth the wait
Highlar @ Jan 28th 2009 11:56AM
I have to say, this game is looking pretty good! Kind of part way between FFXII and the original FFCC with the character design, and I'm liking it. :) Hopefully now that we have THIS trailer, we'll start seeing more about this. Do we know if there is going to be an English version trailer with the US release of FFCC:EoT?
AmitZ @ Jan 28th 2009 12:01PM
Looks AWESOME!
Sounds even better.
cyan09 @ Jan 28th 2009 12:10PM
Awesome. So glad this game wasn't canned, like I feared. It looks as if we Nintendo owners might actually get a real Final Fantasy game and story instead of the crystal chronicles type crap shoved on us previously.
samfish @ Jan 28th 2009 12:22PM
That's a Final Fantasy game?? That actually looks...really cool. This might be the first Final Fantasy game that I not only buy, but actually play, too (I have XII, but never bothered to play it for some reason).
Josh @ Jan 28th 2009 1:45PM
Dude, I'm the same. I got XII for $5 on clearance at Target last year (black label version, too), but only just started playing it a few days ago because a friend told me to.
Unfortunately, I was only able to play it for a few hours until I decided its MMO/FFXI-like battle system was way too boring for me to keep playing.
I like to be at least *a little* more involved in battle than just assigning my character to attack once in the beginning and then occasionally using a spell or two until the enemy dies.
kidhero1000 @ Jan 28th 2009 12:22PM
What the hell? That is a real farfetched assumption. Seriously a company like IBM wouldn't cut FOUR THOUSAND jobs just because that's what companies do when it's a recession especially when the share is 10% up. There must be another cause or that's really unprofessional and well...back to my point why the hell would they cut 4000 jobs for the hell of it?
sorry I'm getting ahead of myself but your sentence would be better phrased as...
"sounds like they used the recession as a COVER to fire people even though they didn't need to."
Unless those 4000 jobs were pure baggage to the company it still wouldn't make sense though. :P

Comments before watching video: *facepalm* that the person watermarked a video that wasn't even theirs...
Comments after watching video: Ah hahaha! WTF @ the music in the beginning!!! But then, WOW, that actually looks like a really good game!
It really looks nothing like the previous Crystal Chronicles games, save for the character races being the same. Oh, that begs the question, do any of the previous Crystal Chronicles games have any connections between each other? Or are they just connected in name only (or something like that)?
Also, if/when this leaves Japan, I hope they keep the Japanese voice acting in the game at least as an option, but I doubt they will, because this is a Wii game (therefore they see it as "last generation", and most last generation games only had English voice acting for their English releases) and possibly for other reasons.
Blue @ Jan 28th 2009 2:04PM
The reason "last generation" games usually only had one voice track was most likely due to storage limitations. And if they have to pick one language, they're going to pick the spoken language of the country it's being released in.
The only real exceptions to this are NIS games, which, let's be honest, are not technically impressive despite being bucket-loads of fun, and fighting games, which have very little in the way of dialogue.
Josh @ Jan 28th 2009 2:14PM
That's usually the cited reason, but I don't know how much I can believe it. DVDs really do have a good amount of storage space, after all.
I'm still wondering about the Crystal Chronicles "are the games related?" thing, though...
TwEE @ Jan 28th 2009 2:52PM
Hey this is looking really fun..
TwEE @ Jan 29th 2009 3:56AM
Ign has a clean video up, and this game is looking great.. http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/748546/final-fantasy-crystal-chronicles-wii/videos/finalf_crystalchronicle_012809.html
TwEE @ Jan 29th 2009 4:12AM
Uh.. that link goes to the old one for some reason. But there is a clean one out there and it makes a world of difference.
Let me try again..

Hardy @ Jan 28th 2009 4:47PM
YES! Nintendowiifanboy, I politely request that you try and get a release date out of Square-Enix.
Hardy @ Jan 28th 2009 5:02PM
Also... Does anyone know Japanese who can translate this? lol
JC Fletcher @ Jan 28th 2009 5:52PM
I'm sure they'd be completely forthcoming with that info.
MRLN @ Jan 28th 2009 4:22PM
That looks... amazing. Like, I want this more than FFXIII. I've dreamed of throwing things around with my mind my whole life!!!
Xta Large (Formerly Fatass) @ Jan 28th 2009 5:43PM
Gameplay looks like it might be interesting (maybe a little too waggle-friendly), but jeez, those visuals are pretty bad. I'm comparing this vid to better looking games Square released on the PS2 years ago... there's no real reason for that.
Pill @ Jan 29th 2009 11:22AM
The fact that its on the Wii isn't reason enough? Its funny to still see people still "shocked" by game graphics on the Wii. If you want a Final Fantasy game where you can see every pore on your character's androgynous face, then you should look into buying a Playstation 3.
finalark @ Jan 28th 2009 6:43PM
Well, there goes any and all hope I've ever had for a true FF:CC sequel.
Uncle Muscles @ Jan 28th 2009 7:07PM
How do I describe how this looks? It's kind of a steampunk Twilight Princess meets wild west European medieval fantasy. I'm really interested, but, then again, this kind of liberal borrowing of various settings might be par for the course for FF anything. I've only played the older FF games, so I wouldn't know.
And, strangely enough, the little golden-haired child protagonist looks kind of badass. Maybe it's the goggles. And the flying.
MRLN @ Jan 28th 2009 8:22PM
Well, I just saw the new FFXIII trailer, and I suppose my last comment is void. XIII needs to come out for PC...
And the "Wild West" portion looks like it's only a portion of the game. Like the Gerudo Valley or... any other game with a desert stage.
Rez Delnava @ Jan 29th 2009 4:00AM
For some reason, this reminds me of the original FF Tactics. Maybe its the Chocobo chase scene (it is kinda like the opening cinematic of FFT).
Cool video, odd choice of music, but I think the game looks too waggle intensive for my liking.
chriscanberg @ Jan 30th 2009 2:51PM
This is quite possibly the weirdest Final Fantasy game I've ever seen. But you know what? I encourage weird. Weird concepts are what the Wii is all about. And that gameplay looks insanely fun. From the comments, I can tell that there's no stateside release planned. And I not only encourage WiiFanboy, but Joystiq in its entirety to try and get something out of Square Enix. Wii needs games like this.
@tomic @ Jan 30th 2009 7:54PM
...No stateside release planned? Where'd you get that? The game this trailer comes with (Echoes of Time) is coming to the U.S. in March. It'd be pretty funny to give Americans a bonus trailer of a game they never intend to sell them.
If you mean there's no set release date, there's no official release date for Japan yet either.
Matias @ Feb 8th 2009 1:07PM
with what I've seen on the trailers of both FFCC, I'm waiting more for this one, it looks like zelda in a FF universe, and that combination is made of win.
