2008 showed World Tour defeat Rock Band 2 in sales
In 2008, Guitar Hero World Tour sold a lot of copies to anxious would-be rockers. Its competition, Rock Band 2, also sold a lot of copies, but, in the end, was not enough to best Activision's title. So, you want exact figures? Well, World Tour unloaded 3.4 million copies on consumers, across all platforms, whereas Rock Band 2 only sold 1.7 million, across all platforms, according to the NPD. Interesting stuff.
What we'd like to know, however, is how World Tour stacks up against Rock Band when including the first game into the mix. Has the Rock Band franchise sold more than 3.4 million units? Guess we'll have to wait and see on that one. Considering how well Rock Band did on Wii and other platforms, it would be very interesting to see them stacked side-by-side.

Good. Serves Harmonix right for giving the shaft to the PS3 version and especially the Wii version.
Release them at the same time and make everything equal.
That said, since Harmonix is proving themselves to be the dumbest developer in the industry, I'm willing to bet $5 dollars that The Beatles game, if it gets a Wii version at all, gets a late release and lacks features.
...and will STILL outsell the inevitably superior PS360 versions.

Except, that (at least for my wife and I) Rock Band 2 is a better game than Guitar Hero WT. My only issue with RB2 is really the lame drums. They need to bite the bullet and make it fully GT drums compatible.

You said something about being able to comment on Google searches?
Where, how?
Mr Khan @ Jan 26th 2009 3:28PM
It kinda draws the line with the quality-sales thing that's going on with Wii and PS360
Not that that implies anything, just a thought
Mr Khan @ Jan 26th 2009 3:29PM
what the hell? That first comment didn't appear for a while, i had assumed it was deleted...
Don't go breakin' down on me, Wiifanboy, i needs yah
KeegdnaB @ Jan 26th 2009 1:16PM
Well not everyone bought the full band kit for WT.
Hafk @ Jan 26th 2009 5:12PM
And I know many people who just bought the Rock Band 1 disc just to do guitar and vocals, as well as people who used their Rock Band Band bundle for Rock Band 2. Your point being?
juangrande386 @ Jan 26th 2009 1:19PM
exactly i want to see Full Band GuitarHero WT vs Full Band RockBand2 sales figures
xeleion @ Jan 27th 2009 2:02AM
Well, don't forget that many people bought only the software to RB2 and just used their old RB1 instruments. I don't think the Full Band only specs will be accurate enough to decide a holiday victor.
CalcProgrammer1 @ Jan 26th 2009 1:48PM
I bought the World Tour full kit and then bought the RB2 game. I like the World Tour instruments better but I think RB2 is better (better track list, download content, import capability, etc). I got them for the 360.
Adam @ Jan 26th 2009 2:09PM
It's probably also worth mentioning that RB2 was only *out* for less than two weeks in 2008 (it released on Dec. 18). GH released near the end of October, so it did have almost a full two months' head start. I'd like to see how much each sold in six months' time, once they've each been out that long.
KIMP @ Jan 26th 2009 2:16PM
This is simply a dumb comparaison as Rock Band 2 on the Wii came out three months later then the PS3 and X360 versions. This hurt the sale of RB2 for sure.
As for me, I like the Guitar Hero World Tour instruments better, so I bought that kit. And bought RB2, the disc only. Its really the best of both world has the two games have pros and cons. For me there is no clear winner between the two.
No playlist is better then the other since it is simply a matter of taste. Both have some great choices for me. And getting RB2 for $50 for about 88 songs was a steal!
Instruments aside, here's my PERSONAL choices for the Wii versions of GHWT and RB2:
Graphic = GHWT
Audio = GHWT
Guitar = GHWT
Drums = RB2
Bass = Tie
Vocals = RB2
DLC = Tie (so far but RB2 will probably end up being better)
Menus presentation = GHWT
Building characters = GHWT
Easier for everyone to pick-up and play = RB2
Rocketboy @ Jan 26th 2009 2:32PM
Here's my version of your chart:
Graphic = RB2
Audio = RB2
Guitar = GHWT
Drums = GHWT
Bass = RB2
Vocals = RB2
DLC = I'm ready to call it for RB2
Menus presentation = RB2 (by FAR)
Building characters = RB2
Easier for everyone to pick-up and play = RB2
also..
Band / Story Mode = RB2
Replayability = RB2 (You can only use DLC in quick play for GTWT? Sorry, that's lame)
Band Creation = RB2 (You can have a stable band, no random characters for the NPC's)
KIMP @ Jan 26th 2009 3:07PM
I dont like the Menus presentation in RB2. I dont like the way the songs titles and infos are written with the cover on the left.
The characters looks too cartoonish in RB2 compared to GHWT. In GHWT I easily created myself within 5 minutes and it looks EXACTLY like me! Did the same with my girlfriend. Never managed to do it as good in RB2.
Garu @ Jan 26th 2009 2:39PM
I just don't have the room (or really the interest) for buying a full band kit. I'm surprised that anyone has the room for this! So I'm not really interested in Rick Band. I would pick up GH: World Tour if it goes on sale again (I sould have picked it up when it was on sale at Amazon a few weeks ago) but again, I'm only interested in the original guitar mode.
Garu @ Jan 26th 2009 2:40PM
Rick Band???
Sorry for the typo. I amen "Rock Band"
Garu @ Jan 26th 2009 2:41PM
(GROAN!)
Mr Khan @ Jan 26th 2009 3:02PM
Yeah, see, that's what you get for being console agnostic, and not wanking off to the 360
AuntFeFe @ Jan 29th 2009 8:47AM
I wank off to the 360 every day....sometimes twice!
Slingerland @ Jan 26th 2009 4:58PM
Man, is that image from the first Hell in a Cell match from 1998? That's some good shit, Hinkle.
Oh, and I guess I don't care about music games.
Gewurz Man got equipped with... XBox 360! @ Jan 26th 2009 5:46PM
On the Wii side of things, Guitar Hero WT was THE answer. Rock Band 2 really came out way too late to compete, but at least the store is open and it's getting there.
And yet, as the sole reason I got a 360 (initially) I'm going to have to say, yes, RB2 ftw.
alienhead @ Jan 27th 2009 10:49AM
So these figures are show that consumers actually purchasing the product at stores and online retailers or is this showing how many copies the manufacturing companies shipped to retailers. Two different things.
