Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Heroes in a Magazine Preview
The latest issue of NGamer magazine has a preview of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brawler that was originally revealed last month. It's officially titled TMNT: Smash Up (surely a blatant attempt to evoke memories of a certain other brawler), will feature arenas that change throughout scraps (so you'll change locations as you fight, as happened in Power Stone 2), and will see players defeating their opponents by either knocking them off the stage (à la -- oh! -- Super Smash Bros.) or emptying their health meter entirely, which can be refilled with pizza, natch.
There will be no motion-controlled attacks (though waggle isn't ruled out for other aspects, and there will be context-sensitive moves), and what is described as a "dark, gritty" graphical style. Turtles co-creator Peter Laird is penning the single-player story, but what we really want to know is the character roster; currently, only the Turtles and Splinter are confirmed. We're calling shotgun on Krang.

Mirage Comics turtles were great; they weren't lame until the Saturday morning cartoon raped them and turned them into Mickey Mouse. You fail, regardless.
Gundam_Warrior @ Jan 24th 2009 2:52PM
Crossing my fingers for Usagi Yojimbo.
Haohmaru @ Jan 24th 2009 3:19PM
@GW
Sorry. The above reply was obviously meant for x13. I agree with you on Usagi, even though he was only a guest character from an entirely different comic book by Stan Sakai. :D
Razor @ Jan 24th 2009 6:42PM
Agreed, I read the first comics years ago when they came out, and they were really great stories. The afternoon cartoon series really took the dignity away from the characters and story line, although the video game based on the cartoon is an all-time classic. I couldn't tell you how many quarters I pumped in to those machines in the late 80's...

turtles are gay
Haohmaru @ Jan 24th 2009 3:20PM
Your favorite Castlevania is Judgment. Your opinion is meaningless.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 24th 2009 11:08PM
No but you are.
Andy @ Jan 24th 2009 3:55PM
Basically, it's a TMNT fighting game with a single player "story" tacked on? What's wrong with another arcade game, like what they made the last time TMNT was popular?

"to evoke memories of a certain other brawler"
Is this article in someway against super smash bros. Brawl?!
Chris Greenhough @ Jan 25th 2009 2:06AM
Um, no? How would you assume that's negative?
Bowser Rogozhin @ Jan 25th 2009 6:14AM
Chris, there's no need to rub it in. We all know Danny is illiterate. Shame on you.
esposch @ Jan 24th 2009 5:10PM
Hey guys, this is a little off topic but:
How much does the new theme song (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=dRnRUtMHGow&feature=related) suck compared to the old one (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=qI0FbYe3lRE&NR=1)
Aaron @ Jan 24th 2009 5:28PM
"They're Heroes in a Half-shell...AND. THEY'RE. GREEEEEN!!"
That was such a rad song back in the day. The new one is a joke.
Jumbo @ Jan 24th 2009 5:50PM
TMNT: Tournament Fighters sucked.
Kios @ Jan 25th 2009 1:18AM
What!?!?! Maybe the sega version...but the snes version of TMNT: Tournament Fighters was awesome...
maduin @ Jan 25th 2009 9:54AM
the SNES version rocked. It was practically the first fighting game that incorporated a super meter and super moves into the engine, even before Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo.
wutdaheckman @ Jan 24th 2009 6:19PM
dibs on Slash
Gewurz Man got equipped with... XBox 360! @ Jan 25th 2009 10:02AM
hah, Slash. I'd forgotten about him.
SoshiKitai @ Jan 24th 2009 6:36PM
Pshaw, totally about Shredder. Any Shredder, since they've all been the same in attitude.
...but only the old foot soldiers. They were classic.
Mr Khan @ Jan 24th 2009 7:22PM
Mirage Comics themselves will be fleshing out the roster. I am certainly pleased by what i see
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 24th 2009 11:11PM
Um well I always wanted to see TMNT in a fighting game but as unlockables not really in their own game.
Someone should make a game with Thundercats,Silverhawks,He-man and TMNT.
TwEE @ Jan 25th 2009 1:21AM
So wait... uncle phil is the shredder?
intro94 @ Jan 25th 2009 1:56AM
as long as is konami doing it...because while the early turtles games were among best of its era, the latests have been awarded as poop
LeChuck @ Jan 25th 2009 3:27AM
This is from Ubisoft but they've only made one TMNT game so far, the one based on the CG movie. The rest are Konami's doing.
GatorSax2010 @ Jan 25th 2009 2:47PM
Dibs on Bebop and/or Rocksteady.
8-bit.artist @ Jan 25th 2009 7:05PM
if they want this to compete with brawl, they really need to have a pretty big roster. the turtles, splinter, shredder, krang, bebop, rocksteady, casey jones, rat king, baxter stockman, metal head, leatherhead, tokka, rahzer..... and the super secret character VANILLA ICE!
GO NINJA GO NINJA GO!
Haohmaru @ Jan 27th 2009 11:47PM
You mustn't forget the oft-overlooked Mondo Gecko.
