Rumor: DSi out April 4 for $180
IGN's Matt Casamassina reports that "multiple sources close to Nintendo" have specified a release date and price point for the eagerly-awaited (by us, anyway) North American release of the Nintendo DSi. According to whomever, the system will be released on April 4, for a crushing $179.99. It's still a deal compared to the Japanese DSi, which retails in Japan for 18,900 yen ($212) and can be imported for $250, but it's also $20 less than an Xbox 360 and $10 more than a PSP.
This timing basically falls in line with previous comments from Nintendo about the DSi's North American release. Reggie Fils-Aime said last fall that the system would launch "certainly after April", but context indicated that he meant within fiscal 2009, which starts in April.

My DS Lite just died for no reason and now I can't decide whether to wait until April for this thing, or just buy a new DS Lite. Decisions, decisions. Does it have to be so close to a 360's price?!
igorponweed @ Jan 14th 2009 10:48AM
I'd get this, so I could have downloadable games. But whatever you want to do.
igorponweed @ Jan 14th 2009 10:48AM
I was pretty excited about DSiWare, but $10 ore than a PSP? I'll wait and see when something good will be releas- oh wait, never mind. I'll be getting the flip book thing, DIY Wario Ware and the art styles. But maybe I want some downloadable games for PS- oh wait. Most of them are on PS3.
Dan @ Jan 14th 2009 10:58AM
I'm all about getting into the DSi Store, it sounds like good time. Plus, the daydream that Nintendo would let us use some Virtual Console games on the go is reaaaally enticing. I just don't wanna wait 3 months to play my DS games again, haha.
igorponweed @ Jan 14th 2009 11:08AM
I see. Surviving without TWEWY is not possible. I say pay your friend a few bucks so you can borrow it or something. Besides, if you never played TWEWY, you can survive on homeconsoles and iPods.
chispito @ Jan 14th 2009 1:11PM
Judging from the DS's online capabilities, and how well Nintendo has developed Wiiware, I wouldn't count on being impressed by DSiware.
cralox @ Jan 14th 2009 11:01AM
I agree with Dan 100%.
aj @ Jan 14th 2009 12:15PM
Getting people to pay more money for the same thing. BRILLIANT! No wonder Nintendo has a trillion dollars.
chispito @ Jan 14th 2009 1:13PM
They must have some record company execs advising them.
Cxplorer @ Jan 14th 2009 12:44PM
Me want DSi
Emily @ Jan 14th 2009 12:45PM
I am considering buying a DSi, especially since I don''t own one and the last Nintendo handheld I bought was a GBA. But if I can get an XBox 360 for $200, and that system has things I want on it too, I don't know what I'm going to do.
Spike @ Jan 15th 2009 1:19PM
don't get the arcade, wait until you have $300, the only thing the arcade has over the pro is the free arcade games on that disc
Mokano40 @ Jan 14th 2009 12:50PM
too expensive for me, if the PSP marketing department can come up with some colorful games it could get ahead of the DSi because of the price.
EXTREME Seph @ Jan 14th 2009 12:55PM
I'll just buy this anyway. Not like I didn't pay the same price minus $10 for my DS Lite anyway. (lol bundles)
Ghaleon @ Jan 14th 2009 1:43PM
Is it going to be a trend that the 3rd gen of their handhelds will always be worthless and/or retarded?
EXTREME Seph @ Jan 15th 2009 4:29AM
So the GameBoy Color was worthless and/or retarded?
Spideyman @ Jan 14th 2009 3:06PM
Personally, I feel the DSI is overpriced for the few added features Nintendo has added. Just not worth the money.
TheCoats @ Jan 14th 2009 3:14PM
when you put it like that - i could go for a new 360...
Brandon @ Jan 14th 2009 4:32PM
That 360 your thinking of is 200 right. but you will have to buy a hard drive which is 60 bucks so your not saving as much as you thought you were hugh. If you want a 360 buy the pro cause it hase a 60 gig hard drive for 300 so really the dsi is a steal for 180. And the psp has like no new games coming out. its fun at first but then when you see only like nine games coming out for 09 your like what the f**k!
Jerome @ Jan 14th 2009 5:33PM
I haven't bought a DS yet, and was waiting till this launched, but almost $200?!, I think I'll get a Lite.
Besides the seemingly experimental cameras, the main advantage of this system is the promise of downloadable content, but if Wiiware is anything to go by, it will likely be mostly mediocre. Add to that the shorter battery life and lack of GBA slot, and the Lite is looking like the better choice to me.
Shoot, except for the cheapy cameras, this basically just adds crippled versions of media features the PSP already has, and it will cost more, despite the fact that it's technically inferior in almost every way. I applaud Nintendo on their success, but Sony and Microsoft really need to get off their duffs and give them some decent competition. I'm not too fond of their new business strategy of charging inflated prices for old technology.
PX @ Jan 14th 2009 6:21PM
i would buy it but already have a psp. ds is fun but sometimes you get bored of the games. i think once i see someone with it, i would want it. lol
Rosario @ Jan 14th 2009 11:27PM
I dont why everyones downplaying Wiiware, Ive seen a good amount of downloads I wanna get. And I personally could care less about the no GBA slot. I have a grand total of maybe 3 games I play so I dont really care about that. With that said this DS doesnt really do anything for me specifically. I dont take my DS outside my house so the camera has no use for me except if I get bored and want to take some random pictures, but I have my camera, phone etc. so I would really use that.
The browser is anything to get excited about either, I have my laptop, iPod Touch, phone so wouldnt be using that either.
The only thing that interest me is DSiWare but we know it wont be anything special till probably months down the road. While my DS is on the verge of breaking, I rather just wait till a custom bundle comes out (Kingdom Hearts) and get it then. But I do agree that $180 is kinda pricey for this, I kinda expected them to drop the price for the DS Lite and price the DSi around $140, maybe $150.
Danny @ Jan 14th 2009 11:58PM
Let's see music, camera that can transfer photos to the Photo channel on Wii, bigger screen, DSiware, added features and VC games on the go? Yep I'm definately picking one up.
GrungeSpoo @ Jan 15th 2009 3:53AM
Eh, I'll think about considering to get one if/when Megaman 9 is realeased on it.
Jedi_Liz @ Jan 15th 2009 10:30AM
If they launch with more than TWO colors, I'll buy one, possibly. I already have a red ds Phat (3 years old) and DSLIte (Coral Pink, almost a year old), but I'd buy this for the camera so I can take pictures inside of AC:WW. At least I hope I could......would be easier than my digital camera for the in game pictures.
Y. Kurokawa @ Jan 15th 2009 9:09PM
I might possibly, maybe, perhaps, have an inkling to buy this if those downloadable games (about the only difference worth noting) weren't region locked.
Means there is the possibility of a good release being unavailable. Fail.
That and it being nearly $60 more than a Lite with no appreciable gain in functionality. After all - everybody who's anybody has to have a camera on their portable device...
Eleniel @ Jan 15th 2009 9:11PM
I have zero reason to get one of these--I only got my DS Lite a year ago so it's functioning splendidly and I certainly have no shortage of cartridge games--and yet I just WANT one. It's so neat! And even *thinner* than the Lite! Coooool
Zoku @ Jan 25th 2009 8:58AM
It's also region locked. Are you sure it still looks as tempting now? ;D
ehh umm...idk @ Jan 16th 2009 5:40PM
i dont know about this? it seems like there just trying to take the psp's features that the ds doesn't have and put them on the ds, taking away any advantage of psp's selling more. Dam Sony needs a new strategy. yea instead of getting a dsi i would just get a psp but already have one ;)...or i would buy my 360 a wireless adapter so i can get internet.
Zoku @ Jan 25th 2009 8:59AM
Definatly not getting this. It's way overpriced for something which does the same thing as the old Lite, bar the taking videos and photos... which i can do on my phone already - why would i want to take photos with a gaming console anyway..? .___.
It's also going to be region locked... so if you buy this, say goodbye to import games.
Not worth it at all.
