Top 5: Worst. Cutscenes. Ever.
According to Activision (and after all, they made Pitfall!), video games will "eclipse" all other forms of media. Head honcho Mike Griffith went on to say that "Movies, recorded music and TV - these are all stagnating or contracting entertainment sectors."
I'm not sure how much I agree with that statement. Strictly in terms of cash flow, it's already happening. Gaming is a fairly pricey hobby, and it's been outpacing the other forms of media for several years (in terms of growth). Yet I have a difficult time imagining a time where video games are everyone's preferred form of escapism. Although their respective industries may see drastic changes with direct, indirect, or unrelated connections to gaming, music and film will always have a place. As much as I love gaming, it's not rare that I find myself preferring to zone out with TV or just listen to music and read instead of playing a video game.
What I do see is a further merging of the three into ubiquitous, all-purpose media devices. Microsoft and Sony currently do this, and it's only a matter of time before Nintendo catches up. While most households currently don't rely on gaming consoles as their sole provider of film / TV and music, I imagine that this will change. Perhaps the mediums will start to bleed into one another. With Metal Gear Solid blurring the lines between game and film and Audiosurf doing the same for games and music, perhaps media will merge and propagate a completely new and unique form of entertainment. Interesting stuff.
What was this Top 5 about, again? Oh, right: cut scenes. A lot of them stink. Here's the 5 worst ones.

How can Metal Gear: Solid 2 not make this list. I was in college when we played through it. We left for dinner at the start of a cut scene and when we returned, it still wasn't over.
Kaes Delgrego @ Jan 12th 2009 1:07PM
I totally believe that. MGS2's cut scenes (particularly near the end) are completely ridiculous. I still don't know what happened.
The reason I left it off is that the Top 5 is Nintendo-specific (with a few admitted stretches to the rule). This is almost always the case, unless noted otherwise.

Metal Gear Solid 2 has really long cutscenes (like the rest of the series) but they're really good. And kind of the main reason to play a Metal Gear Solid game in the first place.
SoshiKitai @ Jan 12th 2009 5:12PM
It really depends on your taste really. If you enjoy the story of the Metal Gear Solid series, you don't mind the extra long cutscenes.
And why in the world would you think MGS2 has really long cutscenes? It's all about MGS4. Now THAT has really long cutscenes.... goddamn Naomi talking for how long...
And usually I love MGS cutscenes, but I just hated listening to Naomi talking about the same thing - over and over - only slightly adding a bit more information each time.

I liked the story in Super Paper Mario... =(
As you said, the dialogues are well written, so it isn't a pain to read them. There's even this bartender, you can give him some coins and he'll tell you more about the game's story, and it's worth it, because it's the Mario game with the most developed story and characters!
There are a lot of dialogues, but at least they had something to the story! (Unlike Maria's breast complex)
So I don't think it deserve being #4...
Oh well, great list however! =D
I'm glad (I think...) I have finally been able to watch all the cut scenes from that Zelda game! =D

I got castlevania judgement >_>, the voice acting in japanese is better, but the scenes are still bad, not only maria's ones, sometimes I feel the scenes make no sense, like they put together random phrases.
I always laugh so hard at the resident evil one, specially when Chris's face appears.
LOL zelda rap, first time I hear it.
I haven't played the cd-i games, I preffer to think they don't exist, but I saw some of the cutscenes in the AVGN review. And I saw the mario hotel long ago, it was so weird, specially when mario says "gay luigi".
igorponweed @ Jan 12th 2009 1:50PM
Castlevania judgement. What is your prize? Boobs. You kill a whole bunch of people, for boobs.
Adolph @ Jan 12th 2009 2:23PM
YUP. It's all about boobs. babies need them to drink. men need them to squeeze, women need them to feel pretty.
EVERYONE LOVES BOOBS.
SoshiKitai @ Jan 12th 2009 5:15PM
Everyone keeps bringing that up. :P Back in the day, there were tons of (Japanese) shows that showed flat-chested girls being totally obsessed and jealous of women who had huge breasts.
In all honesty, it makes sense in some way.
But it DOESN'T make sense for something like Castlevania.
-then again, you shouldn't see Judgement as a Castlevania game. :P
Binkie @ Jan 12th 2009 2:23PM
Castlevania Judgement had to be the worst one that I saw...then I saw MK: Sub Zero! Dang, that sucked! Sexuality doesn't make a game good and besides the reviews, seeing this really doesn't make me want to buy this game. Opportunity lost, Konami! I hope this got an M rating! In my opinion, parents don't need to get this game for their kids!
Mr Khan @ Jan 12th 2009 2:24PM
That darknut was standing in midair, and that wizard dissolved to leave his own, beating hart
creepy
Bo @ Jan 12th 2009 3:23PM
Eh, I'm amazed the Donkey Kong rap from the Donkey Kong 64 game didn't make it. That used to irritate the crap out of me.
Antonio @ Jan 12th 2009 4:07PM
Good call on the DK Rap, Bo. I'm sure some people love it, but it's just painful for me. I cringe just thinking about it.
I really hate "catch all" statements on Top 5/10 lists. It just seems like a cop out. I'd prefer that one CD-i Zelda game be mentioned instead of conveniently grouping them all together for number one. Not knocking your list specifically, as I see it a lot (remember when Time's Person of the Year was "You"?), but just something that came to my mind.
Core2 @ Jan 12th 2009 4:53PM
Thank you for introducing me to the #5 spot on that list's video. It scarred me for life while making me laugh. A lot.
Same with #1, although I already knew about CD-i. CD-i was terrible. :P
And yeah. All of these were hilarious.
SPM's slow text problem is so lame. I played the first two chapters of the game at a friend's house and the next time I got the game I had to start a new file and couldn't skip the annoyingly long intro. T_T
braeburn @ Jan 12th 2009 5:59PM
I had the same problem with SPM. Sitting through it once was OK, I guess, but the second time was unbearable. It was bad enough that I just gave up.
Zacka537 @ Jan 12th 2009 7:04PM
Hmmmm.... There is no Sonic 06 on here.
Unless this was Nintendo-only consoles (which I think you guys did) Sonic 06 shouldve been on there.
