CES 2009: Opera's new SDK could mean better Wii browsing down the line
So, uh, we guess that bit about the updated Internet Channel being done and on the way out the door was spurious after all. Awesome. We're basing that evaluation on two pieces of evidence: first, December came and went; and second, Opera has just now announced a new version of their software development kit for "devices" (as in, not computers). And if Nintendo is just now getting the updated tools, we can expect to wait for a new version of the browser. If Nintendo finished a new version already and Opera just now released an updated SDK, then, uh, there are some grumpy programmers over at Nintendo right now.The new SDK includes Opera Link, which lets users create persistent bookmarks and Speed Dial nodes, which means Wii users could update their bookmarks and such in a less annoying interface. It also includes an updated version of Opera Zoom, for smoother zooming and panning. What it doesn't include is Flash -- updating the Flash Player SDK is Adobe's business.

I'll pay 5 bucks for a Wii Firefox browser.

Nintendo should just talk to Youtube and make a Youtube channel for Wii.
Rocketboy @ Jan 8th 2009 2:24PM
Better yet, Hulu on Wii.

Youtube works for me in the Wii browser. Are there conditions in which it doesn't?
Regardless, we really need Flash 9 support for a host of sites.
rodjoh @ Jan 8th 2009 5:56PM
Yeah I know it works, I use it too. That's my point... that's pretty much what people use it the most for.

Wii needs a bigger harddrive for flash video anyways. it just doesn't have the capacity to steam large videos.
They really need to work on that if they want their webbrowser to be useful.
As it stands, it takes far to long and it too annoying to navigate when most people have a computer probably right near the system.

No need for a Hard drive when you can just use progressive streaming like Fujisofts Ulexit player for Devices .....Devices like the Wii

You don't even need a hard drive to stream content off the internet. All you'd need is lots of RAM, and the Wii seems to have enough for YouTube videos.

It's entirely possible that Nintendo got access to the development tools before the rest of the world, I would say. My guess is that what Opera is releasing today, Ninty's had for a while now.

The flash player thing was never Nintendo or Opera's fault, it's been Adobe's from the beginning
Thanks for clarifying
Rocketboy @ Jan 8th 2009 4:19PM
Well, it was Adobe's fault to begin with, but now it's Nintendo's fault. It's never been Opera's fault at any time. It's up to Nintendo to pay Opera to update the browser, unless Nintendo took over the code base as well.

lol sounds you're about to turn your attacks to adobe but yea we need a better flash player!

Being from the UK, I luckily have access to the BBC iPlayer meaning the internet channel gets a lot of usage from me.
Sure, it's not the greatest resolution compared to my laptop but it's conveniently connected to a better sound system and a much larger screen making it perfect for watching "TV" in bed!
