Oh snap! Mushroom Men dev has Deadly words
In an interview with MTV Multiplayer, Dan Borth, lead developer on Red Fly Studio's Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars, offers his thoughts on the market for "core" Wii games, his own game's chances on a system dominated by Wii Fit and such, and designing a game to be accessible to a wide and varied audience.
Oh, and he calls out Deadly Creatures. When asked if he's familiar with Rainbow Studios' critter-based brawler, Borth responded with: "I have heard about Deadly Creatures. I have many opinions on that game, especially how it came into being right after THQ received our pitch document for Mushroom Men. I will let you draw your own conclusions."
We can't say if there really was any such malevolent behavior behind the conception of Deadly Creatures, but oh snap just the same. And while we may not have seen a parallel before, now that he mentions it, they're both 3D action/fighting games about small creatures adventuring, unseen, in the human world. But we still think Creatures could turn out awesome.

I'm still extremely interested in both. I just need to beat more of the games I already own before I purchase more.
Blue_Falcon @ Jan 7th 2009 11:33AM
I think they're kind of stretching their comparison a bit.

Because mushrooms have so much in common with tarantulas and scorpions. Deadly Creatures looks way more fun than Mushroom Men anyway, in my opinion. Mushrooms are boring.
Anti-Villian @ Jan 7th 2009 12:44PM
Yeh because we all know what the games protagonist looks like decides how fun a game is, tarantulas and scorpians are way cooler then then muchrooms! mushrooms suck! I mean, we need more developers to concentrate on things like this, imagine if they decided to make a game about an italian plumber?!?! that would be the crappest game ever!

The reviews aren't fantastic. Why would he think this game should sell really well? It's only really a problem when a well received game fails to sell, then you have a case(and even then reviewers often have totally different standards of fun to the average customer)
Dustin @ Jan 7th 2009 1:06PM
Reviews shouldn't be a determining factor. It's impossible to be 100% non-bias when it comes to gaming. While reviews can be helpful, you really should decide for yourself before you get a game. I have Mushroom Men and I enjoy the hell out of it.
Demotruk @ Jan 7th 2009 6:54PM
Perhaps, but what about it does he think should make it sell? If reviews are bad, and there's not a massive word of mouth element which there doesn't seem to be, how are most people to know that it's good(assuming there's something wrong with the review)?

It is really fun, though. Probably too easy for the "121 stars in Galaxy on launch day" crowd but for the rest of us it's great. If you liked the proper Rayman games, this thing has a similar feel and gameplay, but with more interesting and funny sound and visuals. The only thing I'd change is the camera, which is in dire need of a centering button and zoom in/out.
samfish @ Jan 7th 2009 12:44PM
Camera in Mushroom Men can be centered by pressing the minus button.
Otherwise, I agree that the camera in MM is a friggin' disaster. It's pretty much ruining the game for me :(

"Sub-average platformer"
"feels familiar"
ouch.
Maybe the Butterfly Garden folks have some beef with Deadly Creatures, but Mushroom Men is a platformer. From the looks of it, Deadly Creatures is an action game.
Oh wait, there mushroom character fights a spider.
In that case, Spider-Man 3 devs should complain.
samfish @ Jan 7th 2009 12:45PM
I think he's being silly. Mushroom Men reminds me of the part in Okami where you become really tiny, if anything.
j.howlett @ Jan 7th 2009 2:02PM
they put out a game with sentient mushrooms on a nintendo console and implied they may have been copied? i've had dreams and thoughts of shrinking down in size while being in a garden since alice in wonderland. i watched the fantastic voyage and smurfs as a kid. the timing could be suspect but the idea isn't close enough
Muffonious @ Jan 7th 2009 5:08PM
Yeah, I heard about this. I also heard Mushroom Men was pretty bad. HOWEVER, I own it and have only played about an hour so far, which is hardly enough time to make an informed decision. I think both this and Deadly Creatures have potential to be good. Let's see, though.
As for the claim that Deadly Creatures was ripped from Mushroom Men...um...get over yourself? Deadly Creatures will probably be better.
rodjoh @ Jan 7th 2009 5:47PM
All these new games that are supposedly great... I mean fine, it sucks that they aren't selling. But instead of complaining about it, you should try harder. Do you really think the same person that buys Wii Fit is the same person that would buy something called Mushroom Men?
They really have to try harder with their new IPs if they want to be successful. Advertise to the right people at the right time. Get out there. Do Something!
