Top 5: Resolutions for Nintendo
After being MIA last week, it's nice to be back. I hope you were able to get your fill of inflammatory statements and grammatical errors from another blogger. And most importantly, I'm glad you're back.
While I was away with loved ones, I did like many other of my countrymen and did not hold back on food and drink. Though I try to watch what I eat, the lure of freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies and egg nog were a siren's song I could not ignore. And when I make my way to the gym tonight for my semi-daily swim, I know that it will be infested with the dreaded "January Joiners." This is a term which refers to the large influx of people attending the gym in the early part of the year in a futile attempt to fulfill their weight-loss resolutions. Although maneuvering around the larger number of bodies is an inconvenience, I have no ill feelings towards this people. In fact, I wish that they'd stay all year. Sadly, I know better: they'll be gone before February.
So if you've made resolutions, try your best to stick with them. Whether fitness-related or not, setting goals is a great way to improve our lives. Write notes on a calendar, set Google alerts to remind you of goals, and keep your eye on the prize. While your resolutions will best be decided by yourself, we can all agree on a few for Nintendo. Here's the Top 5 resolutions that the Big N should set for themselves. Unlike the January Joiners, let's hope these goals aren't abandoned by Valentine's Day.

I'll tell you what, Danny . . . it IS Danny, isn't it? I'm betting that Wii Sports Resort will be BETTER than the original.
Sword-play (is that hyphenated?) . . . frisbee dogs . . . jetskis . . . I'm banking on a downright hootenanny!!!

That's quite a bold statement, nameless wonder! Wii Sports may not be a Game of the Year, but it's undoubtedly the favorite activity of every non-gamer I know. I can go for a few rounds of Wii bowling at almost any moment.
Who knows, maybe Resort will be worthy. I sure hope it is.

Didn't that Kid Icarus rumor say that it was being developed by Factor 5? Who may or may not be closing their doors soon?
Orion @ Jan 5th 2009 12:06PM
I don't think they're closing their doors, they just fired about half the staff and said something like they were focusing on only one title instead of several. I hope that one title is Kid Icarus.
I just want something to play. I now have a 360 and a PS3, and the Wii hasn't been turned on since Mario Kart came out. I love Nintendo, and they're my favorite company of the three.. but please... games!
PS: Wii Fit and Wii Music are experiences not games.
Jay Brooks @ Jan 5th 2009 11:57AM
let's hope they read this and act on it. they could really hit the ball out of the park with these ideas. i just hope money doesn't blind them.
Davo @ Jan 5th 2009 12:36PM
The online services have a lot of things to improve. I hope the storage solution will be a System Update and not an expensive external hard drive (the Wii is cheap but the real expense comes with the peripherals).
And I just hope Wii Sports Resort won't be Nintendo's big hit for 2009. Give us a real game!!!!!
PS: Wii Music is not an experience, it's a toy (Miyamoto's words).
Kaes Delgrego @ Jan 7th 2009 6:35PM
True, Davo. The term "game" is used pretty loosely to describe just about anything you can run on a gaming console. We may need to agree upon a new word soon!

Sorry, but Twilight Princess is a port from GameCube. I tremendous, wonderful game, but a port.
So we can't say that Nintendo has given us a Zelda game for the Wii yet, and I am very unhappy about having no real news other than the vague "couple of years".
Antonio @ Jan 5th 2009 3:04PM
Good point. So is Super Paper Mario and Mario Party 8. It's time for developed-for-the-Wii-from-the-ground-up games. Except for Super Mario Galaxy and maybe MP3, most of these games look like they're running on modified Gamecube engines. And it's clear that some also tacked on Wii controls (like Super Paper Mario and Mario Party 8).

I really want WiiMotion PLUS to be a huge thing.
I want 3rd parties to use it and games later in 09 to be required to use it.
WiiSports Resort will sell probably 10 million copies in 2009 Worldwide. That means millions of people will have access to WiiMotion plus so I really hope that vast majority of late 2009 games use it. I'm a hardcore gamer and I'm buying WiiSports Resort for that tech and I want and expect that major 3rd party and 1st party games use it.
i will be furious if Jan 2010 comes and only 10 Wii games use it.
Roto13 @ Jan 5th 2009 2:17PM
I think Iwata already said he wants the Motion Plus to be really wide-spread and he wants to sell them on their own for as cheap as possible. It makes sense, since the more people who have Motion Pluses, the more game developers will develop games around it, which means better/higher selling Wii games.
Ghaleon @ Jan 5th 2009 2:14PM
Anyone who can't see that WiiSports is a great piece of software is not a hardcore gamer. Everytime ANYone uses that word, I feel like Inigo Montoya: "You keep using dat word. I do na think it means what you think it means."
Kaes Delgrego @ Jan 7th 2009 6:37PM
+10 points for The Princess Bride reference. :)
Roto13 @ Jan 5th 2009 2:15PM
"In other words, I'm under the impression that the solution for this problem is more of along the lines of "Hey, Wii Hardware: You know that thing we told you not to do? You can go ahead and do it." If this is true, I'm left to wonder why this wasn't enabled in a more timely manner through a recent system update."

I've got a resolution for Nintendo: 1920x1080

You currently hold the Zing of 2009 torch. :)

I'd really like to see a "Paper Luigi: Plight of the Waffle Kingdom". I loved Paper Mario 1 & 2, and I think Luigi needs to have some time in the home-console-RPG limelight.
