It's-a Mario World: Classic Secrets

Along with the New Year's celebration comes a heap of (potentially unrealistic) personal resolutions for the future and an equal dose of nostalgic recollection of 2008. You have already seen our 10 Best Games of 2008 and the 10 you should have downloaded among dozens of other annual lists, so your sense of hindsight should be fairly well-attuned during this first weekend of 2009. So where, you might ask, does our Mario fit in?
This week we are highlighting some classic Mario game secrets which did not necessarily occur in 2008, but which should nevertheless be recalled during all possible occasions if only to reaffirm our steadfast allegiance. These recollections are like wormholes to our early platforming pasts, histories in which the surprising discovery of a well-hidden 1-up or warp zone could redefine the realm of the possible in the Land of the Mushrooms. Yeah, and they are also reminders of what we were doing earlier today. Now, we are no soothsayers, but it's a good bet that 2009 will be full of more coin-hoarding, cape-rippling good times. For now, though, let's look back at some of the top secret areas of early Mario games. Warp to the gallery!

Super Mario Bros. 3 had some messed up secrets. xP
ZombiePikmin @ Jan 4th 2009 3:01PM
XD I found every single one of those. And at least half without someone telling me they existed.
Kenneth Caldwell @ Jan 4th 2009 3:14PM
Well then you're in good company, my friend. ;-)

I am surprised I have never heard of the White Toad Houses. I randomly came across the Ghost Ship a number of times, but not the toad house. What does it do?
What is the secret behind the lake in Super Mario World? It seems like I was there, but I don't remember anything special about it. I found all of the exits on the red-dot-areas, so I must have been there. Or am I missing something?
KeegdnaB @ Jan 4th 2009 3:25PM
You get to Soda lake from the one bridge level where you have to fly under or really far over the normal exit to reach the secret exit. I have never been able to get to it with mario alone, however its pretty easy with luigi or a blue yoshi.
Mr Khan @ Jan 4th 2009 3:52PM
Yeah, i had to be told how to get there, as i scoured that level up and down for some sort of way out. Fiendish, really, to hide it behind the goal
Kenneth Caldwell @ Jan 5th 2009 9:47AM
NEVER HEARD OF WHITE TOAD HOUSES?! ACKKK!
Sorry. You, dear reader, have some catching up to do. :-)
Matias @ Jan 4th 2009 3:40PM
No world -1?? Well, it's more of a glitch than a real programmed secret though.
Also the third whistle on world 2 in Mario 3, you have to break a rock using the hammer on the right side of the map.
Oh, and in mario world after you beat every stage the world map and some enemies change (In a very funny way).
What I find weird is that I always got the money ship on mario 3, but never intentionally. And never got the white mushroom
Shadow31 @ Jan 4th 2009 4:24PM
All you have to do is beat the special world in Super Mario World to make the enemies change. That's usually the first thing I do and then I play the rest of the game with the changed enemies.
Metayoshi @ Jan 4th 2009 4:01PM
I can't believe the Minus World didn't make the list. Also, the Special World in Super Mario World doesn't require that you beat all of Star Road. In fact, all you had to do was find the key in the bottom-most-level in Star Road, Star Road 5 if memory serves correctly. It should be easy if you have a Blue Yoshi and haven't activated that many colored block switches yet. Sure, you can argue that you can beat Star Road's 1-4 to get to Star Road 5, but you can also just go to Star Road 5 through Valley of Bowser, effectively skipping the rest of Star Road.
Suichimo @ Jan 4th 2009 7:10PM
If I remember correctly, you had to find the secret exit for all stages in Star Road in order to access Special World.
Can't believe Yoshi in 64 wasn't mentioned, nor any of the secret stages. In the same vein you have Luigi in Galaxy.
CJC @ Jan 4th 2009 5:13PM
I liked the hidden areas in Yoshi's Island with the little notes from the developers. Those always put a smile on my face.

I remember accidentally finding a true gem while playing Super Mario Bros. on the NES. What I am speaking of is the ability to be small with firepower.
To do it, you had to enter Bowser's castle and meet him as big Mario without a Fire Flower. Next, get behind Bowser and wait for him to catch up to you. You need to hit the switch (axe? - I've never been sure) and Bowser at the same time. You know you've done it correctly when Mario flashes but doesn't visually shrink back to normal size. The next "?" block you find that contains a powerup will contain a mushroom that shrinks you. All you have to do next is find a Fire Flower and you'll be small with the ability to shoot fireballs.
I'm not really sure if this is more of a glitch than a secret - but all members of the Mario Master Society know about this already.

Even though warp zone has warps to world 2-4, never choose 4. Four does not have a warp zone, but an annoying water level instead.
I baught all those on VC.

Actually level 4-2 does have a warp zone. Look more carefully next time.
MarkShark @ Jan 4th 2009 11:51PM
The colors in your SMW screenshots perplex me.
Suichimo @ Jan 5th 2009 11:28AM
If you complete Special World and take the star at the end of it you will give a palette swap to Mushroom Kingdom. Colors will change and most enemies will get different appearances.
MarkShark @ Jan 5th 2009 1:38PM
I could have sworn I did that before, but I guess not.
MarkShark @ Jan 5th 2009 2:20PM
By complete, does that include getting the Yoshi coins for all stages?
Or does the palette change just not happen in the GBA version?
Suichimo @ Jan 5th 2009 9:25PM
Hm... maybe the palette change comes with finding all 96 exits. I could've sword it came with finishing Special World but that could be it as well.
Anti-Villian @ Jan 5th 2009 3:53AM
Posts like this just remind me of how noob I am, of all those secrets, I know two, The warp tubes on level 2 and the life on level one. v.v :P
Ham @ Jan 5th 2009 4:09AM
Torpedo Teds were also in Super Princess Peach weren't they?
Boy, do I love Torpedo Teds.
soviet chick @ Jan 5th 2009 4:33AM
I was always perplexed as to who Torpedo Ted was and why the hell he appeared before the closing credits of SMW. Didn't find out until the GBA version (Mario Advance 2) with its extremely useful status menu that allowed me to finally conquer all 96 exits.
The secret 1-up Mushroom block, the level 1-2 and 4-2 warp areas, and the warp whistles in world 1 are all second nature to us all (at least my brothers, all the old neighborhood kids, and I). They were all mandatory grabs. I went most of my SMB3 playing life not knowing what waited for Mario at the end of Fortress 1 or even playing past the first level in world 2.
Fun list :D
Kenneth Caldwell @ Jan 5th 2009 9:52AM
Yeah, Torepedo Ted was a mystery to me at first, too. I'm actually just now playing the Super Mario Advance games on GBA for the first time, and I love them. The interface in general is just much better, and besides being able to save anywhere on the world map, the extra content like the added Advance coins in SMB2 is great.
Beaker Bongload @ Jan 5th 2009 4:38PM
I'm glad at least one of you mentioned the "Small fire flower" glitch/secret. I was beginning to think I had imagined that all those years ago because no one I know has ever done it except me!
There are several secrets I feel personally that trump the ones listed in this weeks post. First and foremost the SMB 1-3 infinite 1up trick(Totally more bad ass than the puny hidden 1up on 1-1). Just don't get too many otherwise it is an instant death sentence.
The "Breathless Bowser" secret in SMB3 where bowser doesn't shoot fireballs.
In SMB3 after you get the first 2 warp whistles and get to world 2 use the first WW and then use the second after you get to the warp zone and it takes you to world 8 directly.
Not as good but also worth mentioning: If you beat an airship in smb3 with tanooki, hammer mario or frog mario you get a different message from the king. The SMB3 world 3-9 infinite 1ups.
Also, the only time I can think of there being an actual debug menu or real "cheat" in a "mario" game is in Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land you can get the debug menu by doign the following:
Pause the game, then press Select 16 times. A box will appear over lives, time, or coins. To use Debug Mode, hold A or B and press Left or Right to move the box over a number. To change the number, press Up or Down.
You can also change Wario's hat by pressing A + B to move the box to Wario. Once it's there, press Start. Each time you do, Wario's hat will change.

It's been almost a month with no new "It's-a Mario World." Is it time to start freaking out?
