Wii clinches bronze in console usage stakes
The white coats at Nielsen have been at it again, analysing our gaming lives and charting the consoles we use most. Unlike the Nielsen study we posted about previously, this one takes into account pre-Wii/PS3/Xbox 360 platforms. This means that the PS2 stormed to a predictable, convincing victory: 30.2% of "all measured console minutes" were dedicated to Sony's nine-year-old machine.
Despite its smaller user base, the Xbox 360 was second with 18.3%, while the Wii came third with 13.5% -- high enough, we feel, to put any no-doubt-hilarious Wii/dust jokes to rest. Excellently, the GameCube is following the PS3 more closely than you'd think.
A quick disclaimer before you scuttle past the break to see the data in full: these numbers cover January to October 2008, there's no word on whether non-U.S. gamers were surveyed, and handhelds aren't mentioned, though are presumably bracketed in the "Others" category. Multiple console owners who are richer than us: how closely do your own habits follow this pattern?
- PlayStation 2 (30.2%)
- Xbox 360 (18.3%)
- Wii (13.5%)
- Xbox (9.1%)
- PlayStation 3 (7.7%)
- GameCube (4.4%)
- Other (16.9%)

My usage goes thusly:
PS3 (almost daily)
PC (four or five hours of CoD5 per week)
Wii (maybe once a month)
PS2 (when I feel like play Guitar Hero)
Looks like I'm on the wrong site these days, eh? :P

I only play 360 and wii now. Ps2 is out of my life forever, while i may go back to play some gamecube games.

My Wii is gathering dust solely because I commute a lot and DS' SRPGs keeps me busy.
Also, unexpectedly, gaming before TV doesn't really bode with me well (and I'm not a TV watching person). Beside WiiSports & Zelda, no other game made me willing to sit/stand before TV. But overall my experiment trying out gaming on consoles has paid off.

My time looks more like:
1. 360 to play games
2. PS3 to see if Home ever improves
3. Wii to weigh myself... which is pretty sad...

I use the PS3 alot, as the DVD player during the day and games nightly,
The Wii only for a quick game or 2 of Battalion Wars 2.

I'm running out of Wii motivation anymore actually. I spend most of my time on PC games. Once I get a ps3 I'll have to see if it changes any.
I haven't found any games on the Wii that I haven't gotten bored with (even if they're great games). Super smash bro lost it's luster with mediocre online play (lag, horrible system for friend battles). MarioKart was fun until I became really good at it. All the other games I have are adventure game that I beat. Meanwhile I still play Spore and Neverwinter Nights all the time, and I havent gotten extroadinarily bored yet.

I only use Virtual Boy!

I actually play my Wii the most out of any of my consoles, including the 360. I suppose I'm not doing something correctly? :P
For me, it goes thusly:
Wii gets turned on for whatever I'm playing through (currently Wario Land and the old Castlevanias) or Brawl when friends are around
360 for watching DVDs or when a friend wants to play me on Live (the big white box should get some more love when I pick up CoD)
PS2 for Persona 3 (once I beat it the dusty old thing might get to retire...until I feel like playing it again)
And DS in-between. I really don't understand all the complaining about the Wii's library. I, for one, can't stop playing it.

Being the only console kinda helps it monopolize my time. It does compete with the DS, but i'm a console gamer at heart. Right now i'm on the DS more, with Sonic Chronicles and all, but Wii will soar back with 2009
PhoenixGeek @ Jan 2nd 2009 3:08PM
Lately it's been daily Wii usage between me and my wife since Animal Crossing came out. When Steam had it's sale I picked up Fallout 3 and now the time is split between the PC and World of Goo on the Wii.
John @ Jan 2nd 2009 3:18PM
PS3 is on daily...
I got a small BluRay collection over Christmas to watch, I use it to play DVDs and the media playback to watch XVid TV/movies stored on the computer elsewhere.
There are a couple games that keep me coming back (PixelJunk series, LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet and Clank, and Buzz TV for parties)
Wii is rarely turned on. Just doesn't seem to be much replayability for me.
Probably a 95% PS3, 5% Wii split over a given month.
Melao @ Jan 4th 2009 11:59AM
1 - DS
2 - Wii
3 - PC
I only have this 3 gaming platforms. I would play the PC more than he Wii, if I had one good enough to play the most recent games.
What really shocked me, is that I am playing a hell lot of DS. I bought the DS in 2006, and initially I didn't use it so much. But suddenly in 2008 the DS became my favorite platform.
The reason I don't play the Wii so much is that the system is hooked up to the TV, and so I have to "negotiate" with my wife.
rodjoh @ Jan 4th 2009 1:31PM
Well I only have a Wii and I like it that way... there arent much games Id want from the PS3... probably Soul Calibur, Little Big Planet and Guitar Hero/Rock Band which I already own on Wii... but other than that Wii has all the gaming I need for my style.
Nightwish @ Jan 4th 2009 7:44PM
Those are even less believable then TV ratings.
DirtySocks85 @ Jan 9th 2009 10:26AM
1. Wii
2. Xbox (although as of late the disc drive has been making noises that concerns me a bit =( )
3. PS2 (mostly Guitar Hero and Kingdom Hearts)
4. PC/Mac
5. Genesis
I used to get a bit of use out of my N64 but it belonged to me and my brother growing up and he's in possession of it at the moment. I may see about getting that back.
