DS Daily: Accidents

Today we're wondering about some of the more horrible things that could've happened to your DS. We've been known to drop ours every now and then, and we were the unfortunate recipients of some scratches on the touch-screen after we let our little cousin play with it a bit. How about you? Have you let a relative play your DS, only to find it scratched every which way? Have you dropped it down a flight of stairs or on the street? What's the worst thing that's happened to your DS*?

I have bent all the connectors in slot 1 after having a piece of paper together with the game.
elsng @ Dec 23rd 2008 9:36AM
I managed to drop my Lite and noticed that after that, the volume slider was stuck. I dropped it again some time after, and the volume slider started working again!
Nutmeg @ Dec 24th 2008 8:53PM
ACK! the same thing happened to me--- the volume slider is stuuuuck. Hopefully it fixes itself like yours did! Thanks so much for posting, no one else on the net seems to recognize my problem as something that could happen >___>
Sam @ Dec 25th 2008 1:51PM
Whoa. Wtf. The SAME exact thing is happening to me too. I dropped mine the other day onto a hard-tile floor, and there was NO damage whatsoever, other than the jammed volume switch. Hrmm. I guess I'll just have to drop it again...
Sam @ Dec 27th 2008 12:52PM
lolwut.
I actually got the volume slider working. I only had to drop/throw it on the floor like a bajillion times.
Although, I think I died a little inside every time I did. :/
esporenthead @ Dec 23rd 2008 9:48AM
my ds lite has a dead pixel
nintendo.luigi @ Dec 23rd 2008 10:08AM

The horror...THE HORROR!!!
That picture should have been behind a cut. *sob*
wiinterfang @ Dec 23rd 2008 10:29AM
I almost cry seen that pictures. anyway I've lost my two stylus :(.
Rono @ Dec 23rd 2008 9:16PM
My DS Lite touch screen is all scratched, nothing compared to how my DS Phat is now. Only the bottom screen works, its almost broken in half, and also is scratched in both the screen. It's horrible.
PestName @ Dec 23rd 2008 10:48AM
Nothing has ever happened to my persnoal white lite, I have it in one of those protection bags you don't have to take off while playing and also looks great when closed.
Santos L. Halper @ Dec 23rd 2008 10:52AM
My mom was going to visit my brother in the hospital a few years ago and she said he wanted the DS. So I gave it to her to give to him but being the dumb fuck that she is, she just tossed it in her bag and piled a bunch of cheap ass Christian books that she won from a radio station and other shit on to the $130 device. When I got the DS back, it had little scratches and dents all over the top part. As someone who goes out of his way to take care of the things he owns (especially video game related) this was fuckin annoying. If she wasn't going to give a shit about taking care of something I own, she should've at least considered that it was expensive and shouldn't be treated like a fuckin candy wrapper.
dswill79 @ Dec 23rd 2008 12:42PM
Sounds like somebody's got mommy issues...in the grand scheme of things, at least your mother is still alive. Mine passed away 2 years ago...count your blessings...
BlackDS @ Dec 23rd 2008 4:53PM
If you really cared that much about the appearance of your DS Lite, you should have spent $10 on a quality case.
Stop blaming your mom ... it's partly your fault.
Peace.
iaaapsmo @ Dec 23rd 2008 11:05AM
I was playing DS in bed one night, and went to put it on the shelf. Apparently, I was so tired that I completely missed the shelf and my DS fell 6' to the ground from my lofted bed. >_< Got a replacement via warranty, but had to buy a new r4.
Roto13 @ Dec 23rd 2008 11:07AM
I accidentally bodyslammed my Phat against a door that was frozen shut. It completely destroyed the top screen. (Crazily enough, the outside of the DS was fine.)
And that is the story of how I got my DS Lite. Abridged.
kaion @ Dec 23rd 2008 11:48AM
2 ds phats got cracked hinges one of them the ribbon cable to the top screen tore. just need to buy a new cable and all will be right agian
Qwikstreet @ Dec 23rd 2008 12:42PM
My 4 yr old dropped it off the couch onto the hardwood floor while it was open.. Luckily it is still with me and no physical damage.
soundpaint @ Dec 23rd 2008 12:52PM
Agh, that picture.
I broke my L and R buttons. ._.
dangdong @ Dec 24th 2008 9:38AM
I accidentally dropped my best friend's phat out in the gravely parking lot and it fell open. Miraculously, it still worked fine and we couldn't really find any scratches. There was one that maybe happened from it, but it was so light and we weren't sure that it wasn't already there. My hands were just so full... :(
Red Confession @ Dec 23rd 2008 1:15PM
I was enjoying my phat, happy to not need to upgrade to a lite (if it's working, don't fix it). Then one day I just open my DS, which I keep in a leather carrying case when I'm not using it, and there's a small crack on the hinge. Well, long story short it became a bigger crack, then it became two cracks... Now I have to push the screen back down every time I open it so it will remotely stay in place.
Hopefully I get lite for Christmas like I asked for.
Luxrayz @ Jan 29th 2009 7:39AM
My story exactly. The hinge on the right, the smaller one, in partly broken on my Blue Phat. Plus, when I couldn't find my stylus, I stupidly used a, er, "sharper" tool than necessary and it made a slash on the touch screen, about an inch long. There a few dead/miscolored pixels on the top screen, too. Before all of these mishaps, though, my Phat developed miscolorings on the ENTIRE DS. It got fixed, and while the reasons for the miscolorings are unknown, I suspect it had something to do with when I let my mom hold it in her purse, nestled near a cup of juice for my little brother. You get the idea.
Because of all of the above, I've decided to ask for one of those Limited Edition Pokemon DSes for Christmas. But after reading some of these stories, I feel lucky. >_
blarney @ Dec 23rd 2008 1:16PM
that picture is what my ds lite looks like right now. i super glued it back together but it breaks apart a couple of weeks later. been doing that for like a year now. still works!
WhatIsThatThing @ Dec 23rd 2008 3:19PM
That happened to mine too! Mine's still on the first supergluing though. Does your top screen go white unless it's pushed back as well?
Rock @ Dec 23rd 2008 1:20PM
On my DS PHAT, the left shoulder button stopped working. Had to replace the button and it is now working just fine.
My DS Lite and my wife's DS Lite were stolen back in October. This is the first time I have been without a Nintendo brand handheld game system since 1991. This has been a really sucky fall.
MarkShark @ Dec 23rd 2008 1:20PM
My DSs seem to be highly susceptible to falling, which can make them die when combined with my extreme gaming and ability to kill small technology like microSD without doing anything to them.
My current one has been doing great and is still healthy, and I've had it much longer than my first one, but I bought a replacement policy thing with it just in case.
S3ph @ Dec 23rd 2008 1:32PM
My friend came over once and I took out my DSlite, we played it for some time. After he left, I went to put it back and noticed a huge, deep scratch on the lid. I first went to my little sister and started shouting like crazy. I couldn't say for sure my friend did it, because I was in front of him the whole time, but even if he did, I'm sure it wasn't on purpose or anything. And once I was in my car and it fell from my lap to the ground when I reached for the door. No visible damage though :)
goog9 @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:49PM
this one time i sat on my ds phat and it went right up my bum. it still works great though!
pecavuk @ Dec 24th 2008 2:13AM
Strange as it seems i still haven't dropped my DS,yet.I did lose three styluses though...those things are small...
Splash @ Dec 23rd 2008 4:01PM
My DS lite has a dead pixel right around the middle and the hinge has broken off like shown in the picture >_>; I managed to glue it back together and it's still working, but it isn't completely straight anymore. Gotta love the cheap hardware -.-
HotLimit @ Dec 23rd 2008 9:18PM
I used to toss my DS on my bed when I'm done with it, and it always bounced dramatically before flying off the bed and hitting the floor. They need to make the thing less agile.
Reuben @ Dec 24th 2008 1:35PM
I find all my electronics are just as agile. My cell phone, my DS, my PSP...
You'd think I'd learn after the first toss, but the lesson hasn't quite stuck yet.
im bob @ Jan 1st 2009 11:44AM
I know what u mean. Mine does backflips onto my desk
odan @ Dec 24th 2008 10:17PM
I had two DS lites have the hinge break, apparently there a defect with some of the older Lites and the hinge , i didn't know that when i got them.
Nintendo wanted 75 bucks to replace the broken hinge, figured i could get a new case and replace.. bad idea on my part, i have no patience , and accidently broken another piece while changing cases , ended up with the second have the hinge crack , traded in for a PSP , been happy even since. Will buy a brand new ds lite eventually.
paulv @ Dec 23rd 2008 5:07PM
I was showing some friends DSLinux. One of them said something like "Oh, Nintendo builds these things for little kids, they're pretty tough" and threw it across the room to someone else. The guy he threw it to wasn't expecting it and dropped it. The screen was kind of wonky and the hinge cracked. The thrower felt bad, so I traded him the broken one for $130 in cash (which I used to buy a replacement, of course).
chibi_wings @ Dec 23rd 2008 5:24PM
worst that has happened to my DS was it falling from my lap onto ceramic flooring when open. Thankfully, it didn't fall from too high up and was perfectly fine. The second time I pushed it by accident off my desk and it feel on hardwood flooring. This time the fall was from higher up and it got scratched, but it still functions fine.
I try to take care of my electronics, so for a two year old lite, it's still in pretty good shape.
Zengor @ Dec 24th 2008 5:44PM
I dropped it in the street while leaving my dad's car.
Other: Lost my substtute Stylus by leaving it in the box, which was thrown to the garbage e the next day
aj @ Dec 23rd 2008 6:06PM
Most of my anecdotes about almost completely destroying my DS involve alcohol.
So kids: don't drink and game.
Even if Final Fantasy is actually more fun when you're wasted and your friends are shouting out commands over your shoulder.
Ranz @ Dec 23rd 2008 6:59PM
my ds lite went thumbling down our stairs ( about 15 steps) but still it survived! It WAS still working.. but months later it was accidentally put in the wash and unfortunately it didn't work. =C *sob* Crimson Black!
But last Saturday I got a new one as a gift! Silver!
Now I am really taking care of it.
Beaker Bongload @ Dec 23rd 2008 7:41PM
Phat has a hinge problem. 2nd case in a row with a broken hinge, its ok though. It still works
Olicon @ Dec 23rd 2008 9:42PM
Worst thing to happen to my DS..
Well..downloading and playing pirated games, then keeping it without buying the legit software, I suppose.
Luckily no such incidents have happened so far. My only regret is that the only way I could try them is through downloading them... WHY DON'T THE DAMN SHOPS JUST STOCK UP ON THE GOOD GAMES!
MiharuChan @ Dec 23rd 2008 10:12PM
The worst thing that happened to my DSlite was when I let my 1 year old son run around with it. It was closed and I figured he couldn't do too much to harm it. Turns out that baby drool isn't very healthy for electronic devices. He chewed on the case and his drool seeped into the DS and shorted out the whole thing. So, no DS for me anymore... hopefully I'll get a new one for Christmas? :D
Gastrodon @ Dec 24th 2008 7:50PM
Afraid of such family incidents, I have enforced a strict gamers-only doctrine in order to keep my DS safe. That being said, I have very little wear on mine.
molecule @ Dec 24th 2008 12:46AM
the only problem i've had with my ds is that the L button stopped working. i never bothered to check if there was a solution for it until a couple weeks ago, and i found out that all you have to do is blow around the button like you would blow into a game cart to get the dust out. i went almost a year thinking it was totally broken.
Jamar @ Dec 24th 2008 2:18AM
That picture is exactly what happened to my DS Lite. Repeated attempts to repair it with superglue failed and it now sits in my drawer.
FantomRedux @ Dec 24th 2008 1:05PM
I'm on my 3rd DS Lite. First two were traded for new ones due to dodgy shoulder buttons, and the 2nd had a crack on the hinge. They just charged me 13 for repairs and took it out of the trade in price. Luckily, or maybe unluckily, they both "broke" around the time of a new colour release. My white one broke just before the Silvers landed in the UK, and my silver just after the summer colours landed, so I got a green one
monstergarden @ Dec 24th 2008 2:27PM
I am on my 3rd. Don't play my first, phat, anymore. Nothing is wrong with that one. My black DS lite, the 2nd one, had a crack in the hinge and the battery was no longer keeping a full charge. Then the hinge completely broke apart, screwing up the top screen, making it floppy. My 3rd one, black palkia/dialga is still good. My girlfriend's white DS lite has a different type of crack in its hinge.
Apparently the DS lites weren't made to play hundreds of hours on. The phats seemed much sturdier.
im bob @ Jan 1st 2009 11:44AM
My DS Lite was acidently dropped 2 storeys from a condo and there was only a small crack on the hinge near the L button. The L button was disabled for about half an hour then came back to life.
Also plz dont put pictures like that, they're ... disturbing lol
Santos L. Halper @ Dec 24th 2008 3:39PM
An adult not being able to take care of a hand held is my fault because I didn't by a case? Thanks for the enlightenment and “peace,” douchebag. You're a typical internet hippie who tries to act all zen and superior but doesn't realize how much of a douche he sounds like. I guarantee there are people calling you a fag behind your back if not to your face.
