Who and what is the Commander?

Oh, look, it's one of those viral-marketing videos designed to build so much hype about an unknown project that thousands of people will be thrilled by whatever it turns out to be! We'll go ahead and contribute to the hype, because why not. Maybe one of you will figure something out!

IGN claims this video relates to a Wii-exclusive game coming in 2009, but really, it could be anything. It was posted on Vimeo by a user named CommanderVideo with no history at all, and it's also available on a website, commandervideo.com, whose WHOIS information is masked.

As for the video itself, we see a grid sequence made to look sort of like an arcade game startup screen, and what looks like several seconds of an abstract top-down shooter. And a bunch of nonsense. But hey, we like abstract shooters!

To whom is interested, a translation into English:

"Did the master explain it to you?"
"No, should I know something?"
-not understandable-... "give it to me."

Can't understand that voice, when they're crying. Seems to say something like "All...." or "Hello..."

Looks like people picking up a broadcast back to the earth of a combination of the Pioneer 10 Plaque, the Voyager Golden Record, and the Image of the Vitruvian Man. All of these things would be the first thing (tangible) extra-terrestrials would get from us besides radio/tv broadcasts we've been pouring into space since the mid 1930s.

A message back? Doesn't seem to happy. In fact, it reminds me of all the concern that people had before they sent the Pioneer Plaque and the Golden Record, for fear that they would lead hostile aliens here that would then eradicate us.

Or like 95% of people speculating about viral material, I'm just seeing what I want to see.

From some IntelliVoice-compatible game for the Intellivision(s). Haven't played it m'self (I think), but it's used in a track or two of a CD release from the Blue Sky Rangers (or, at the least, sold by them at IntellivisionLives.com; seems they've got a DS compilation greenlit, too).
