X-Play's The Conduit footage, without having to watch G4 [update]
[Update: YouTube has pulled the video.]
If you don't spend your whole day watching G4TV -- perhaps because you don't like watching reruns of Heroes with big chat windows covering half the screen -- you probably missed X-Play's exclusive preview of The Conduit. Luckily, some dude with a YouTube account did not! The segment features a bit of introduction to the story (something about government secret agent), as well as Sega's Josh Morton extolling, and demonstrating, the first-person shooter's Wii controls.
Most important, though, is the fact that X-Play's segment is composed almost entirely of gameplay footage, which is vaguely ironic. Why is it that most game trailers do their best to avoid long shots of actual in-game footage, and yet a non-publisher-produced TV show is loaded with it?

Looking good! Keep that hype machine rolling, I'm suped.
Matias @ Dec 18th 2008 4:50PM
Looks amazing, I'll probably buy it as soon as it comes out (though after reading the release list yesterday, that may change).
What I don't like is how they identify hardcore gamers with FPS and good graphics, well, at least I heard the word gameplay there.
Mr Khan @ Dec 18th 2008 4:53PM
I liked what i saw, though it was nothing particularly new or compelling.
When are they going to tout out shots of the multiplayer?
Hardy @ Dec 18th 2008 4:55PM
I'm actually incredibly impressed by Segas constant pushing for hardcore games on the Wii, considering Nintendo is being pretty pathetic about that segment of games.
This isn't their game but they see the potential.
Go Sega!
CJLopez @ Dec 18th 2008 5:30PM
Nintendo hasn't forgotten the hardcore.
We already got brawl and mario kart, also metroid prime 3, zelda twilight princess, but, ok, that one also is in gamecube, so what, we are getting another zelda fro wii, also mario galaxy, and we are getting punch out, sin and punishment.
We have recieved many games on the Wii that are hardcore, but, if for hardcore, you mean, bloody action packed nonsense violence bullet firing FPS (aka Gears of War) then ok, we hadn't recieved that many from Nintendo (Actually, only Metroid Prime 3 enters there, taking away the bloody part)
I'm a hardcore gamer, but my definition of hardcore if of play the new iterations of games that you played in the past and test new games and ways to play games, have a wide open mind and point the good and bad of the games you play. And most of all, have fun!!!!!
I'm also a Wiifanboy, but I can also state that Wii has pretty cheap crap games. I can point the good and bad thing of the stuff, not like some people who only can point at the bad cuz their a bunch of jackasses fanboys with the mind of a 12yo kid
Sora @ Dec 18th 2008 6:39PM
That's a fraction of the "hardcore" games the other consoles have (and even past Ninty consoles), and Mario Kart isn't really that "hardcore" anymore, any decent Smash player will tell you that Melee > Brawl, and Mario Galaxy, while an improvement to Sunshine, still pales in comparison to Mario 64. So yes, Nintendo's been paling in their "hardcore" offerings.
TwEE @ Dec 19th 2008 2:06AM
Sora thats a nice OPINION you have there..
Edge @ Dec 18th 2008 4:55PM
Let's be honest, it might play alright. But it looks like absolute shit.
CJLopez @ Dec 18th 2008 5:32PM
And here we are, demoting this guy cuz we can't take his comment for bashing one of the game we think is pretty awesome
Its his own oppinion, based on that he is a kid who only say "Gears of War looks better than this"
Ok, he is a fanboy, and a stupid one, prooving my answer to Hardy, but we are also stupid, cuz we are prooving we care what a biassed opinion does get to us
canaroo @ Dec 18th 2008 5:18PM
Well, there we go. This is the reason why I have both a 360 and a Wii. The exclusivity of it all. There are games on the Wii that just "play" better than on any other console. Note I said "play" and not really (at least not all the times) "look" better.
For instance, take Sean White. Much rather play that on the Wii than any other system. It just "plays" better. Or, Okami. Another game that just "plays" better because of the unique control scheme.
My hope is that the Conduit plays better than it would on something like the 360. We already know that it really can't, technically, look better. But, in the same respect, we sure as hell know that a game can play better on the Wii.
That is my hope. And that is why I look forward to purchasing this game. Period.
CJLopez @ Dec 18th 2008 5:34PM
Man, thanks, you prove my POW!!!!
I can concur with you, but I got myself a PS3. I'm also a sonny fanboy and M$ hater, still, if there are enough exclusives i might buy a 360 also in the futurte (there are alredy 18 exclusives, 2 more and i'm getting the 360, :P)
esposch @ Dec 18th 2008 8:27PM
Almost every decent 360 game comes out on PC. You're better off spending 1/3 of the price of a 360 on an upgrading and enjoying free online. And free DLC. And Mods. And better graphics. And better controls. And 12 year old squeaky voiced noobs don't go on steam.
il_duce620 @ Dec 18th 2008 5:25PM
Day one purchase. Still.
CJLopez @ Dec 18th 2008 5:34PM
second!!!
iconmaster @ Dec 18th 2008 5:45PM
Still waiting to be impressed by this game.
Ferco @ Dec 18th 2008 5:54PM
Am I the only one who thought that the guy didn't know what he was talking about. If he's a producer at sega, how could he be involved in the decision to make a great looking game on the wii?
water.and.sand @ Dec 19th 2008 1:26AM
You're pretty much right on.
Sega is only the producer (and they picked it up not so long ago). If he works for Sega, he most likely hasn't helped develop The Conduit at all. He's a figurehead, but hey- at least that means that one of the real creators of the game isn't taking a lot of time off in the final stretch of development to go hype it.
Mattchewie @ Dec 18th 2008 6:41PM
doesn't look bad for a wii title. I dunno if I will rush to buy this as I heard the whole "we really take advantage of the unique control" story before ...so I will at least rent quickly and play through some to deduce if it should be purchased.
mikewalsh19 @ Dec 18th 2008 7:00PM
Does this footage remind anyone else of Perfect Dark for the N64? Definitely in part the weapons, but also maybe the movement or textures or something? I don't know, but if this game can reproduce the fun of the first Perfect Dark it will be a solid addition to the Wii lineup.
CJLopez @ Dec 18th 2008 7:27PM
second it!!!
The first Time i saw this I also though its waaaaay to similar to Perfect Dark, but i don't care, I loved perfect dark, man i'm still waiting for an inyected wad or emulator to be able to play it on my Wii (cuz, lets face it, it'll never come to VC unless Rare and Nintendo work it out again) so its one of the reason i'm pretty hyped for it
mc7791 @ Dec 18th 2008 7:42PM
just around the corner? Not really. I have been waiting for a game like this for a while. Now we have to wait, and wait, and wait. I want this game but in the meantime... whoopee
Nebinator @ Dec 18th 2008 8:34PM
I sure hope there's a nice pre-order bonus!
ChromeAlchemist @ Dec 18th 2008 9:15PM
O.K. a few things that pissed me off.
1. what is a producer from SEGA doing talking about this game when Erig Norsfinger or someone else on the team knows what they are talking about and could do a better job?
2. He said this crap about hardcore gamers, but I will leave that, there's no point bitching about the little things I guess. But the 'next gen' crap? that irritated me.
3. He said 'we wanted to make a game' that has this and that, but we know for a fact that this game has been developed for about a year and a bit without SEGA, so that is bull, which brings me to
4. I like that SEGA are bringing a spate of games that the 'hardcore' would like, but I feel they are plastering their name on stuff a bit too much, or taking credit where it isnt due. I would be fine with it if I didn't see that video, but I think they are taking the reigns a bit too much.
Roberto @ Dec 18th 2008 9:44PM
Couldn't agree more Chrome. I'm all for big promotion, but sega seems to have some liberal use of 'we'.
Rocketboy @ Dec 18th 2008 10:12PM
Wii's Halo?
sn1per @ Dec 19th 2008 12:43AM
nah, halo is the most overrated series of games ever. The Conduit actually looks like a great game (gameplay/control wise, at least)
TwEE @ Dec 19th 2008 2:23AM
Halo 3 has 4 player online splitscreen, will this? Playing with people in the same room is a big deal for some people..
Rocketboy @ Dec 19th 2008 10:48AM
sn1per.. Well, Halo 1 was freakin great. It's one of the few first person shooters that kept my interest though the whole game.
Now Halo 2 just sucked.
Either way, it's still a flagship game that drives sales up.
Rocketboy @ Dec 19th 2008 10:49AM
Hey, were's my icon at?
Christian Walters @ Dec 19th 2008 12:02AM
"without having to watch G4"...damn, so so true. I remember back in 2004 or so when G4 had actual GAME shows running...NOT sitcoms and Heroes and shit. Damnit G4 was the shit back in the day! Now its just crap. 22 hours of non-game crap, then AOTS(which fuckin sucks now aswell, remeber when AOTS was about tech? NOT about celebs and stuff? Yah, its been awhile.) and 2 X-Plays...whee!!! Why is it even called G4 still? Anyone here agree?
mongoos32 @ Dec 19th 2008 11:16AM
I actually still like G4. Well, I like their stuff during Prime Time. Sure, AOTS has changed, but it's not really about celebs (Maybe it's changed in the last 3 months, but I wouldn't know since I've been studying abroad in Germany.), it's more about internet culture, games, and some tech news here and there (emphasis on some). I'm glad they took all the gaming stuff out of AOTS and added it to X-play because now X-play is the home for games on the network (which it should have been to begin with). What they really need to do is bring in a tech show, and get rid of Hurl! and the other crap they try to force feed us.
P.S. I want Screen Savers back. Long live Leo Laporte.
mongoos32 @ Dec 19th 2008 5:37AM
This looks ok, but I'd rather judge it when I play it. However, if there is one thing developers need to learn, it's that making somebody 'throw' a grenade, or 'bash' their weapon with the wii-mote never works --well, at least not effectively. It's generally quite tacky and in my opinion takes precision and control away from me. But like I said, it looks good and I'm interested in seeing how it turns out. Who knows? Maybe the wii-control will actually be terrific, though I doubt it.
ali7300 @ Dec 19th 2008 9:20AM
yea, i dont like the throwing thing either, but they said that wed be able to customize out controls. so im hopping we can take those out.
WiiiiFanboy @ Dec 19th 2008 11:34PM
This game looks great so far. I'm just worried that it wont be long enough for some reason. I'm also worried that the multiplayer wont be very good, so far we haven't seen any footage of that yet. I just hope this game has a lot of replay value.
Timerider @ Dec 19th 2008 4:02PM
The video was taken down.
Ben @ Dec 20th 2008 9:42PM
wtf is wrong with G4?, taking down the vid!
Youtube would only be spreading their content to a new audience..
They don't want new viewers? Dumb.
