Born for Wii: Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Capcom has been on a roll this generation. First we got games like Dead Rising and Lost Planet which launched strong new IPs. Then the announcements started to hit. An Okami port for the Wii. Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop. Resident Evil 5 (which, judging by its recent demo, seems to be shaping up nicely). Street Fighter 4. Mega Man 9. Granted, not all of those games are making their way to the Wii, but on the whole they represent good times for gamers. Does it really get much better than that? Maybe it does.As if the decade-in-the-making Street Fighter 4 wasn't enough to reinvigorate Capcom's fighting game base, the company decided to once again visit its vs. series with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Just launched in Japan, the new fighter already has adventurous message boarders and bloggers scrambling for imports and Twilight hacks, while the rest of us pray nightly for the miracle of resolved licensing issues and a domestic release. In the spirit of Wii gamers in the land of the rising sun playing the gorgeous Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, this week Born for Wii aims to celebrate with a look back at what may be the most legendary game in the vs. series -- Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

To be honest, I don't really want MvC3. I'd rather see Capcom expand the Vs series to other franchises, like they did with Tatsunoko. Nintendo vs Capcom, for example, would be awesome.
If there ever were to be an MvC3, it's one of the FEW games I'd prefer to have in HD, assuming it's hand drawn 2D.
In many respects, I think TvC is better than MvC ever was, in part due to the more modern tech used with it. It's 3D, but it definitely plays like it's straightup 2D. It doesn't feel 2.5D, unlike SFIV, where you never really forget it.
The only thing I don't like about TvC is the smaller roster. MvC2 spoiled me rotten!
As far as MvC2 goes, I'd certainly welcome it. I'd actually prefer it on the Wii, just for the Classic Controller support. It'd be great to play the game with a nice 2D pad. the PS controller doesn't really cut it and the 360 controller blows for 2D fighters.

The unfortunate thing about Tatsunoko is how difficult it will be to get it in the states. Crossovers with companies like Marvel work perfectly since they're US-focused. Still, the concept of expanding the series is a tantalizing thought, but I can't see it happening anytime soon unless Tatsunoko sells like hot cakes. But it's a nice fantasy!

It would have to be jointly published by Activision, or face as much licensing hell as TvC was going through.

I've got that cover etched into my soul, what a game. I must have put over 100 hours into my Dreamcast/Xbox copies. Unbalanced as hell - Cable, viper beam times forever - but so much fun.
If Capcom managed to regain the Marvel license, and if they did re-release MVsC2, I'd prefer it in HD. SSF2HD looks so good, shame Capcom didn't go for a SF Alpha or 3rd Strike remake instead. I would've jumped on that boat.
Level 5 @ Dec 18th 2008 6:03AM
Man SSF2THD is so good, I can't see why a SF fan would want to pass it up.. Yeah its SSF2T (I would had loved Hyper Anniversary myself), but the fresh coat of paint has reminded many folks just how great the game actually is.
jbrookinz @ Dec 16th 2008 12:50PM
booted up my Dreamcast alot this week to play MvC2... I NEED something like this on Wii!
Antonio @ Dec 16th 2008 1:06PM
I doubt we'll ever see a full-blown remake of MvC2. Reanimating 56 characters for HD televisions would be incredibly costly. Look at how long Super SF2 HD took. As it is most of the characters in MvC2 have sprites ripped from previous Vs. games (and Darkstalkers/SF Alpha). A port/rerelease is far more likely, hopefully with online play implemented.
As far as the game being "Born for Wii" ehhh, I dunno. Capcom vs. SNK EO might've been nice for the casual set, but watching some n00b whip out E. Honda's headbutts with no charge time is really annoying. A straight-up port shouldn't be hard though, since the game was released on the PS2 and PS2 ports are all the rage on the Wii.
Wesley Fenlon @ Dec 16th 2008 6:31PM
I sincerely hope that Capcom uses the most arcade-perfect version of MvC2 if they port it to the Wii or any other console. The last thing we need is a resash of a great game once again dragged down by a shoddy port.
jb1830 @ Dec 16th 2008 1:56PM
I don't think MvC2 should be remade for anything. It was a great game and it should stay the way it is/was. It'll be hard even for an MvC3 to outdo its predecessor (even in HD flavor).
Tatsunoko vs Capcom is a great Capcom fighting game but it is definitely lacking features even when compared to Capcom Vs SNK 2 for the Gamecube. I do appreciate Capcom's effort in bringing good fighting games to the Nintendo consoles...even if I had to import this one :\
Wesley Fenlon @ Dec 16th 2008 6:31PM
The biggest thing I want is online support. If MvC2 stayed exactly the same as it is now but let us play online, it would be one of the best multiplayer experiences on any console. So long as the netcode was solid, anyway.
jb1830 @ Dec 16th 2008 6:40PM
I agree. MvC2 with online multiplayer would be insane...and as far as the netcode goes...the lag would be just like framerate slowdown on the dreamcast when you busted out massive triple team special 100+ combos :P
Ghaleon @ Dec 16th 2008 1:56PM
Marvel is balanced at high level, that's all that matters.
Marvel will never be redrawn in HD.
tifosiotaku @ Dec 16th 2008 6:09PM
lol at fighting games with the Wii Remote. You guys sure are desperate for anything, I suppose.
Wesley Fenlon @ Dec 16th 2008 7:14PM
The point of having Marvel vs. Capcom 2 ported to the Wii (or any other current-gen console) has nothing to do with motion control. Sure, that could be tacked on to appeal to newcomers, but the goal would be to make the game easily available, or make it look better, or make it online. Having it redrawn in Tatsunoko's style would be awesome, but online-play is a more realistic expectation, and it's something the game definitely deserves.
The Classic Controller would, quite obviously, be the go-to pad for the game. I'm not advocating totally changing the way it plays to make it noob friendly.
jb1830 @ Dec 16th 2008 6:46PM
You know, they do sell this peripheral called the Classic Controller. As far as I can recall it is based on the SNES Pad, which is probable the most balanced controller ever made for console fighting games. Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom plays like a dream on it.
BTW There's nothing wrong with wiimote...I play SSBB strictly on Wiimote+'chuck and will take on anyone any day with my waggle smashes. /fanboyism

Just came back to this thread, but...
"As far as I can recall it is based on the SNES Pad, which is probable the most balanced controller ever made for console fighting games. Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom plays like a dream on it."
Someone needs to get a Saturn pad...
Tim @ Dec 17th 2008 11:06PM
Wesley, please don't tell me that your planned party would consist any three of the following four:
Cable, Sentinel, Magneto, and Storm. _>
Wesley Fenlon @ Dec 18th 2008 6:09AM
Nah. My favorite characters were typically Hayato, Captain Commando, Jin, and Iron Man. But I never played competitively, so matches with friends usually involved changing up the teams quite a bit.
Level 5 @ Dec 18th 2008 6:00AM
Am I the only one who still wants a Capcom All-Stars? I mean now that Cap has made the move to 3D visuals on a 2D field and has done it WELL (SFEX non-withstanding, lol), this would be an awesome chance to get some high flying Ariel Rave goodness out of Capcom-only characters.
Think about it, if a VS game was made visually on par with SF4, but using Capcom characters from all their franchises, they could REALLY REALLY have something here. Capcom proved with MVC2 that obscure old-school characters can still be really fun, fan favorites even (SonSon ftw!). Now might be the time.
O2L @ Jan 13th 2009 10:09AM
i think they should just take the xbox or ps2 version and put it on the wii, no need to add anything or update it, just put it on the wii
exit stencil @ Feb 4th 2009 1:55AM
If they could clean up the graphics a bit from the PS2 version I might consider stealing my sister's Wii to play this.
