Nintendo Power: Brawl, Team Ninja staff working on new TMNT fighter
Well. Here's some profoundly bizarre, slightly awesome news out of the latest issue of Nintendo Power: Ubisoft is planning a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting game. Not to go along with a movie, cartoon, or comic -- just because. This project is going to involve staff from Super Smash Bros. Brawl (maybe Game Arts people?) as well as Team Ninja expats. That's all we can confirm, given our non-possession of the magazine.
But some guy on the IGN boards (which require a login, so check the GoNintendo reproduction here) went on to (probably) summarize the article, revealing the game to be a 2.5d, four-player fighting game with online play. Hey, we like those -- especially when they feature beloved characters from our youth! Although we don't like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting games (well, the SNES one was okay, and the NES one was technically impressive). According to the IGN poster, Ubisoft is shooting for a September release. Bossa nova!

So Ubisoft finally steps up to bat: and it is awesome
Though this is all preliminary. But given the staff, it certainly won't suck at least
Ranus Studios @ Dec 11th 2008 11:39AM
That's... a weird combination.
@tomic @ Dec 11th 2008 9:08PM
The illegitimate child of Smash Brothers and DOA?
I'd play it. Should be interesting anyway.
Justin @ Dec 11th 2008 11:41AM
CHEVY NOVA?
Haohmaru @ Dec 11th 2008 12:15PM
Wait, I've got it! Frere Jacque!
ZaxCG2 @ Dec 11th 2008 11:49AM
Could this be the best Ninja Turtles game since Turtles in Time?!
Doubt it... but they should give it a shot anyways. It'd be hard to do worse than the TMNT (recent) toon series games they've made.
samfish @ Dec 11th 2008 12:07PM
Don't get excited. It's being funded by Ubisoft and it's for the Wii. That's all you need to hear in order to know that it's going to suck.
Hardy @ Dec 11th 2008 12:13PM
Cause Ubisoft only makes crappy games........... idiot.
samfish @ Dec 11th 2008 12:53PM
Yeah, they do on the Wii.
Orion @ Dec 11th 2008 1:32PM
Just because there's a Ubisoft label on it doesn't mean it will be bad. No More Heroes is a good example. TMNT will be done by a very good team, not Ubisoft's team... same can be said about No More Heroes, which was only published by them.
So while I get your point (yes yes, rayman and red steel), it having a Ubisoft label on it doesn't guarantee instant crap.
ZaxCG2 @ Dec 11th 2008 1:54PM
AHEM. No More Heroes had an Ubisoft label... One of my favorite games on the Wii.
leonus11 @ Dec 11th 2008 2:38PM
i agree with Orion on this. no more heroes was an AWESOME game and it was made by Ubisoft. it's fine if you think the game will be crap! we are all entitled to our own opinion. but as for myself i'm gonna keep my hopes up. it might turn out to be a great game but i'll keep an eye out for it.
samfish @ Dec 11th 2008 2:43PM
Ubisoft had no say over NMH. The game was nearly complete by the time they signed the publishing rights in the US. The worst part is, despite being in that position, they completely failed to advertise it.
This game, however, is being published and apparently funded by Ubisoft from top to bottom, regardless of who is making it. They are ABSOLUTELY in a position to fuck this game over by making absurd demands of the dev team...and given Ubisoft's previous stance on Wii games, there is no reason to believe they wouldn't do just that.
Go ahead, though — get hyped up over this. Don't be surprised, however, when the game is yet another atrocious piece of crapware with a Ubisoft label on the box.
tmntman @ Dec 11th 2008 12:25PM
Where do I sign up for some beta testing? I'll be willing to learn French if needed. (Ubisoft is located in France correct?)
scissors125 @ Dec 11th 2008 12:39PM
I'm more concerned at this hinting to either a new TMNT movie, or TV series
tmntman @ Dec 11th 2008 3:54PM
There is little risk of that. The powers that be at Mirage have been pretty open about future projects, and there isn't a new movie in production.

Shredder: FINAL SMASH TURTLE SOUP!
Sisyphus @ Dec 11th 2008 1:26PM
Bah, why make a fighter? Make something interesting for a change.
Matt_M @ Dec 11th 2008 1:35PM
Yeah, WTF are they thinking, they should make a TMNT music/rhythm game based on the "out of their shells" live music tour!
No, wait, "Cooking Mama" only just pizzas!
No, wait, JRPG animu teenage hero turtle kawaii!
NO! TMNT Super Sluggers!
God, fighting is such a stupid idea for ninjas to do!
Sisyphus @ Dec 11th 2008 6:26PM
It would be far more interesting as an action/adventure game as opposed to another fighter. They're always so similar, but just with different characters.
Tom @ Dec 11th 2008 2:14PM
I have limited expectations for this game, but if it plays at all like Brawl then I'd be enjoying it. The cast of Turtles is really large too so it'd be easy to have 30 characters if they were willing to create it.
That aside, I feel like it'll be 12-15 characters and star mostly the turtles. I'm just imagining Brawl with Turtle environments, that would be so awesome.
Kios @ Dec 11th 2008 2:31PM
It's about time!!! I've been waiting for someone to make another one of these. Are you crazy??? The Snes tournament fighters wasn't ok...it was awesome! Let's hope this game has some of the same mechanics as that one did.
Suda52 @ Dec 11th 2008 3:02PM
Mmmm... interesting. im not exited but with this the pc TMNT fighting games comes to my mind and, honestly, hell it was a good game. I hope Ubi don't this project in some shitty game.
Ujn Hunter @ Dec 12th 2008 10:05AM
Oh how the mighty have fallen... the Itagaki-less Team Ninja is working on crappy Licensed video games! Yay!
commathe @ Jan 26th 2009 12:43AM
This is probably better than if they had done Mortal Kombat Vs TMNT, but not as good as Capcom Vs TMNT could have been.
I was hoping for a good Turtles in Time followup though.
