For games that are compatible with both, which do you find to be your more preferred way to play: using a GameCube controller or the Classic Controller? For us, we tend to go with the wireless bliss of the Wavebird, when allowed. How about you all? Which is the superior way to game in your opinion?
I like the GC. Fits into your hands perfectly, the joystick is better overall, the button mapping and L/R buttons are its only real downfall. Even the d-pad, though small is more responsive playing fighting games than the CC's d-pad. But there are certain games I'll use the CC over the GC.
Neither. I am new to console gaming and don't own anything other than Wiimotes and Nunchuks. I can't justify spending money on a classic controller, as they are really only needed for VC games.
I reckon many other gamers feel the same. Nintendo are missing a trick by not porting the controls from SNES and N64 VC releases to Wii controllers, and are losing sales because of it.
I think Nintendo should have thrown a classic controller in the Wii box along with the wiimote and nunchuck. I suspect the reason they didn't is they didn't want game publishers relying on the old-style controls that all consoles have, they wanted to force publishers to take advantage of the Wii controls. Also, they are cheapskates.
Anyway, the only game I have sorta requires the classic controller is Geometry Wars. It doesn't support the gamecube controller but it's way easier to play with dual analog sticks than using the wiimote, so I borrowed a classic controller for a week while I played it.
For Ocarina of Time and Pokemon Snap, the only VC I own that require a gamecube or classic controller, I use an uber-cheap 3rd party gamecube controller, which works just fine.
"Nintendo are missing a trick by not porting the controls from SNES and N64 VC releases to Wii controllers, and are losing sales because of it."
I can't think of a single SNES game that wouldn't be awkward without a Classic or GameCube controller, and Most N64 games would be straight-up impossible.
Super Mario World is unplayable with the gamecube controller. Button placement is just impossible to play with. I don't understand why Nintendo can't just change the buttons. I feel like they are trying to force me into buying a classic controller. Instead I decided not to play Super Mario World, I just threw away my money.
I'm the same way! Super Metroid wasn't so bad because you can remap the buttons yourself, but I couldn't even imagine paying for SMW and a classic controller.
Wavebird all the way. If you can't play it on a GC controller, I don't buy it.
The button layout on the GC is really really weird for most VC games. That said, I do still use it for the N64 VC games that I have because the joystick feels a lot more natural on it than on the CC, but I use the CC for everything that I use a D-pad for.
I use the GC controller for N64 games on VC, and most games where GC or CC would work, but that favor the analogue stick over the d-pad (Smash Bros Brawl or Mario Kart).
I use the CC for the rest of the VC games, and anything else that favors the d-pad (Mega Man 9).
I prefer the feel of the GC controller, especially for N64 games. However, for SNES games, the CC is required. I dare you to try playing Donkey Kong Country with the GC controller.
I usually go with the CC controller, because it resembles an SNES controller, and I maintain that the creation of the SNES was the pinnacle of mankind's achievements.
I do go with the GC controller when an analog stick is necessary, though (such as Brawl and Mario Kart).
My only problem with the CC is that the cord runs from the bottom of the controller. This was absolutely not necessary. It should've just been an exact replica of the SNES and had the cord from the top.
That is my only small gripe, I don't own a GC so I play everything CC that requires that type of controller.
I still think the GC controller is the worst controller of recent history. It feels like it was made by Tonka, the buttons never feel natural or comfortable, the shape is awkward, and the directional controls feel second rate. I'll use anything over a GC controller, even if it means not playing a GC game at all.
I like the CC, personally... I've gotten used to it over the past few years and think it handles a wide variety of games, and I'd much rather play Mario Kart: Double Dash with it than with a GC controller...
I do like the GC controller, don't get me wrong... I just don't have a Wavebird and I don't like being constrained by wires to the Wii!
As comfortable as the GameCube controller is, mine aren't wireless. I use one for Brawl, but otherwise I just use my Classic Controller these days. I actually didn't buy a Classic Controller until I got Super Mario RPG and it was too awkward with the GameCube controller, but now that I have it I intend to make good use of it. :P
I'm actually starting to get used to playing Brawl with the Classic Controller.
GC for everything but SNES VC titles (I couldn't play Mario RPG with the GC controller to save my life). I hate the PlayStation controllers so I despise the analog stick setup on the CC. GC and 360 are my two favorite controllers from their comfort and button layout. Plus Wii games that offer GC support usually has superior button mapping, like Sonic Unleashed.
Boy would I love to still have a Wavebird, but I use regular GC controllers. I don't even have a classic controller, but when I did try one out I found it to be pretty uncomfortable.
GC for me. I just can't understand how people can't play with this controller, as it feels your hands PERFECTLY. Yes, the buttons are of different sizes, but it still doesn't seem unconfortable for most games, I can even play fighting games perfectly with it. I've tried the CC, but it doesn't fit my hand so well. The only problem with the GC pad is the D-pad, but it is rarely used. And yes, it's clear that Nintendo made an awful controller setup when playing some VC titles with the GC controller to make you buy a CC. Super Mario World and Comix Zone are nearly unplayable with a GC controller. However, the GC controller works great in most Wii titles.
I generally use Classic Controller for D-pad heavy games, and the GC controller for analog-stick games. I don't have a wavebird, and I don't intend to get one, because I don't want to lose my GC controller's rumble, and I certainly don't want yet another battery sucker in my house.
I personally think the Wavebird will never be topped, although I will admit it's D pad leaves something to be desired. Mainly just the position.
The Classic is OK, but I just really don't like having something dangling from the end of my controller. A better option, and one that doesn't suck batteries, is to just get a real SNES controller, and a SNES to Wii/Cube adapter port. A bit pricey, but about as much as the CC. (I'm still working on getting one, as well as NES adapter.) I think being wired in is worth it for a perfect controller experience. Plus you can always get those Gamecube extension cables. Sigh... if only they allowed support for the Gamecube controller ports to control the Wii Menu.

CC all the way, the GC/Wavebird controllers are awful. Theyre like unconfortable oversized toys, while the CC is elegant and slick.

CC because the GC controller has a substandard d-pad. Also, GC button placement is rather weird.
lenny @ Dec 2nd 2008 8:20AM
Playing the Ocarina with a Analog Stick is lots of fun (using the CC controller). It feels more fluid and instrument-like.
Incidentally, playing Super Metroid with the GC was painful.

It depends on the game way too much.
For NES & Genesis, the Wii Remote is just fine (not that it was in the running)
For SNES the Classic is a MUST.
For N64 & 'cube-esque sequels (i.e. Kart & Brawl) it's the GCN controller hands down.
