Top 5: Infections
After visiting friends and relatives this Thanksgiving, I was left with something special inside. Was it fond memories? Was it a deeper connection with those who I love? Was it several containers of leftovers? Sure, I received a fair share of those, but the most significant thing I received this Thanksgiving was the flu.
I should have known. At least five different folks I saw over the course of the day claimed to be recovering from some form of the dreaded virus. Sure enough, by Friday evening I was sweating and freezing at once, aching all over, and debating on which end to point at the toilet (too much?).
Whenever I get sick, I tend to feel very isolated. While everyone else was out enjoying their four-day weekend, I was tethered to the bed. But it didn't take long for me to realize that I'm certainly not alone. Everyone gets sick sooner or later, and no one is truly immune. In fact, even our video game counterparts have their fair share of sicknesses that affect their goals. And thankfully, just like said counterparts, the infections are usually brief. Here's our Top 5 sicknesses to avoid.

What the hell does "fuzzy" do? I will admit that Yoshi's Island is one Mario game I haven't played.
Kaes Delgrego @ Dec 1st 2008 11:55AM
It makes the ground ripple heavily, causing Yoshi to sway back and forth, makes the music go crazy, and it turns the stage background into a Grateful Dead music video. It's one of the trippiest sequences in video game history.
And you should stop whatever you're doing right now and immediately acquire a copy of Yoshi's Island. :)
ZaxCG2 @ Dec 1st 2008 2:50PM
Wait... is that junk on VC yet? If not it NEEDS TO BE.
Possibly the greatest Super Nintendo game. Tied with SMRPG, Megaman X, SMW, Star Fox, Contra 3: The Alie- ah screw. They're all great.
Kaes Delgrego @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:14PM
Agreed, sir. :)
RupeeClock @ Dec 1st 2008 11:35AM
What, no mention that poison it badly drops your attack power?
Great job showing an enemy that curses you for the poison description by the way,
Kaes Delgrego @ Dec 1st 2008 11:52AM
I thought the Vapula had a poison attack? No? Oh well. I first tried to look for the poison worm, since it would be pretty obviously poisonous. After that came up dry, I still couldn't find any decent or clear images of a poisonous Castlevania enemy.
In case you didn't connect the dots, I wrote this column while I had the flu. So, it's probably not my best work. That's no excuse, though. Flogging accepted. :/
RupeeClock @ Dec 1st 2008 12:22PM
I think it MIGHT do, but I think it's known for cursing more than anything.
I shouldn't have gone off, you're making an effort to blog even when you're not feeling well...
Kaes Delgrego @ Dec 1st 2008 12:46PM
No worries, RupeeClock. Writing these things for you guys is my pleasure. :)
MowDownJoe @ Dec 1st 2008 12:06PM
No "Mashroomizing"? Have you not played Earthbound? Randomized controls out of combat, and in combat you'll attack your targets at random. Or is it because the cure gives you money rather than costs money?
Kaes Delgrego @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:16PM
You know, I've never been able to get into Earthbound. I know, I know, I'm a reprehensible human being. I'm already slightly disinterested in turn-based RPGs, with a few exceptions, but I just can't quite handle the pacing. Maybe I'll have to force myself to play through it sometime.
Deegan @ Dec 1st 2008 12:09PM
No T-Virus?
Kaes Delgrego @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:17PM
I had a feeling that this would come up. I wanted to keep the list limited to "status ailments" as opposed to full out infections (which I guess is a bit misleading considering the title).
Thanks for the suggestion, though! :)
Deegan @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:38PM
I see your point, but how could it NOT come up?
Kaes Delgrego @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:54PM
Duly noted, Deegan. Perhaps I should have given it a brief mention in the intro.
Zealot @ Dec 1st 2008 12:17PM
The importance of keeping good status in Castlevania rose to a whole new level with Order of Ecclesia, especially with avoiding Curse status. Because Shanoa's ability to attack is connected to her MP bar, getting Cursed renders her unable to attack for the ten or fifteen seconds that the effect drains her MP to zero. This could have been a nightmare, as the game could have stuck tons of Ectoplasms or other Curse monsters in every level, especially in spots where having no ability to attack and no easy escape meant certain death. Fortunately, Curse monsters were rare and the only real danger from Cursing came in the Albus boss battle.
Of course, all of these problems are meaningless if you have a supply of Uncurse Potions, but that's the easy way out.

Fun list, needs more Super Mario RPG Scarecrows :D
Kaes Delgrego @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:18PM
Ahh yes, one of the RPGs I did manage to get very into (see my other comment above). Sorry I didn't include it. Thanks for the suggestion. :)
aceofclubs23 @ Dec 1st 2008 1:27PM
I HATE being Eggplant'd. I curse at the tv every time it happens. And it happens a LOT!
Kaes Delgrego @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:22PM
Agreed!
jborah007 @ Dec 1st 2008 1:58PM
what, no Prime 3 phazon?
ZaxCG2 @ Dec 1st 2008 2:52PM
Ah, but is it not a helping substance in most of Metroid Prime 3?
jborah007 @ Dec 1st 2008 6:15PM
the short term effects my appear like that but long term your screwed (or at least for Samus)
Kenneth Caldwell @ Dec 1st 2008 8:56PM
Kudos to the Mario content. Remember the original Mario Kart, before the lightning item, when Peach would drop those mini-mushrooms to shrink players? And the feather that let you jump! Good times.
The Yoshi's Island fuzzy rules, too. Get well soon, Kaes.
Kaes Delgrego @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:20PM
Ahh yes, I do miss feather-only shortcuts (that extra slab of track in one of those Ghost Valley tracks ... so wonderful!)
Thanks for the kind words, sir! Great piece last week, BTW. :)
zchry @ Dec 1st 2008 9:18PM
Do you remember the curse/poison from the blue bubbles on Majora's Mask? I HATED that junk. It basically ruined whatever you had set out to or, at least, wasted a few hours.
Kaes Delgrego @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:21PM
That was perhaps the most annoying part about that game (aside from the weird save system). Geez, I hated that so much. Nice suggestion! :)
zchry @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:15PM
It honestly wouldn't have been so bad if you didn't have a time limit.
But if those things didn't exist, and you could save wherever you wanted (but keep the statues for the Song of Soaring), that game would've been amazing.
