Nintendo confident core will be satisfied in 2009
Well, we would think, given that there are a bunch of really unique and fun-looking games coming down the pipe next year. MadWorld, Sin & Punishment 2, The Conduit, and Punch-Out!! are just a few of the games that the core are likely excited for. "I think that next year you're going to see the tide turn a little bit, in terms of people realizing that the Wii can have something of interest for everybody," said Cammie Dunaway in a MTV Multiplayer interview. "So, yeah, I think next year is going to be a pretty good year in terms of the breadth of offerings that are going to be out there for a bunch of folks."The full interview with Cammie hasn't been published yet, but we'll let you know when it does. Frankly, we're interested in hearing more from her on these games, because, well, we're as excited for them as you are!

some announcements about what the zelda and mario teams are working on would be nice too...
Don-Don @ Nov 18th 2008 2:01PM
So we've got crap for Holiday 2008?
Nushio (NDF - Blue) @ Nov 18th 2008 2:04PM
Not blocking the homebrew channel, and specifically, MplayerWii would make me happy.
Just_a_guy @ Nov 18th 2008 6:43PM
um.... Mplayer still works for me :)
psyborg @ Nov 18th 2008 2:14PM
Don't forget House of the Dead: Overkill and "Play on Wii". Yea I'm really looking forward to Wii's 2009 lineup.
The 2008 holiday lineup is sad, with the exception of Deadly Creatures and maybe Mushroom Men. I hope they turn out as good as they look.
guttertalk @ Nov 18th 2008 3:36PM
I think Nintendo et al. might have just ceded the holidays to Fallout 3, Fable 2, and Gears of War 2.
Besides the games you mentioned, there are a couple of others to watch:
Tomb Raider Underworld
Rygar (a port but it might have some additions)
Animales de la Muerte
I think the Wii desperately needs a very, very deep action/RP game, preferably with a new IP. I was hoping Tales of Symphonia would be that, but the idea of sinking 40 hours into a mediocre game isn't appealing.
So, I will probably spend most of my holiday gaming time with Fable 2 and maybe some Dokapon Kingdom with the kids.
psyborg @ Nov 20th 2008 9:51AM
Don't know how deep its gonna be but theres that Izuna game for some action RPG love. That Okami meets SotC thing.
Sonic_13 @ Nov 18th 2008 2:19PM
The interview was commenting on the so called "hardcore" gamer being satisfied, not the core Nintendo player (whom is currently satisfied w/ all the sweet games we've gotten). Yes, it is confusing, but there is a huge difference.
samfish @ Nov 18th 2008 2:23PM
I consider myself a 'core' Nintendo player and I haven't really been satisfied since about April. Certainly not with Nintendo's output, at least.
Wario Land was alright, but the only other Wii-exclusive game I'm looking forward to for the remainder of the year is Mushroom Men.
They should have held on to Mario Kart until this month, so they'd have a major holiday release. Lord knows the game could've used the extra polish.
Mr Khan @ Nov 18th 2008 2:32PM
You're right about the distinction. She said something "fit for the Halo player" or something very much like it
I would agree with samfish in being not entirely satisfied, except that WiiWare/VC picked up the slack neatly, i was able to segway from Wario Land right into Megaman 9 and Super Mario RPG, and now it's on to Sonic Unleashed.
Nintendo could be doing BETTER, that's for damn sure, no real AAA titles for a holiday season is rather poor, but i'm not wanting in stuff to play, especially since i won't have time to buy de Blob, the now apparently good Judgment, Rygar, Mushroom Men, or Deadly Creatures
tom @ Nov 18th 2008 2:24PM
mmmm... mercury
Evan @ Nov 18th 2008 2:24PM
shooters == hardcore
shooters != core
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Nov 18th 2008 4:24PM
It all depends on shooter, you know.... If you narrow it down to consoles, of course, it's hardcore. (Nintendo's take on shooters - MP3:C - is more like "deep basement hardcore.") Because, as Wii goes, there is pretty much zero of waggle-free action out there.
Shooters shine on PC, where with mods and addons you can make out of any game pretty much whatever you want to and play it any way you like it. (e.g. most on-line multiplayer modes (CTF, TF, etc) were in fact first made as indie open source mods for Quake 1).
samfish @ Nov 18th 2008 2:31PM
I'm definitely looking forward to the Wii's 2009 lineup more than any other. Between MadWorld and Sin & Punishment 2, that's a guarantee.
There's also Punch-Out!!, Muramasa, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Klonoa, Fragile (which I probably won't like, but still find myself excited for it), Sonic & the Black Knight, Kizuna, Kororinpa 2, House of the Dead and two (almost certainly import) Haruhi games.
On the HD gaming front, I'm really only looking forward to SFIV...and even then, I'd rather have TvC over it. Maybe RE5, but I'd honestly prefer a Wii version just for the controls.
Mr Khan @ Nov 18th 2008 2:33PM
add in DS Fire Emblem, subtract House of the Dead and Fragile, and you basically have my must-buy list for the foreseeable future
Matthew @ Nov 18th 2008 2:58PM
Can you help me here out mate? Anything I'm really exciting for seems to be an import, where do I go to get this working for me as I live in Canada, I don't want to miss out on Fragile, Fatal Frame etc..
Shadow31 @ Nov 18th 2008 3:07PM
Definitely don't expect RE5 on the Wii. It's too much above the Wii's graphical power, they actually would have to completely remake the game. There is no way they could just port it to the Wii. I dunno if at some point they'd consider remaking it, but that would take a lot of time and money, so you shouldn't count on it.
CJLopez @ Nov 18th 2008 3:29PM
2009 will be killing my wallet, as the end of this year isn't already. Just look at this
- MadWorld
- Punch Out
- Sin and Punishment
- Tatsunoko Vs Capcom
- Fragile (yeah, i'm looking forward to that one)
- Sonic and the black knight
- HOTD: Overkill
- OneechanBara: Bikini Zombie Slayer
- Dead Rising: Chop till you drop
- FFCC: Crystal Bearer (hoping a 2009 release date)
- Metroid Prime 1 and 2 on WiiMake
- The Conduit
- Motion Pluss
And this year hasn't finished yet
- SpiderMan Web of Shadows
- Call of Duty: WaW
- Quantum of Solace
- FaceBreaker K.O. Party
- Disaster. Day of Crisis
On the Ps3 side
- Final Fantasy XIII
- Final Fantasy XIII Versus
- Resident Evil 5
- Street Fighter IV
- Looking forward on that Castelvania
- Tomb Raider: UnderWorld
Yeah, my wallet will hand up with all my gamer needs, xDDDDD
Covarr @ Nov 18th 2008 2:39PM
I can't imagine Punch-Out!! having decent replay value.
Shadow31 @ Nov 18th 2008 3:00PM
I never liked the first Punch-Out!!, to be honest, and I am definitely not a shooter fan. In fact, was I a shooter fan, I'd be an Xbox fan more than a Wii one. So MadWorld is about all there is that I care about even the slightest, and to be honest, I'm not all over that. I want my core games. Still no news on the Zelda, Mario, or Pikmin games, we haven't had a real Donkey Kong game since N64, the same thing is true for Kirby, a Starfox for Wii would rock but they haven't done that, the Metroid team is taking a break, F-Zero is due for another console release, Pokemon could use a REAL Wii title (not that crappy Colisseum), the rumored Kid Icarus is not announced... I could go on, but I feel I've ranted enough. When it comes to games, I'm still very dissastisfied. I'm not trying to complain; I'm keeping myself occupied with my other games/consoles, but I'm getting sick of Cammie Dunaway referencing a few games that aren't even core Nintendo titles as a reason for core gamers to stay. Most of what she references now is third party, which I guess is because they could rarely do that for GameCube... but now they're leaving the core gamers to third parties so they can focus on casual gamers. Sure, the occassional first party games like the Conduit and Punch-Out!!... but they've massively slowed down on their longtime core games that fans are expecting. I'll close with citing the fact that most of my friends who bought Wiis now no longer play them, claim to have lost interest, and are considering selling them. I'm keeping mine because some series (especially Zelda and Metroid) I refuse to miss a title in... but I digress a lot.
I'll be honest, had they decided to have DLC for Brawl so they'd continually add characters/stages/items/modes, I'd be complaining much less. And most of my friends would still be enjoying their Wiis. I'm certain of that.
conrad @ Nov 19th 2008 5:06AM
the conduit is not first party.
ejamer @ Nov 18th 2008 3:04PM
Hardcore gamers will never be satisfied for more than a week or two anyway. As long as the Wii keeps getting many fun and exciting titles - exactly like it did in 2008 - then I could care less what "hardcore" users want.
Mr Khan @ Nov 18th 2008 3:34PM
Bingo.
The fact that i am satisfied is all that really matters. If you're not satisfied, that's all well and good, but don't presume to tell me what i want
ShockWaveEX @ Nov 18th 2008 4:54PM
Yeah afterall there isn't enough casual garbage on the market. /sarcasm
phenylketonurics @ Nov 18th 2008 6:11PM
No, seriously. I'm completely satisfied with what's been served. Analyzing these games to the point where they aren't even remotely appealing anymore is what I'm SICK of -- graphics, clones, ports, features, storage. Holy hell, guys. These games have come a long way and claiming the old "oh, they're just trying to sell more" is ridiculoulsy pointless. They've always, always tried to "sell more".
None of the games referenced here make me more excited than the titles I already have. Casual as I may be, I've been playing these games since `88 and they're just as cool.
Shadow31 @ Nov 18th 2008 3:02PM
I agree. I got bored with the NES one very quickly, and Wii Sports Boxing isn't much more exciting. Unless it uses WiiMotion Plus, I can't even see it being worth a real consideration.
Shadow31 @ Nov 18th 2008 3:03PM
Sorry, meant in reply to Covarr.
NvM @ Nov 18th 2008 5:06PM
I sure hope so.
Last Wii game I bought was Brawl and haven't rented a game since Nov. of last year.
My Wii is currently sitting in my mom's living room, and I think it's even collecting dust there.
Mad World looks interesting and I'll buy Pikimin 3, but hats about it for announced titles.
bknight @ Nov 18th 2008 5:09PM
I think the hardcore gamer crowd have moved to the 360/PS3 now.
When Nintendo talk about the core they are talking about fan of the big 3 (Mario, Zelda, Metroid)
But give the wii 12 months maybe the core will be casual gamers :(
intro94 @ Nov 19th 2008 3:38PM
i dont think nintendo thinks core as zelda, mario or metroid(neither have competitive to improve for ,since none have multiplayer), and besides none of those games will come next year.
time @ Nov 18th 2008 6:38PM
"Nintendo confident core will not be satisfied in 2008"
wait... what?
Kraz @ Nov 20th 2008 8:20AM
I'm very excited about the conduit and mad world; hats off to sega for that. But i hope more quality stuff comes out before june. I have rygar (which really i'm also really excited for) Dead rising in jan. nothing really in feb. mad world in march. I don't think anything in april. The conduit in may. And then we're to june. I'm definately not holding my breath that fragile will make it to the states, and i'm still not convinced sadness will come out this year. Fatal frame probably won't get localized either. Deadly creatures looks like it might be a sleeper. A few people will play it and realize that there's a creepy story that was hiding from everyone starring dennis hopper and billy bob thorton. So i guess there is a chance i'm set for a while. If i can just get in one more game with blood that isn't an on rails shooter or star women wearing bikini cowboy suits i'll be totally satisfied until november or october of next year.
conrad @ Nov 19th 2008 5:06AM
"Well, we would think, given that there are a bunch of really unique and fun-looking games coming down the pipe next year. MadWorld, Sin & Punishment 2, The Conduit, and Punch-Out!! are just a few of the games that the core are likely excited for."
Those are really all of the games for "core" gamers that will be coming out soon. Four games. And punch-out will likely be disappointing. And that's not even nearly enough. Yes, there are a few good third-party games, even fewer great ones, and I'm pretty frustrated. Every (literally: every) gamer buddy of mine who bought a wii now also owns a big-boy system. I'm sure that some deeper and more sophisticated games are coming, but you're misrepresenting the situation.
Duke @ Nov 21st 2008 1:31AM
Too little, too late. I already got rid of the Wii and got a 360.
