So, with the holidays creeping up, and statements about
expected stock, we thought it might be a good time to ask who you know that might be looking for a console this holiday season, and also, what your general predictions are about Wii sales this year. Now that it's been out for a while, will the holiday demand be quite so crazy? Particularly with the economy doing, uh, a little poorly, it seems sales might not be quite so robust this year, but stranger things have happened, particularly when it comes to the gaming industry.

I already got the other one that I was looking for. I have had mine since the begining of 07, but my in-laws still haven't scored one. I was in TRU on Monday and 2 store clerks were fighting about the last 2 Wii's they had until Black Friday and I just walked up and said I'll take one of those off your hands. No waiting in line on Black Friday now. I can sleep a good night sleep.

Entertainment has traditionally been immune to "the business cycle" as it applies to other sectors. Entertainment has its ups and downs, but runs on its own schedule.
Now video games sit on a fine line between entertainment and high tech, so we shall see.

I think it will be sold out again. There may be no vouchers this time around, but they'll be hard to find the second part of December.

My mom tried my Wii Fit last week and decided she was going to jump on the band wagon. She went to Costco in Tacoma, WA last night and found a whole pallet of them for $244. She said there was absolultely no stock problem and it's very apparent that people aren't buying "luxury items" right now (nearly everyone at Costco was buying only food). This is typically a very jam packed Costco so I was surprised to hear of the supply. In addition she went near by to TRU and they had "plenty" of Wii Fit in stock, and she said it was absolutely no problem finding it.
I feel that for the casual target that Nintendo is hoping for, they might not get the sold-out demand this year at the holidays. People are being very cautious with their discretionary income, and that includes game purchases in the casual market. Granted our area right now is plagued by WaMu laying off next month and a recently ended 2.5 month Boeing strike. I feel the core gamer group will go out and pick up wii's if they haven't already gotten one/wanted to pick it up but other systems were priority. But I really don't think it will be that line out the door, "did the Wii delivery fairy come yet," sold out everywhere game this year.
And, if you have family members or friends that were considering Wii for the holidays this year, tell them to go to their local brick and mortar store and pick it up now. I recently saw piles of Wii's just sitting in Best Buy and Target in the heart of Seattle.

I think the actual presence of Wiis on store shelves right now is because of the increased supply Nintendo promised. I also think they'll be sold out by Christmas, but there won't be a zillion of them on eBay for a thousand dollars this time.
As for me personally, I have my Wii and PS3 and that's probably going to be enough as far as consoles go this generation. There also aren't any Wii games on my Christmas list, since I'll be buying Tales of Symphonia 2 on my own sometime over the next couple of days and I'm not interested in Animal Crossing. I already have most of the Wii games I want. I'll hopefully be getting a few PS3 games for Christmas, though.
