Metareview - Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
RPG fans, the first few reviews for Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World aren't too good. Sorry to be so blunt, but them's the breaks. We have yet to try the game, but what about those of you who've already picked it up and invested a few hours? Check out the reviews then provide your thoughts in the comments!
- GameTrailers (79/100) says it needed a bit more TLC: "In some ways, it's a worthy successor to the original, but it's ultimately just another passable action RPG."
- IGN (67/100) thinks this isn't the best benchmark for the genre on Wii: "Being the only RPG on the Wii's horizon, this doesn't feel like a relief -- it feels rather depressing."
- Games Radar (60/100) tells us: "If you can look past the last-last-gen flaws that absolutely should be gone by now, there's a totally playable bit of gaming here that'll scratch your RPG itch for the time being. But if you're unsure as to which new Tales game you should play, Vesperia or Dawn of the New World, go Vesperia."

I am trying to figure out why this is such a small release. I thought this would be a big game. I can't find it at either Best Buy or Circuit City (not even on their website). Only 3 reviews on Metacritic. I am surprised.
I am planning to pick it up over the weekend (provided I can find it). I loved the first game, and the complaints of the reviewers don't bother me to much. A "linear" game has never been an issue for me.
nintendo1889 @ Nov 14th 2008 8:38PM
For the love of all that's holy, why do people give this game low scores!? It's not THAT bad of a game! The music I found better than the original and sure, the graphics look like a gamecube game, but who gives a crap? IGN was way too critical, stating that the translation wasn't that great and the voice acting was horrible. If you really want to play a game with both bad translations and bad voice acting, take a look at Grandia Xtreme for example. All that game had were, like, five dungeons (okay, six...the last one) and only about 10 hours of gameplay. And they gave Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World, which is infinitly better than Xtreme, asinine scores? Give me a freakin' break. I don't trust the low scores one bit, and to those who are looking forward to this game, you won't be disappointed. I give this game an 8.5.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Nov 15th 2008 1:39AM
The game suffers from what every other Tales game EVER has suffered from
Awful voice acting
Music that isn't appropriate for the situation at hand
A cookie cutter, slow to start story
Too many static characters
Inconsistent presentation
Grandia was supposed to be a dungeon crawler, so when it came out, nobody was surprised that story and dialogue were put on the backburner so that gameplay could be focused on.
This game, however, as a traditional JRPG, has different expectations, and in my play time so far it meets absolutely none of them. Actually, the only thing I expected of this game (which was that it would become just as overrated as ToS did before it) isn't actually happening this time around, it seems.
Mr Khan @ Nov 14th 2008 8:45PM
That IGN guy is confused, apparently he's forgotten already about the slew of JRPG goodness coming to Wii
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Nov 15th 2008 7:04AM
Care elaborate on the "slew of JRPG goodness"?
I'm not tracking all the future releases and dunno good source where to check them.
Roto13 @ Nov 14th 2008 8:55PM
As someone who loved the crap out of the first Tales of Symphonia, I'd be worried if those two low scores weren't from Games Radar and IGN. I have a pretty long lists of sites who's opinions I give any weight to, but they're not on it.
Kilano @ Nov 17th 2008 8:40AM
first of all.... if i ever buyed a game after a IGN review....i would have NO GAMES!!!
i dont know how you guys think, but in Europe one of the Basics we learn in the Community is "if you want fun with your konsole and play your favourite genres....dont read IGN reviews, because...its like an inspection by a german car-inspector...way too hard"
I imported the Game from US and all i have to say "the graphics could be faaaar better", but the game is TOS2, it's what the fans want, it's what the fans buy.
and the jrpg genre is a delicate thing, some people dont like it, other love everything. So everyone has his own perspective.
Game Trailers reviewed it with 7,9 thats just 1% under 8/10, it's ok...it's good. And by the way...who doesn't want to know why Liyod seems to be badguy himself ~.^

i HAVE tales of symphonia:dawn of the new world and i've played about an hour of it (because i started playing tales of symphonia for the GCN and i wanna understand the ENTIRE story) and i can tell you it does NOT have bad voice acting at all!! and besides IGN are some of the CRUELEST reviewers out there! so screw them.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Nov 15th 2008 1:41AM
"and i can tell you it does NOT have bad voice acting at all"
Ahahaha, are we playing the same game here?
"IGN are some of the CRUELEST reviewers out there!"
AAAAAHAHAHA
Someone hasn't been to IGN Wii before. Cruel, my ass. They're some of the most lenient reviewers out there - are you only calling them cruel because they poo-pooed ToS? Maybe they did that because the game just isn't all that great?
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Nov 15th 2008 7:08AM
@Fatass, regarding IGN I beg to differ.
"They're some of the most lenient reviewers out there" - when it comes to 1st party Nintendo games. Rest they rate up and down without any visible cause.
Also, on several occasions, the IGN Nintendo folks were confessing that *RPG isn't their thing: they do not play RPGs. In other words, for you RPG review treat you better find some other site.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Nov 15th 2008 10:15AM
"gamefaqs submits some reviews"
So you act as though IGN is biased and then go and act like Gamefaqs is some reputable review source, despite the fact that to this day we still have people giving games like FFIIIDS and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle 10/10s?
You're an idiot.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Nov 15th 2008 10:17AM
Sorry Ihar, that wasn't meant for you.
I dunno, in the time that I've played the game it feels like nothing but more of the same EXACT game I played years ago. Not even a noticeable visual upgrade, which today is unacceptable. IGN's review is spot on so far.
jmf @ Nov 14th 2008 11:31PM
I just bought the game an hour ago...first wii game I've bought since Smash Bros
Vegna @ Nov 15th 2008 1:33AM
Those "last-last-gen errors? graphical, because they didn't want everything to look so different from the first game.
It's a fun game, though at times quite difficult, and in large part I enjoy it more than the first, though I am a sucker for games with a monster capture element in them, and the one in this is quite good. I personally give it a 9, my only two real issues being that monsters can't be controlled or use items, and its easy to geyt a game over since only your human allies have to die. And because I hate Emil's and Zelos' va (Emil reminding me too much of Eureka Seven and Bleach, dang Johnny Young Bosch), though the rest are quite good, I thought.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Nov 15th 2008 1:43AM
"they didn't want everything to look so different from the first game"
Which is why they took out the cel shading and darkened the look, right?
I don't wanna hear 'they didn't want everything to look different' yadda yadda, that's an awful excuse. The game does look slightly better than ToS did so far, but it still looks like an earlier Gamecube game, and there's really no excuse for that this far into the Wii's lifecycle.

You're an idiot.
You don't look to Tales fans for good reviews because they've got some of the thickest rose-tinted glasses out there. Now, when the game turns out to be a critical flop when every reviewer worth their salt poo-poos the fact that it has all the same flaws as the game before it, am I gonna come back and laugh at you? No, because you like the series, and who am I to tell you not to? I will reiterate, though, that the series IS flawed, and that there are SO many RPGs better than those in the Tales series.
Play some Vagrant story instead of this overhyped stuff.

Err, Vesperia doesn't seem to work. Every copy I've tried spits back an error.
Bowser the Baptist @ Nov 15th 2008 6:35AM
I'm not one to be negative, but the Tales games have always been rather shallow and overrated. If it wasn't for the fact Namco have really nailed the co-op RPG, the Tales series would long be forgotten. Having said that, almost every game is better with friends, so it could be argued that teh Tales series has no real redeeming factors.

i'm sorry my dear friend. i don't ACT i KNOW. and thousands even hundreds of thousands people login to gamefaqs! i bet you any amount of cash that if gamefaqs gave a game a good review and IGN a bad review that people are more likely to go with gamefaqs review and play the game AND like it. choosing to think otherwise only shows your ignorance more!
Bowser the Baptist @ Nov 15th 2008 11:00AM
Ign is biased towards mediocre games. There's no agenda against your blessed series; Tales is mediocre. The fact you cling to it so tightly saddens me so. This isn't 1998 anymore, you're allowed to move on. That pioneering real time battle system, though good, isn't enough to carry the Tales series, in all its blandness, no longer.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Nov 15th 2008 11:26AM
Man oh man your post is rife with logical fallacies. Just because more people GO to Gamefaqs doesn't make the reviews there any better. Is American Idol a better show than Firefly because more people watch it? Fuck outta here with that noise.
Sites like IGN are staffed by people who know what they're doing, people who have been gaming their entire lives, who know how to review, what and what not to look for in a game.
Gamefaqs is filled with mindless drones and fanboys like yourself. For every one good, reputable review, there's fifteen stupid ones at Gamefaqs.
You're the only one being ignorant here.

this is the last time i'm saying this and after this i will no longer argue with BOTH of you. take ONE review from IGN. take ONE review from Gamefaqs. i don't care how you do it but gather up some people (for the sake of avoiding headaches get about people) and ask them which review they agree with more. which ever one has the highest amount of people will be the winning review. if IGN's says it sucked ass (tos: dawn of the new world) an it got the most people then your right (the both of you) about it being old, boring and over all bad. if gamefaqs gives it a good review and people agree with gamefaqs more then there you have it. also if the "tales of" series is getting old, boring and over all then why is it that A TON of "tales of" games sell SO WELL and get praised? because (obviously) the majority of people SAY ITS GOOD! you and "the fatass of kickassness" opinion's of the game (or the series for that matter) DO NOT AT ALL change the "good" status of the game. sure your opinion's count but NOT ENOUGH TO CONVINCE ME AND ALOT OF OTHER PEOPLE THAT IT SUCKS. basically YOU AND "THE FATASS OF KICKASSNESS" OPINION'S ARE NOT ABSOLUTE! SO STOP ACTING LIKE IF YOUR OPINIONS ARE GOING TO CHANGE EVERONE'S MINDS! YOU WANNA GIVE YOUR OPININS? FINE BY ALL MEANS GO AHEAD! I CAN'T STOP YOU! BUT IF I GIVE MY OPINION THEN DON'T TRY TO CHANGE IT! YOU DON'T LIKE MY OPINION? OH WELL ITS MY OPINION IT'S NOT LIKE IT'LL CHANGE THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT! I'LL RESPECT YOUR OPINIONS BUT ONLY IF YOU RESPECT MINES! I'M ENTITLED TO MY OPINION JUST AS YOU ARE TO YOUR! SO STOP TRYING TO CHANGE MY OPINION BECAUSE IT AIN'T HAPPENING!
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Nov 15th 2008 4:55PM
What are you, twelve? Trying to channel anger by typing in allcaps?
Look. You're a fanboy of the series, so no doubt you're going to disagree with bad reviews. Get a bunch of people who aren't fucktards like yourself in a room, however, and point to an IGN review and some random Gamefaqs review, and you know what'll happen? I guarantee you the folks will agree that a review from a dedicated review site like IGN or Gamespot or 1up will hold much more weight than some average joe's predetermined opinion on the game.
What did I mean like 'predetermined'? One like yours. Since you're a fan of the series, you'll come to some idiotic conclusion that the game will be good, and when reviews that say the game isn't good DO come out, you say that without a doubt, they're wrong or too harsh, because you were predisposed to like the title.
One last thing. Don't tell me not to try and invalidate your opinion when the first thing you posted was "screw IGN". Because you disagree with their opinion, they're somehow less reputable than Gamefaqs, a site known far and wide for being filled with miserable fanboys? GTFOutta here.
Haohmaru @ Nov 15th 2008 4:55PM

cmdrpwn @ Nov 15th 2008 11:01PM
I think the reason Symphonia 2 has been attracting less than stellar reviews is because, perhaps more so than any game I've encountered in years, this is a PURELY fan-service, core RPG title. It is not made for people who haven't played and completed the first game, plain and simple. And from what I can gather, that category includes some of these reviewers.
I for one loved the first Symphonia title, and since it was the only real significant RPG release on GC, I didn't take it for granted. I'm only a few hours into Symphonia 2, and its solid; a good contigent of the dialogue is rather silly, and Emil couldn't perceive romantic overtures if his life depended on it apparently, but that makes the lines all the funnier. I can't imagine the humor here was ENTIRELY unintentional.
Beyond that, I still don't really get the whole monster capture mechanics, but I guess I'll just have to pick up on that.
Oh, and there is one other thing: can someone explain to me the following plot point?
It seemed to me that Luin was supposed to be a vestige of pro-Church of Martel sentiment, what with the bullies trying to coerce Emil into praising Lloyd, and his family being disgusted that Emil's parents were members of the Vanguard.
So why did that Church of Martel officer seem to characterize the place as some sort of teeming bastion of dissidence? Was it just that some segments of the population were pro-Martel, but the city was in fact ruled by the Vanguard?

All this rage over a mediocre series. If Tales had any real defining highlights then I could understand the anger, but come on. This is a C-grade RPG franchise at the best of times, and this current iteration looks extremely poor compared to its ambitiously low predecessors. @Bowser the Baptist & The Fatass of Kickassness, as well as the people on either sides of the fence in this opinion war;
Quit acting like your opinions and the opinions of a bunch of "expert reviewers" are the only opinions that can matter, mkay? That's why everyone is getting irritated at you. You have your opinions, and they have theirs. When you come up and tell someone that they are stupid because they disagree, you're the one in the wrong.
If you don't like it, or are not a fan of the series, drop your opinion and leave. All you're doing is trolling. Anyone who calls you stupid for having your opinion is trolling. You, by the way, have only been doing the latter, from what I've read. Also, Leonus, calm down. All you're doing is feeding the opinion trolls, which is basically just trolling in its own form.
Just... I hate it when people rely only on things reviewers say. I've read reviews on some of my favorite games stating that they're pretty much crap. Another thing I've noticed is that non-Japanese gamers are more along the lines of, "OMG RPG IZ FUR LUZURZ!!!" Or, they could be more intelligent about it, but I haven't seen much of that. I am a fan of JRPG's. You know what that gets me? "OMG UR A LUZUR LOLROFLCPTER!!111!1!!1!eleventy-one!" (Disclaimer: I'm lying. Most people at least say the preceding statements in an informed opinion way, not a noobish fanboy way.)
Will that stop me from being a JRPG fan? No. Will your comments, Bowser the Baptist & The Fatass of Kickassness, stop anyone from thinking that the reviews are the only means to measure the worth of the games? No. You know what the only way to tell if you're going to like a game or not is? FUCKING PLAY IT YOURSELF!! Ah, it felt good to yell for no reason xD...
Due to the fact that I'm too stupid to go to bed at a decent hour, and a little irritated at fanboy trolling and opinion trolling on both sides of the fence, I'm quite expecting a reply stating that I make no sense, or that I'm rambling, or that I sound like I'm having trouble saying what I mean, or... Something like that. But I wanted to say something, or else I'd go to bed irritated.
Bowser the Baptist @ Nov 16th 2008 9:24AM
"Quit acting like your opinions and the opinions of a bunch of "expert reviewers" are the only opinions that can matter, mkay? That's why everyone is getting irritated at you."
Try reading harder and differentiating between who's saying what. Fatass was saying Gamefaqs is filled with fanboy user reviews which cannot be trusted due to their innate, biased nature. This is concrete truth which cannot be disputed.
"Just... I hate it when people rely only on things reviewers say. I've read reviews on some of my favorite games stating that they're pretty much crap."
The following is a partial repost of what I have to say about reviews, metacritic, and all that.
Allowing Metacritic to dictate your tastes is not the sign of a real champion.
What we must do is understand what drives a websites content. It is not the guiding hand of an omnipotent editor: it’s Sales. Simple as. Every major website has a sales team, hell, my ex-girlfriend of mine works on sales for a major website. The job of a sales team is to push products towards a certain demographic.
Now, , I wonder what kind of person would visit, I don't know, a video game site?
Hmmm...
It will more than likely be some sort of video game junkie: a 'core' gamer. A most horrid word which will have to suffice for now. When I say core, I use the word to describe the 16-30 person who has access to copies amounts of disposable income. Every sector lusts over this figurative person. Now a sales team will look at this core market, identify what type of person they wish to chase, and push certain products. So certain games will be lauded while others are laughed at, or worse ignored.
Let me make this clear: it is a Sales team, not the editorial, or any perceivable zeitgeist of the international gaming psyche, that dictates whether a game is good or bad, a 7 or an 8 in these terribly inflated times.
TLDR: .read the reviews and don’t get butthurt when a douchbag reviewer says your favoured series is a piece of shit. Everyone’s opinion is valid, even those belonging to morons such as myself and the Tales Club here. We should never scan Metacritic for numbers like a lazy brat instead using our initiative and discovering for yourself whether a game is worthy of your time/money should be the better course to take.
TLDR: Tales sucks, live with it; JRPGS are cookie cutter nonsense; and the Japanese still don’t understand how to make a functioning 3D camera.
Haohmaru @ Nov 16th 2008 10:34AM
Yeah. The best piece of advice I can give, Secre, is this: don't feed the trolls. Seriously. As soon as they get themselves into an argument, they will - as you've no doubt seen above - return to it and reply with another page or so of hot air intended to do nothing more than piss you off.
@BowserTheBaptist
Considering your namesake's affinity for breathing "flames," your user name was well chosen.
Secre @ Nov 16th 2008 4:15PM
Bah, the only thing I have a problem with in Bowser's entire post was the last paragraph. The rest does a good job proving that I nee to read the rest of the comments before making one of my own, and not just skip it because I want to go to bed soon.
"TLDR: Tales sucks, live with it; JRPGS are cookie cutter nonsense; and the Japanese still don’t understand how to make a functioning 3D camera."
I have no idea what TLDR means, so hit me if I take the post out of context. You basically just told me that I'm stupid for liking JRPG's as much as I do (JRPGS are cookie cutter nonsense;), that you believe my favorite series is terrible (Tales sucks,), and that your opinion is the only one that matters (live with it;). Why do I feel that you have completely proven a point that I've stated in my earlier post? Oh, right... Thank you for proving the point of the following paragraph;
"I've read reviews [remix: reviews is probably the worst word I could have use. It's more like, "I've read reviews, comments, blogs, and all kinds opinions, as well as heard statements from friends and and strangers alike"] on some of my favorite games stating that they're pretty much crap. Another thing I've noticed is that non-Japanese gamers are more along the lines of, 'OMG RPG IZ FUR LUZURZ!!!' ... I am a fan of JRPG's. You know what that gets me? "OMG UR A LUZUR LOLROFLCPTER!!111!1!!1!eleventy-one!"
Let's get one thing straight. You said the Tales games suck. Well, that's your opinion. Saying, "live with it" does not make it true; it makes it an attempt at telling someone that your opinion is the only one that matters. Don't ever say that again on an opinionated matter. Actually, I don't give a crap, say it again. Doesn't make a bit of difference. You lose all credibility for having an opinion when you make that statement.
One more thing (Uncle style ;D!); I love JRPG's. "Live with it" will not tell me that I am wrong; it only tells me, instead, that you do not understand the meaning of opinions. I love the tales series. In fact, it's my favorite series of all the possible series to love. "Tales sucks, live with it" will not sway me to your opinion, and in fact, makes me lose any respect for you. Live with it.
I've bought every game in the Tales series since Symphonia and I've found them to be very in depth, throught provoking, hillarious, fun, amazing, insert other praising statements here games. The ONLY ones I have no bought so far are Legendia because that one REALLY does suck, so says my opinion, as well as Dawn of the New World because I'm currently broke. I've played each game through at least twice now. And I plan to play them again and again until each respected platform on dies.
This is the last post I'm making on the matter. If you do not understand that your opinion does not equal the only opinion, then there's no hope for stopping you from trolling it. I think I've fed the trolls enough, and should probably back away before the hot air begins to boil things. I'll be checking to see if I get hit for not knowing what TLDR means, since I've provided the privilege. Back to playing the original Tales of Symphonia for the fifth time ;D.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Nov 16th 2008 9:10PM
Damn, I missed this. Oh well. Bowser nailed it, and you acknowledged it, so whatever.
Lemme put one thing out there, though - I'd bet good sums of money that there isn't a bigger RPG fan on this site than I. Which is precisely why I can't say any game in the Tales series is 'exceptional'. That's just me, though... I mean, come on, Symphonia's story was cheesy even by JRPG standards and the music (which is VERY important to me) was good but used badly at times. The scene where Raine checks out the ruins still makes me cringe to this day.
@leonus11
looks like you've lost.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Nov 16th 2008 9:13PM
And just putting this out there - I'm pretty far through the game. I'm rushing so that I can get a start on CoD WaW, and so far, the characters have more depth but that's it. The story is damn convoluted, and I almost punched myself in the face when +spoilers+
I found out Lloyd got together with some random chick with almost no bearing on the story rather than someone that would have made sense
Secre @ Nov 16th 2008 9:37PM
I don't really see how my comments stated that Leonus lost, I basically said that neither side, Gamefaqs or IGN, should be used to decide if a game is good xP... These opinions given by either side are only suggestions; what one person or a multitude of people think are the best and worst parts of the respected game.

I'm new to the series, just picked it up yesterday. I think the reviews are, for the most part, spot on but that doesn't mean it's not a fun game. It's pretty much what I expected. The story is very average (and corny) so far and Emil, the main character, is a total D-Bag but once you get past that, it's fun.
