Play on Wii Donkey Kong has new stages, drastic changes
According to a Famitsu article translated by IGN, at least one game from Nintendo's forthcoming Play on Wii series will feature deeper modifications than slapped-on Wii controls. We've often questioned how well Donkey Kong Jungle Beat would work with the Wiimote and Nunchuk (given that the original game was played with plastic bongos), and Nintendo also seems unsure.
Because of this, the remade Jungle Beat is being moulded into a more traditional platformer, with repositioned enemies, new mid-level checkpoints, and only a handful of motion-controlled moves (The nunchuk's analog stick moves Donkey Kong, and the A button makes him jump). Significantly, there will also be completely new stages, though Famitsu didn't reveal further details (such as how many). The remake of Pikmin, incidentally, will feature no new content, the modified control scheme aside.
Can Jungle Beat work as a traditional platformer? We'll hold judgment on that, while noting that the DK Bongos played a major role in making the original game fun.

I still just want Metroid Prime, dammit. They need to bump that up on the priority list.

Delete "let" at the end of the link. It's worth a click, it's a nice image.

Wow... yeah, I'm pretty sure I would buy that in about two seconds. The only Metroid Prime game that I actually own (aside from the DS one) is the first one, sadly enough. I've been meaning to get the others, but haven't been able to for financial reasons.
scissors125 @ Nov 12th 2008 7:25PM
Whoa...
That has to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
I would gladly pay even $100 for that set. Especially since the Metroid Prime games are freaking awesome.
ali7300 @ Nov 12th 2008 8:38PM
dude, that looks so tight, i have one and three, but id still buy the bundle

That Pikmin remark makes me sad. I saw this news elsewhere and it brought hope that these games could be "Ninja Gaiden Black" or "Sonic Adventure DX"
Covarr @ Nov 12th 2008 3:34PM
I happen to have two sets of bongos that I got with the two Donkey Konga games. I hope they're not removing support for bongos entirely, and that the new control scheme is optional.
Garu @ Nov 12th 2008 3:41PM
It would be nice if Nintendo would add Bongo support to other games as an option for time to time. They could have added it to Wii Music, among other games. Again, just as an option. I still love my Bongos!
Hardy @ Nov 12th 2008 3:36PM
This is just for stupid people.
Smart people would just buy the gamecube versions of these games now before ebayers jack up the prices.
Luckily, I have copies of ALL these games their remaking in all their Gamecube glory! MUAHAHAAHAHAH!
Mr Khan @ Nov 12th 2008 4:28PM
Don't you think this might drive the prices down, considering that a more accessible version of the game is being sold on a console with a higher install base?
Magnus @ Nov 12th 2008 4:40PM
Nintendo, why can't you just start selling the bongos again??? You know they are compatible with the Wii, so why not use them???
Jeff @ Nov 12th 2008 5:35PM
I'd buy an adapter that'd let me plug my bongos into my Wiimote - or even new bongos that did that...
the tether is just so last-generation. :P
Wolblade @ Nov 12th 2008 7:17PM
Well, I believe you can buy the bongos on Nintendo's online store. I haven't checked in a while, but you used to.
Jeff @ Nov 12th 2008 5:33PM
Jungle Beat was unbelievably addictive, in no small part due to the unorthodox control scheme...
I don't know if it'd be much fun using traditional controls.
scissors125 @ Nov 12th 2008 7:23PM
I hated the freaking DK Bongos.
I didn't buy Jungle Beat for the sole reason that I hated how clunky and irresponsive they were for me.
And when I switched to the gamecube controller, I didn't feel like I had taken away the innovation. It felt like I had taken about 1000lbs off the back of my gaming experience, and I actually started to have fun with the game.
I couldn't imagine a DK Platforming game with the control scheme for the gamecube controller, so I'm definitely awaiting this game now.

Funny I actually asked for this: http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/10/03/play-on-wii-new-videos-of-old-games/#c14665411
Thanks Nintendo, always wanted to play this game but couldnt get past the stupid bongos. This version controlled like a traditional platformer basically equals DKC4 by the team that made Mario Galaxy. Hell. Yes.
