Sonic Unleashed trailer is mostly the game we want
IGN has uploaded a new video for Sonic Unleashed, showing off plenty of Sonic doing what Sonic does best: running at high speeds and collecting rings. Of course, because it's Sonic Unleashed, we're also forced to be reminded that there's a whole different game in this package: the Werehog battle and platforming segments. Thankfully, that's kept to a minimum in the video above, so feel free to enjoy.
As critical of the game as we are, we still hold out hope that we're wrong and the game will be really good. Of course, history tells us to expect something else ...

Running at high speeds and collecting rings was NOT what made the classic Sonic games great. It was the platforming. Sadly this game, like the Sonic Rush DS titles, seems to ignore that fact.

Secret Rings seemed to strike a good balance, i think

I've got to agree.
I give up. There will always be people who'll buy these new style Sonic games, just as there's always someone to buy the next MegaMan Star Force game. SEGA has very little reason to make a full fledged return to Genesis-style Sonic.
If they ever do, it'll be a MegaMan9-like download title, and probably a one off.

Glad I'm not alone on the Sonic Rush thing.
is secret rings a good balance between the two? The ring and mission system discouraged me a lot, but I still have the game lying around. I guess it's worth another go.

It's more linear than the Genesis game, but there's a lot going on that "interrupts" the action, so it doesn't feel like you're just letting Sonic run ahead
The untimely interruption was a staple of earlier Sonic

Man, I'm almost speechless that people actually AGREE with me on this.
I've been called a biased asshole for saying that I hated the Rush series because of the lack of platforming elements, and that the original Sonic games were all about speed.
Have they even played a freaking Sonic game from the early 90s?

The graphics look great and the daytime stages look fun. Now all i'm worried about is if the werehog stages will be nothing but "Go from point A to point B" while constantly shaking the Wii Remote.

Yeah, I don't want Sonic to run, I want jumpy platforming. Oh shit I'll just play Mario instead.

I think the Werehog concept is absolutely stupid. Unless Sega can either make Sonic games DLC like the excellent Mega Man 9 or somehow return Sonic to 2D form with contemporary ideals (e.g. Odin Sphere), they should really just let Sonic rot b/c they're killing him. Badly.

I think the werehog parts of the game actually make up for the shitiness of the hedgehog sections.
It still looks incredibly disappointing to me. I feel like buying Sonic Mega Collection AGAIN because of how low my hopes are for this game.

I think that dor Sonic to be Sonic, it needs a strong element of speed. That said, it needs the platforming to. The Sonic levels in the Adventure games seemed to show this best in my opinion.
But this trailer is a lot better than some of the ones I've seen before. That flying green enemy looked like a lot of fun to take down, and some of the werehog scenes are looking a lot more action-platform-y and less mindles-beat'em'up-y, which is good in my opinion.

The first sentance should read ". . . that in order for Sonic to be Sonic. . . ".
Either my keyboard is broken or my brain is.

Sonic was a good game because of its fast speed AND its cleverly placed traps and well designed levels. If the levels aren't designed well, then forget it.
I haven't seen enough of this game to determine if i like it.

The sonic series is so broken up now that this may be what we need though.
Honestly, gripe about your platforming elements all you want, boo fucking hoo people. I remember the old sonic games and honestly, I always found it ANNOYING how I'd have to slow down and go get those extra fucking rings JUST to get the damn special stages in various games. If I want platforming, I'll go to Mario but if I want what I feel is a fun test of quick reflexes, I believes that the Sonic series is where I want to go.
I'm not going to call the first series of posts biased but like any series, there needs to be changes. And while I don't think Castlevania Judgement is the proper change needed, I will say however that after playing Ecclesia, the 2-D scroller is getting UNBEARABLY STALE. At least Portait of Ruin brought something new to the table, Ecclesia just made a few minor, pointless changes.
Oh that and it has what's been one of the most boring stories so far.
Classic series need changes, be thankful they're keeping SOME aspect from the older sonic games.
