DSi hacked already?
We're tempering our excitement with a healthy amount of skepticism, but this video would appear to show custom code running on the brand new Nintendo DSi. It comes from Yasusoft, developer of the YSMenu custom DSTT menu. Experimenting with a friend's DSi, he seems to have gotten a "Hello World" message running from somewhere within the DSi's photo channel. GBATemp posters speculate that he is using a hacked TIFF image file to cause a buffer overflow, much like early PSP exploits did.
Our skeptical nature causes us to think that maybe the DSi's photo channel allows for animated images, or, on a more basic level, the video was somehow faked. We shouldn't be that surprised that someone is already running unsigned code! If this is true, it comes just one day after we asked how long it would take.
Yasu claims to be reluctant to release the method out of distaste for the proliferation of flash cards, though he is considering releasing some kind of "custom firmware."

Why bother? A DS Lite is $40 cheaper, and is already hacked. : )
Covarr @ Nov 4th 2008 12:20PM
Don't be skeptical. Yasu has already released legit things, like YSMenu for the DSTT cartridge, and the Mario Kart Paddle Controller hack.

Please release this, I'd love to see all the homebrew I have working on a DSi when I get one =[
And please someone fix Beup. >>
RupeeClock @ Nov 4th 2008 12:43PM
It's up to the creator of Beup, or someone using the source code to fix it.
It became broken when MSN/Live messenger made some changes to their service regarding DNS servers, and Beup did not update.
Kralos @ Nov 4th 2008 12:50PM
I know that, just saying it'd be nice if someone updated it, it was pretty useful when it was working :/
ejamer @ Nov 4th 2008 12:59PM
Ah, thanks RupeeClock! I had wondered why Beup stopped working, but was too lazy to do any research. Too bad - it was a great DS homebrew program.
(Luckily we've still got tons of gems, including Colors!, ComicBookDS, DSOrganize, DSZhongwen, LoneWolfDS, and NitroTracker.)
RupeeClock @ Nov 4th 2008 1:37PM
I agree, Beup was a prime piece of homebrew that boasted good functionality and nice interface, a rarity.
I'd also love if anyone made the effort to fix it.
...Anyway, with the release of the DSi, Nintendo and other services could capitalise on the release of such appealing software, releasing MSN/AIM/GTalk clients, paint programs, etc.
How many homebrew authors could present their software to Nintendo, and get it published as DSWare?
R_Fusion @ Nov 4th 2008 1:28PM
Why am I not surprised?
iofthestorm @ Nov 4th 2008 4:12PM
Yeah, this looks pretty legit. I think even if he does decide not to release it someone else will find the same exploit. My hinge just cracked and now it won't stay up properly, (fairly large crack, not just cosmetic) so I'm probably going to have to wait for the DSi to release stateside. I'd hate to give up my homebrew, DSOrganize has been awesome and Moonshell is great too, so hopefully by the time it releases stateside all DS homebrew will be working on it.

well i think that homebrew will get here by christmas. i also hear that piracy might be stopped because ninty might have put a different loader for games (so i hear). therefore if the hombrew can be made as an app then it will boot.

Unless he thinks that hes so smart that mobody else could figure it out I don't see how not releasing it is going to help stop flash carts.
Chane.san @ Nov 6th 2008 12:50AM
I don't understand the point of homebrew. I think if you want something on the DS, just ask Nintendo or get a job at Nintendo and try to get it on there that way. and since the DSi has the DSWare Shop they might put it on there if enough people ask. Also since I heard that the DSi has firmware and will have firmware updates then Nintendo will find some way to block it.
