Wii Warm Up: Other new old games
In the wake of Mega Man 9, and after Friday's discussion about Play on Wii, we thought we might ask what other franchises you'd like to see redone, either as Play on Wii titles, or in a classic, old school style, as was done with Mega Man 9. Want to see the other Metroid Prime titles given a motion overhaul ... or do you want to see a very small Samus putting the Metroid back into Metroidvania?

I want Music, the PS1 game, and some new 2d Oddworld game. Also, a return of Super Monaco GP and Hang On.
WalkingCarpet @ Nov 2nd 2008 11:06AM
I want another 2D Metroid, definitely.
Mr Khan @ Nov 2nd 2008 11:37AM
Another 2D Metroid is needed to sort of set the series right, as it were, and advance the story, as opposed to Metroid Prime, which was a spinoff arc
More 3D Metroid in the future, but more spinoffs
But something that should go really retro? Zelda. Another exploration-based balls-to-the-wall hard game like the original Zelda.
TheSipe @ Nov 2nd 2008 11:59AM
Earthbound aka Mother series. God am I jonesing for some pixely goodness from thos guys.
Patius @ Nov 2nd 2008 12:16PM
2D Metroid. No doubt that would rock.
A 2D Castlevania would also rock, as would a 2D sonic that went back to basics.
SyN DracuL @ Nov 2nd 2008 12:18PM
I think a remake or something similar of the gameboy Zelda games would be fun. I mean, how ca you not like the Oracle games?!
zchry @ Nov 2nd 2008 1:47PM
I never played them. (Deprived!)
I LOVE Link's Awakening, though! It's by far my favorite. Not the best quality-wise, but the nostalgia and the story are fantastic.
KingKRule @ Nov 2nd 2008 12:19PM
In light of the recent Earthworm Jim release on VC, I'd like to see a Earthworm Jim remake filled with quirky fun.
colbent @ Nov 2nd 2008 12:19PM
Some 16-bit Sonic stuff would be really nice. I know about those Sonic Advance games but he looks weird in them.
Gewurz Man got equipped with... Guitar Hero! @ Nov 2nd 2008 12:26PM
Just now getting into the 2D Metroid games, so, yes, That, WANT, MORE!!!
Wichto @ Nov 2nd 2008 12:48PM
a mario, i think that that would be neat to see mario go back to his original style, or... at least put a level of it in another mario game
Kokomadeta @ Nov 2nd 2008 10:54PM
Completely agree that Mario needs to be in 2D. He hasn't had a good 3D game since Mario 64. Seriously, everyone who never played Sonic Heroes says it's crappy, but doesn't really know, and every thinks Mario games are good.
3D Mario games suck.
alex @ Nov 2nd 2008 12:53PM
River City Ransom with online co op play.
Daryl @ Nov 2nd 2008 1:58PM
I like mm9's retro approach, but I would prefer new games to wiimote versions of old games. MM9 was a completely new game so that's different.
zchry @ Nov 2nd 2008 1:45PM
I want WindWaker. I still haven't even played it.
Also, let's get Gameboy games on Virtual Console.
hellhammer @ Nov 2nd 2008 1:48PM
I'd love for Nintendo to do a whole 'classic revival' Wiiware series. Imagine sequels of the SNES classic titles like Super Mario World, Zelda Lttp, and Super Metroid!
It just seems too good to pass up. Capcom made a lot of money because they gave the fans exactly what they wanted. Nintendo must realize the gold mine they sit on with the SNES catalog, why not capitalize on it when you've got Wiiware to take advantage of? Show people that Nintendo cares about it's old-school gamer and help Mega Man 9 to show that classic gaming is still very much alive.
If Capcom were smart, they'd make a new Mega Man X. And if Sonic Team had any interest in credibility, they'd do the same with 16bit Sonic.
SyN DracuL @ Nov 2nd 2008 2:37PM
I think a continuation of Zelda Link to the Past would be brilliant! That is my fav classic Zelda game.
Didn't they make a SMW 2 for Gameboy tho?
hellhammer @ Nov 2nd 2008 2:54PM
"That is my fav classic Zelda game."
Mine too. And I think a ton of other people who were able to play it via GBA or VC would be interested in a sequel. I'd really like to see something like what they did with the Satellaview installments of Zelda, only a full fledged game.
"Didn't they make a SMW 2 for Gameboy tho?"
Actually, that was Super Mario Land 2, but that's the Gameboy series.
And while there was Yoshi Island, which was subtitled 'Super Mario World 2', it doesn't resemble the first game much at all.
Kokomadeta @ Nov 2nd 2008 10:59PM
You haven't played a Sonic game since Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Shut up and go play Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Heroes. Play the first two on Dreamcast, and Sonic Heroes on whatever. They're good games. You're just too busy masturbating over fake sex in Grand Theft Auto to notice.
hellhammer @ Nov 3rd 2008 1:34AM
"3D Mario games suck. He hasn't had a good 3D game since Mario 64."
Should I leave some childish 'GTA masturbation' assault after your opinion then?
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Speaking of things I own, in addition to all three games you mentioned, I possess 6 other games made by Sonic Team.
And in my opinion the 3D Sonic titles absolutely pale in comparison to the original, 16-bit formula. They took the soul, energy, and character out of the Sonic series and without getting into specifics, I'll just say Sonic Team owes it to themselves (monetarily) and to the fans to attempt a 'retro' Sonic title.
The undeniable bottom line is that the overwhelming majority agrees that Sonic has lost what made him special. Sonic had something so fun and powerful, the series could fiercely compete with Nintendo's characters. But now, even Sega admits that most Sonic fans have issues with the 3D titles and sales have slipped.
Are the new Sonic 3D titles somewhat decent games? Sure, some are. But they can't compete with Mario anymore except in 2D.
Just_a_guy @ Nov 2nd 2008 1:51PM
what we need is the TRUE sequeal to Sonic 3 and Knuckles: A game done in this style would kick some major ass!
Why sonic games are awesome are becasue they are platformers with speed in mind, yet many moments where you have to slow down and tame the speed:
Anyone who payed sonic 1 knows that Marble Garden Zone was an awesome level because you had to inch your way across the long lava pits, in Springyard zone, you had to dodge the rotating spikes by doing some VERY careful jumping, in sonic 2 you have levels like Chemical Plant Zone where you are sometimes outrunning the screen, and other points where you have to do some very careful platforming to get yourself across the chemical baths, you had Hilltop zone where you could at one moment be rolling down the hills, and the thing you know having to quickly jump from platform to platform dodging the rising lava. oh and sonic 3 and knuckles? who doesn't remember icecap zone?
KingKRule @ Nov 2nd 2008 9:06PM
Wow youve done your homework, I'm impressed... ha usually in posts people make vague references to things. Not you sir... not you.
SyN DracuL @ Nov 2nd 2008 2:38PM
Random rant: I wish they would put Mario Kart on wiiware!
morikaweb @ Nov 2nd 2008 3:01PM
I'd also love to see a lttp sequel, preferbly using the same type of graphics.
Another one I'd love to see but which I know will never happen is a all new 16 bit Final Fantasy game in the style of IV, V and VI.
Gewurztraminer @ Nov 2nd 2008 3:46PM
Well, there is Minish Cap for GBA. I enjoyed it (as LTTP is my first and favorite Zelda game) but it was a little easy, which is saying something as, in general, I tend to find the Zelda games fairly challenging.
Anti-Villian @ Nov 3rd 2008 8:56AM
First title that springs to mind, Gish! not an old nintendo franchise but for it to come to the wii would be a dream, it had amazing controls without the wiimote and to add one would be sublime, 2D revolution FTW!
Gundam_Warrior @ Nov 2nd 2008 3:46PM
Play on Wii/Wiimakes-
Geist
Pyschonaughts
WiiWare-
Sonic the Hedgehog 5 (2-D game directly after Sonic and Knuckles)
Splatterhouse 4 (make it a continuation of the original series not the upcoming remake)
Guardian Heroes - Remake or spin off of the original Sega Saturn classic.
Virtual Console system additions-
Sega Saturn
Sega CD/32X
Atrai 2600
Gameboy
Gameboy Advance
Kokomadeta @ Nov 2nd 2008 10:57PM
Sonic and Knuckles isn't Sonic 4. It's Sonic 3 part 2.
Josh (be logical; vote for Obama) @ Nov 2nd 2008 4:06PM
New 2D Zelda and Mario games, please, a la A Link to the Past and Super Mario World.

WiiWare-
1) 2D sequels of those AWESOME classic games we still love and adore!
2) the 2D classic sequels should have DLC at reasonable prices.
3) Online play such as co-op mode (for games such as final fight and TMNT) and VS Mode (for games such as Street Fighter and Killer Instinct should Rare ever make another for the Wii which i highly doubt) and even leader boards would nice.
Wii games (store purchased games which you open the case and insert the DVD disc into the Wii)-
1) Motion games that Utilize the MotionPlus. i released before Spring of 09 then try using clever methods such as waggling the Wiimote and holding down the A button for a certain action and just simply waggling the Wiimote for a different action.
2) The game should have decent graphics and good action while making sure that there is NO LAG even if there's a large number of enemies on the screen. if the graphics need to be toned down to prevent any lag then they should be toned down. if there's one thing that many Wii owners prefer above all else it's GAMEPLAY ABOVE ALL!
3) Online play (if at all possible which IMO i think it very much is if ninty gets to work on their servers or whatever it is that makes online play smooth, lag free, glitch free and allow for a vast amount of players to play online without crashing) such as co-op and VS Mode.
should ninty do any of the above things i mentioned above then they will see a DRASTIC increase in their profits, even bigger then the profit made from Casual games IMO.
ATown @ Nov 2nd 2008 6:44PM
I see a lot of people saying that Nintendo should put Gameboy games on the VC. How I agree completely, I feel the DSi with it's own downloadable service would be a more obvious choice for this. Nintendo has already stated that they will be releasing the original WarioWare for a couple of dollars which was originally for the GBA. I don't see why they would not want to put regular GB games on their as well.
I would not pay a few dollars for them, however, unless they are placed into packages. 5 bucks for Mario Land, Metroid 2, and Kid Icarus 2? I'd buy that!
Now as for retro revival titles. I have been stating since WiiWare was announced that Miyamoto himself should helm a new 2D Mario adventure. I'm partial to the Super Mario World 3 look myself, but whatever it looks like I'm sure it would be a hit.
Garu @ Nov 2nd 2008 8:11PM
This may sound simplistic, but I'd love to see a new Pac-Man game! Take the best elements from the previous games and design all new levels and new cut scenes!
I'd also like a new Arcade Donkey Kong game.
Crustin @ Nov 3rd 2008 9:07AM
I'd buy that!
mediumbluemetallic @ Nov 5th 2008 11:30PM
I'd love to see some SCUMM, aka Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion, titles. An un-adulterated version of Maniac Mansion would be cool seeing as Nintendo raped the real version. I'd take the NES version though. Or a new MM would be sweet. Other than that, Donkey Kong titles have lost their charm since the N64 and SNES; I'd like to see new DKC titles. Of course, Goldeneye with online multiplayer goes without saying. It could be the original version with added online, or a remake with better graphics. But seeing as Microsoft owns Rare and couldn't get it (even though the port was nearly complete), I'm sure Nintendo won't.
On another note, I'm starting to get really bummed about the lack of what I'm calling "current" content on the Wii. "New old" games are cool, but what about "new new" games? Ex: #1--Opera's flash version. More and more websites are asking me to update my flash to continue. #2--Resident Evil 5. The most recent report (Oct 20-something) says that the Wii couldn't even handle the title screen, and that a Wii port isn't going to happen, that another RE game on the Wii is several years off. #3--Quality online racers; Need for Speed's newest installment due out this month does NOT include online play for the Wii. Why? If Mario Kart can do it, if the same NFS game can do it on PS3 and 360, why not the Wii version? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Wii, and wouldn't ever consider trading it on a 360 or PS3, but it's discouraging when we keep getting left in the dust. If RAM's the problem then Nintendo could sell us a RAM upgrade in the form of a memory-filled console stand, connected via USB.
Kokomadeta @ Nov 2nd 2008 10:56PM
Wind Waker is a great game. I'm sure you'll enjoy it when you play it.
Ujn Hunter @ Nov 3rd 2008 8:47AM
2D Metroid FTW! I would buy 30 copies! ;)
ninjai @ Nov 3rd 2008 10:11AM
Rival Schools2. As seen on the dreamcast. Great fighter extremely underrated.
Big Wes @ Nov 3rd 2008 11:13AM
I'd like to see the remade 2-D Bionic Commando on Wii, as well as a new installment in the Ghost n Goblins series.
Kewlrats @ Nov 3rd 2008 1:23PM
I just did an article about this last week... I had my "Top 10" revivals, as well as some honorable mentions.
