Say what you think: Reggie lays into Disaster: Day of Crisis
If you thought our 7/10 review for Disaster: Day of Crisis was harsh, you should hear what Reggie Fils-Aime -- yeah, that Reggie Fils-Aime -- thinks about it. Twenty-five minutes into IGN's latest Nintendo Voice Chat podcast, Matt Casamassina revealed how Reggie "doesn't think Disaster is a $50 game," and regards the audio as "laughable." Burrrrn.
We have to confess we're slightly dumbfounded to hear Reggie delivering such a hefty haymaker to one of his company's own games ... while speaking on the record, as well. We suppose it's, uh, refreshingly honest?

Man, this is harsh, and seeing how maybe this won't let a localization of the game be happening any soon, maybe 'll have to get that import pettition on the work already
Matthew @ Oct 30th 2008 8:34PM
This slightly confirms that feeling I had. Not only does NOA not want to give us variety, they are looking to cash in on whatever they can and at whatever the cost. So many games are released in Jap and they may not sell well but at least they have a library that consists of more than Zelda and Mario. I feel like NOA isn't willing to take the risk and look at titles that are instance money makers or the least minimal in cost for them that it's worth the risk. I'm sure the audio is laughable but a game that was hinted at waaaay back in the day that got people so excited isn't somethin you shouldn't s*** on. It just goes to show NOA isn't really trying to keep our best interests, meh. My 2 cents... and as I alwasy say, bring bloody Fatal Frame here...
P.S. Is there anyway to convert the text/speech on a jap title to english? (i figure not but it's worth asking)
Gendreavus @ Oct 31st 2008 2:24AM
First of all, "Japanese", not "Jap", and second, no. If it were that easy, the Mother 3 translation wouldn't have been such a big thing. Plus, localizing games would be a simple snap of the fingers rather than actual effort, meaning that localizing games wouldn't be any risk at all, and therefore we would get everything that would come out in Japan.
Mogster @ Oct 31st 2008 6:21AM
Dude, why would you import the Japanese version? If you're gonna import, just get the UK version...lol...
Matthew @ Oct 31st 2008 9:49AM
@ Gendreavus
Japanese* I do apologize for that. I do get your point and you are right. I more or less am just saying I wish they took risk on certain titles but of course I'm hoping they are the titles I want. For NOA I understand it's their best interest to localize proven titles rather than just everything consider it takes time and effort. Once again though, I feel they are looking at what makes money and sometimes they loose out on being able to bring a gem over >.
Gundam_Warrior @ Oct 30th 2008 9:12PM
As much as I hate to say it:
This is coming from a man continuing to defend Wii Music and call Wii Sports 2 a "hard core" game.
I like Reggie but be damn that was a stupid statement.
Atlantis1982 @ Oct 30th 2008 10:54PM
EXACTLY how I think on this. The audio is alright for this game, but the fact he encourages Wii Music far more, and advertised just as much, than the titles catering to us. He either has low standards, or a pure hypocrite.
TWOO DEE @ Oct 31st 2008 12:05AM
i'm just confused that he would make that comment, when...didn't nintendo publish the title?
CJLopez @ Oct 31st 2008 11:46AM
Oh, true!!!, forgot that stupid thing
Mr Khan @ Oct 30th 2008 9:33PM
Yikes
So there's your reason we're not getting it.
Reggie's becoming an asshole really quick, though. Do not want.
Triptych @ Oct 30th 2008 9:42PM
Which member of Disaster's development team dumped Reggie's sister, do you think?
Roto13 @ Oct 30th 2008 9:46PM
Protip: No company is going to refuse to localize a game soley on the basis that one of their higher ups personally doesn't like it, even if they are as high up as Reggie. That's just bad business.
Mr Khan @ Oct 30th 2008 10:22PM
Ted Turner's personal distaste for violence in children's programs is what helped lead to the premature cancellation of SWAT Kats
Roto13 @ Oct 30th 2008 10:23PM
That's completely different. That's a question of personal ethics. I'm sure Reggie doesn't think Disaster is harmful to it's target audience.
pasta @ Oct 30th 2008 11:03PM
For those thinking about importing the game, why not just import in from Europe? It's already in English here.
Knema007 @ Oct 30th 2008 11:37PM
A somewhat related comment: I can't find the new Nintendo Voice Chat for this week. It's not listed on the podcast page for the website, nor in the recent updates for the IGN Wii page. Any suggestions besides subscribing on iTunes?
MidnightScott @ Oct 31st 2008 12:53AM
You know what, screw you Reggie, you piece of s***. You don't just announce a game before a console comes out to get us to buy the console, and then decide not to release it. It sounds like bait-and-switch tactics, except we aren't getting anything in return. Oh well, if it doesn't get released here I can just import the Euro version and play via Homebrew. Screw you Reggie & NoA
Metayoshi @ Oct 31st 2008 12:58AM
Well, Nintendo really didn't develop the game anyway. It's a game by their recently acquired second party Monolith Software (Xenosaga and Baten Kaitos for those who don't know), so I could see Reggie criticizing it.
It's not like Miyamoto doesn't criticize games like Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess.
samfish @ Oct 31st 2008 2:14AM
As if we needed more proof that NOA fucking blows goats at this point...
chukz @ Oct 31st 2008 2:29AM
Yeah, I think this maybe wasn't a good move on Reggie's part... if the game ever does get localized it's going to be tough to take back those words, and who knows how it will affect the public reception of the game.
On the other hand it is good that it's not just "fantastic game this is going to be amazing" blah blah blah that all the higher ups are guilty of (of any corporation). It's just maybe not the right time for it, as it may cause some conflict with the people who made the game and they might go and put it on another console or something...
@ 14
It's true Miyamoto criticized Zelda: TP and SMG, but... he MADE those games, they were his creation. An artist not proud with his painting is different than a critic that doesn't like the painting (stupid analogy but w/e). Another thing, those games have been out for 2 years (Zelda) and 1 year (SMG) so it's not like they didn't make their share of sales.
Ethan @ Oct 31st 2008 4:07AM
Is he talking about the voice acting being crap? People have brought Resident Evil for years!
Kraz @ Oct 31st 2008 6:14AM
It's sad, but nintendo if america has reduced me to this. I don't care if the game is crap, i'd still buy it. Know why? Wii have no games. (did you see what i did there? clever huh.) This game would be one of the only ones with at least a teen rating that is original (as in not a movie port i.e. godfather, scarface,) The wii has been out for a damn long time in the gaming world and what does it have to show for it's older more violence-craving fans/wii owners? It's like when we look at a wii nowadays it just has a big sign around it's neck that says "ha ha i fooled you, go buy another system. I've already taken your money!". I counted the other day and there are like 15-20 games that i want to at least play, possibly own. The catch? 10-15 of them are either not out yet or not localized and possibly never will be. There is so much potential here but this generation of games is possibly about a third of the way over and nintendo is taking way too long on making this the landmark system that i could be. Come to think of it this has kinda become their trend huh? Make and awesome system with great ideas and simply not produce enough quality games for gamers. Frankly i'm tired of having "fun"... i want to be moved, i want to be inspired, i want a good game. Just to be clear real quick there were at least 3 games that i thought had valueable content (story, intensity) but 3 games to two years is just not a good ratio. There already 3 games coming out in the first 3 months of 2009 that i'm sure i'll really enjoy, but we need more of that. We need to stop getting dick around by N.O.A. and Nintendo in general. They need to remember that their fanbase grew out of diapers and into gun holsters, and if they don't do anything about it more and more of us will be forced to grow into systems with more accomidating software selections. Damn that was alot of writing. I didn't used to rant this much. I hope that's out of my system for a little longer this time.
hellhammer @ Oct 31st 2008 3:01PM
"The catch? 10-15 of them are either not out yet or not localized and possibly never will be."
Sega Saturn allllllllllll over again.
I'm starting to become agitated and resentful of NOA.
Even when Nintendo prematurely ejaculated, giving us every decent game they had under their belt, all at once, and then moved on to create a huge dry spell, I defended them.
But now Reggie is pulling me out of my denial. I don't want to find out that NOJ is publishing a game like Fatal Frame and that NOA doesn't even know it exists, only to have them turn around and say "oh, well, we can't just MAKE games appear! You've got to wait 2-3 years."
The games we want are already made. Stop talking shit about the titles your company is trying to sell to half the world already. How are we to feel if one second you're saying "If this game sells well in Europe, we'll bring it over." and then wait a few days after it's release in Europe to say "this game sucks, don't buy it at full price"...wha-WHAT!?
Thanks for sealing that deal, asshole.
I REALLY don't want to hear what Reggie thinks about Disaster Day of Crisis, or any video game for that matter. I want to them to release the game they've been teasing us with since 2006, read the reviews, play it, and decided for myself.
Nigeria @ Oct 31st 2008 6:25AM
Sometimes this game feels like it was left in a time capsule; Dreamcast era textures, the sluggish on-foot navigation. It does seem unpolished, so maybe Reggie has a point about the pricepoint.
Personally, I believe NOA might be scared of the 9/11 allusions a rabble-rouser may want to conjure up. It does sound silly, but there are parts were buildings collapse on themselves - due to earthquakes - and our society, it seems, is becoming ever more PC. Such controversy may hurt Nintendo's newfound image, taking away attention from big sellers such as AC and Wii Music.
Disaster is an awesome game by the way; the original best light gun game since Umbrella Chronicles.
Nigeria @ Oct 31st 2008 6:26AM
Reggie's approach makes me sad for Fatal Frame.
bug frawg @ Oct 31st 2008 7:20AM
why? he didn't say fatal frame sucks, he said disaster isn't that good.
and I'd rather reggie speak his mind than lay on the "this product is amazing! BUY IT NOW!!!" that so many other companies spout on a regular basis.
ShockWaveEX @ Oct 31st 2008 8:07AM
So he bashes this game yet defends games like Wii Sports 2? Lawl.
pb @ Oct 31st 2008 9:42AM
Has anyone commenting actually heard the podcast? Doesn't the text above suggest that it isn't Reggie himself saying this but someone else suggesting Reggie said it?
I really hope you guys don't read newspapers...
Popyman @ Oct 31st 2008 9:43AM
"Protip: No company is going to refuse to localize a game soley on the basis that one of their higher ups personally doesn't like it, even if they are as high up as Reggie. That's just bad business."
Mother 3 says hi.
mai @ Oct 31st 2008 12:19PM
Quite honorable and straightforward act, Reggie... it's true, Disaster is kinda shitty game, don't know why people so excited about it. I'm voting for US-release of Fatal Frame 4!
goshogun1 @ Nov 1st 2008 3:11AM
Man, that really pisses me off. I am almost to the end of DDOC, and I really like it. Maybe one of my favorite games this year. Graphically it holds up pretty well, especially when insane disasters are occurring. I don't find the voices bad at all. I have seem much worse. It's like I am stuck in a cheesy guilty-pleasure Bruckleheimer-style action movie. Including absurd plot twists, and over the top actors, and a relentlessly intense and engrossing soundtrack. Some of the scenes are the most thrilling I have ever seen in a game.
And Reggie doesn't think its good enough for US audience?
It feels like a game actually made for the US audience.
Shame on you man! Now lets get Atlus or Ubi Soft to buy it and release for $40.
