DS Fanboy Review: Ninjatown

Gallery: Ninjatown
The game opens up with a small vignette showing off Ninjatown and its many inhabitants, working diligently to maintain its cute population. The scene then departs to the outer skirts of the town, as Mt. Feroshi erupts and reveals the sinister force that will soon beat down the gates of the cute Ninja populace (it's revealed by Old Master Ninja later on that this sinister force numbers more than 9,000). It's then that we were thrust into our first conflict.
It all starts off easy enough, as the first four stages in the Suburbs area are somewhat of a breeze. But, once you get down the basics with your ninja, anti-ninja and pea-shooting ninja troops, you'll feel like you're well on your way to breezing through this game. The reality of the situation, however, is more grim.
Ninjatown can be tough. It's like any other strategy game, however, in that a carefree attitude and spamming a ton of foot soldiers in an attempt to get through each level just will not work. The balance between enemy and friendly unit types is remarkably balanced, meaning that every single choice is that much more important. Should I upgrade my ninja hut near the entrance of the level, or should I use the money to build pea-shooting ninja near the back, to take pop shots at anyone that passes the first wave of troops? It's a fine line to toe, which can be frustrating at times, and incredibly satisfying when you've enacted a winning strategy.Thankfully, throughout the game, you'll gain access to nifty powers that will help you cream the competition. Aside from a gust of wind you can use by blowing into the microphone, there's also an ability that allows you to speed up your units, just to name a few. These powers can come in handy, especially when you're dealing with a high volume of enemies all at once, and really help you deal with what, at most times, feels like an incredibly superior force.
If you're not a strategy buff, you're really not going to find much enjoyment in the title, other than the hilarious Mayor of Ninjatown and the great dialogue that occurs between Old Master Ninja and Ninja Consultant. It's a very charming title, but being a real-time strategy game, will only appeal to a single niche of the gaming sector. It's a shame, too, because the game is good, through and through.
Final score: 8.5/10

Sorry to bring this angle, really, I am.
But this game looks like utter and absolute garbage, and has since the moment it was announced. That's adorable and all that some 1UP employee chased his dream and turned a kitschy lil' stuffed thing into a game, but this looks like shit. This title is better relegated to flashgamenobodywilleverreallycareaboutville. Don't understand why this made it to DS. Sorry to be the douche here, but I'd honestly rather try Pokeman for the first time ever, or some other game I could care less about. There's a bloated sense of self-importance the smaller media is following this with that makes no sense to me.

Wow dude, you seem pretty worked up over what looks like a fun little tower defense style game.

"... a gust of wind you can use by blowing into the microphone," Oh dear....
I think all games reviewers should take a stand and automatically deduct points from any DS game that features blowing into the microphone. Its abuse as a truly awful gameplay gimmick was barely acceptable in 2005, it certainly isn't acceptable now.

One of the reasons I hate DS games that can be blown in the microphone is because if your in public and you have to blow in the microphone...you'll look like an idiot.

I downloaded the demo from the Nintendo Channel and I liked it a lot. It's still available if anyone wants to give it a try.

So, I'm getting mixed signals here and the review itself isn't all that helpful. How many levels are there? Is the gameplay all that deep? Is there multiplayer in any way?
Should I buy this or Lock's Quest or are they entirely different kinds of games?
Right now Lock's Quest is looking a lot better.

I got it. It's an EXCELLENT game: hillarous and fun and everything... but with one drawback: it's too short ! I don't play a lot of tower defense games and i still finish this one in a few days (with top scores in every levels). And there's no interest in redoing map you already completed, even if the dialog are hilarous ("_ how many monsters? _ a lot! _ tell me how many! _ over 9000! _ oh my god, that's a lot..." !!!)
So too bad they don't had some sort of random (or do-it-yourself!) maps, because it seems easy to do and it would had add extra play.

Raedien, here's your answers:
_ There is 9 "maps" with 4 levels in each, so 36 levels in total.
_ I found the gameplay very good: you have to choose between different type of ninja huts (fast, strong, hand to hand fighting or shooting etc.), where to place them, if you want to upgrade them, you can also had special huts that will boost the previous one, click on your ninjas to speed them up or use ol' master powers (6 in totals) instead, there is also special bonus etc. All in all, it may not be as strategic as, for example, Age of Empire, but pretty descent.
_ There is a multiplayer mode (local wifi), either with single-card or multi-card play, but i didn't try it yet.
_ I try Lock Quest also and i can tell you this: Ninja Town was so addictive and fun i play it non-stop for a week ! Lock Quest on the other side: i never pass the fourth level, not because it was too hard but because it was booorrrring. The design, the dialog... everything was dull and booooorrrring. (Ninja Town makes you laugh hard, Lock Quest makes you think "geez, another clich story about monsters in fantasy land...")
