THQ vs. Activision in a legal Baja boxart battle
One of this week's releases might have flown under the radar, if not for the fact that the publisher is being sued over the boxart. It may not even end up being one of this week's releases! THQ has filed suit against Activision, claiming that the boxart for Activision's PS3/360/Wii SCORE International Baja 1000 infringes upon THQ's copyright, in that it looks too similar to THQ's PS3/360 Baja Edge of Control.
According to THQ, both the front and the back of the boxart are "virtually identical," but we think THQ's seeing patterns where there are none. Sure, both games feature red trucks displayed in a distorted perspective with their right front tires coming into the camera kicking up rocks while the passenger holds on to a bar on the front with his right hand; and both feature blue and white trucks behind them and to their left, descending from a jump; and both feature cacti on the right side in roughly the same position; and they both just happen to have yellow-on-black distressed "Baja" logos tilted up ten degrees. But that's all.
Through this lawsuit, THQ hopes to delay the release of Activision's game until they can produce some different artwork.

hey maybe the guy is grabbing it with his right hand in the same way because of centrifugal force, if you are turning left (well sort of left right?) then centrifugal force would pull you to the right and by reaction would reach out and pull yourself the other way. Everything else is blatant copyright infringement!

There is no such thing as a centrifugal force. Perhaps you meant centripetal force?

I love it when people who say something correctly are then "corrected" by other people on the internet. According to the dictionary:
"centrifugal force
–noun
an outward force on a body rotating about an axis, assumed equal and opposite to the centripetal force and postulated to account for the phenomena seen by an observer in the rotating body."

Centrifugal force is a fictitious force. Its invention came about as a convenient way to describe an outward force felt in a rotating frame of reference. Unfortunately, this leads to a common misconception that many people have, that misconception being the actual existence of such a force. Instead, centrifugal force is really inertia - a body wants to continue along a path tangent to a circle, and if some combination of forces does not keep it on that path then it will do as such. For example, a book on a dashboard will slide when you turn a corner - there is no force pushing that book outwards, it simply heads in a path tangential to the curvature of the turn, due to inertia.
Don't worry, the existence of centrifugal force is a common misconception. What you should be worried about is your unwillingness to accept when your conceptions may be wrong.

Here's centrifugal force right here:

Call it the "centrifugal effect" if you want to be more correct. And if you want to sound like a pedantic ass.
Mankosuki @ Oct 27th 2008 2:18PM
darn, now I'll have to wait longer to not buy the game.
Ian @ Oct 27th 2008 2:46PM
I dunno they look pretty similar to me, and if you saw them and they weren't next to each other you'd probably think it was the same game.
Zack @ Oct 27th 2008 3:04PM
Sarcasm is lost on you, apparently.
Ian @ Oct 27th 2008 4:47PM
And a statement with no sarcasm is lost on you. Theres no implication, I was stating an opinion.
Erik Stroud @ Oct 27th 2008 3:34PM
Haha, I like how they look almost exactly the same just from a slightly different angle.
Sonic_13 @ Oct 27th 2008 3:36PM
When I first saw the two boxarts, before reading the article, I though that they were the same game, just with different boxarts for the 360 and Wii versions.
Mathew Robinson @ Oct 27th 2008 6:03PM
I like the Wii's more, which is suprising because I rarely like the box art for alot of Wii games.
Alvin @ Oct 27th 2008 10:11PM
i love to go and see the Baja Races, they are pretty interesting
BenHo @ Oct 27th 2008 11:46PM
Who cares? they both look ugly.
Densha @ Oct 29th 2008 8:43PM
who cares?
Baja 1000 ToG is a piee of crap while Baja EoC is amazing, too bad is not coming to Wii, so i'll play it on my PS3

how about this you dousche! by reading your reply to mine i would assume you understood what i was talking about right? then why the fuck try and correct me? you just make yourself look like a prim and proper dumbass pushing your glasses up higher on your nose so your bi-focals let your retina focus harder on the spelling/word choice of somebody commenting on an article. you are a waste of inteligence.... try and get laid correcting every dumb blonde you see. Or try correcting everybody in general every time you notice an incorrect pronunciation or use of a word and you will go nowhere in life and simply be an unpleasent person to be around you know? i hope you do Ed, you dilldoa.
