Wii Fanboy Review: World of Goo

Read on and find out!

Developed by 2D Boy, there's no other game on the planet like World of Goo. Clever, stylish and unique are some of the adjectives one could easily throw at the game. It's constantly engaging and constantly challenging, and easily the best WiiWare game I've played yet. With LostWinds and Defend Your Castle leaving me floating on cloud 9 after playing them, that's pretty impressive.
So, what's World of Goo all about? Well, the game is divided into 4 different chapters, along with an Epilogue chapter. Within each chapter, you'll find many levels, each offering up their own unique set of challenges. In the beginning, you simply need to build basic structures, but, as you progress, you'll find a variety of obstacles impeding your path, from the variety of goo balls you need to interact with to hazards you must navigate around in later levels. Thankfully, the controls are so intuitive that getting into the game and playing is a snap.
How does one play the game? With the Wiimote. That's it. You simply point your cursor at a goo ball, push and hold in the A button to grab them, then attach them somewhere on your beginning structure, building it toward the pipe that will allow your goo balls to escape the level. It's as simple as that and in the game's simplicity, you will find an experience that any breathing human being can enjoy. Seriously, if you play this and don't enjoy it, get yourself examined by a doctor. You may be insane in the membrane.
In the end, the only thing we can fault World of Goo with is its price. And, really, that's not even that big of a deal. For an experience such as this, $15 is a small price to pay. If you're a fan of unique games, support 2D Boy and download World of Goo. You'll be thoroughly surprised at how wonderful the game is.
Final score: 9.5/10

Is there any advantage to the Wii version over the PC one? If the PC version doesn't have DRM then I'm probably going with that. No point in getting a locked down wiiware copy when a DRM-free PC version is available (especially since Mac and Linux ports are in the works, according to 2D Boy's website).

not verified, but i heard there were multiplayer options in the wii version as opposed to steam - also, steam is more expensive?
TWOO DEE @ Oct 14th 2008 6:06PM
confirmed it supports up to 4 players
Genome4824 @ Oct 15th 2008 3:58AM
ok seriously... this is what I've always wanted on the Wii
it's the best puzzle solving game I can imagine for the Wii and the physics are awesome. I think the replay value is so much higher on Wii than it is on PC believe me
Oneiroi @ Oct 14th 2008 3:30PM
How long does it take to finish?
How is the replay value?
Calvin @ Oct 14th 2008 3:33PM
It's five dollars cheeper.

i absolutely love this game. i'm currently stuck on 'ode to the bridge builder' but that's fine since i dominated in that goo corp. section (i think my record is something like 16 meters before it toppled, leaving some canadian at the top).

looks pretty good, but lets hope its worth the 1500 Wii points. i, personally, will be waiting about a day or two until i see some reviews. after that I'll make a decision from that point. but other then that it looks pretty damn addicting!
rouroniJohn @ Oct 14th 2008 4:18PM
this game looks crazy awesome.
but what do i do with the 500 left over wii points?
can you add to a wii points card?
Tom @ Oct 14th 2008 4:35PM
Well the extra 500 points can be left on your Wii until your purchase another game. You can also add on other Wii points cards so that you would have 2500 points or 4500 or however many point you want really.
Does that answer your question?
TWOO DEE @ Oct 14th 2008 5:00PM
i believe kid icarus is 500 points :P
Evan @ Oct 14th 2008 5:10PM
Don't forget to keep 1000 points handy for Cave Story when it's released.
Rich @ Oct 14th 2008 5:27PM
Or you can spend the 500 on the nifty Defend you Castle, Mega Man 2 or Sonic. There are a bunch of 500 point games well worth it.
That's a good topic; What is the best way to spend 2000pts? With new Wiiware like Goo and Defend you Castle or some classic arcade like Pac-Man, Galaga, Donkey Kong and Punch out! Or 3 great shmups like Blazing Lazers, R-Type and Dead Moon. and all with out having that annoying 100pts left over just taunting you to put more money in.

How does the multiplayer work? Is it fun?
Rich @ Oct 15th 2008 8:52AM
I'm not sure how the multiplayer works. So far I can work both controllers co-op like in Defend your Castle but there doesnt seem to be any turns or any benefit to having a second person. Is there a different multi player mode?
Gundam_Warrior @ Oct 14th 2008 5:21PM
How memory does the game take up?
TWOO DEE @ Oct 14th 2008 6:05PM
nintendo's wiiware site doesn't specify but i know it's under 300 blocks
can someone confirm?
Moleculo @ Oct 14th 2008 7:00PM
I think it was a little over 300 in fact, maybe around 340? It is big.
Gundam_Warrior @ Oct 14th 2008 7:09PM
oh well. Guess I won't be downloading it yet until the storage solution comes.
Marcelo @ Oct 14th 2008 7:16PM
All the more reason for me to get off my butt and finish Lost Winds in one fell swoop. Too bad the game is ridiculously boring.
Sonic_13 @ Oct 14th 2008 7:45PM
WiiWare World lists the game as 320 blocks (and 2 more for the save file).

Anyone know what the objective in Regurgitation Station is? I've built up out of the mouth and to the top of the sky but still dont see an exit.

Eye have no idea.

Since it's not out in Europe for Wii until next year I've had to buy it on Steam. Great fun!
