TGS08: First footage of The Another World [update]
Update: First images of the book and the package it all comes in have made their way online! Head past the break to catch a glimpse.
Level-5 and Studio Ghibli's upcoming DS RPG, Ni no Kuni: The Another World is sure to be a big success. Why? Uh, have you watched the video above yet? The game looks awesome. With the visual presence that Studio Ghibli provides with its great animation and wonderful character design, along with Level-5's RPG experience, this is going to be a game you want to keep your eyes on.
Know what else is cool? The game is going to come with a custom spellbook specific to that copy of the game. What's inside? Spells, of course (among other things, such as a bestiary)! You can see a bit of it in the video above, where the weird symbols are drawn. After the video, hit up this link to read the Level-5 president's interview with Famitsu about the game.

Oh my gosh...that was beautiful! Here's hoping for a North American release, so that I have another great game to look forward to!
Jo @ Oct 9th 2008 3:19PM
Wow. I enjoy Studio Ghibli movies, and in combination with Level 5 I expect more than a positive result! The footage feels magical :)

"For Nintendo DS and Another Platform"
...Right there at the end on the info screen. ;)
leonus11 @ Oct 9th 2008 3:37PM
you understand japanese? if you do (and if it isn't against DSfanboys TOS) then maybe you can translate what the whole video said (if its no trouble to you of course)?
sixtyfps @ Oct 9th 2008 3:54PM
I'm sorry to get your hopes up regarding a translation of every passage in this trailer, but the bit about being multi-platform is written in plain English.
hellhammer @ Oct 10th 2008 4:10AM
Yeah, I saw that too.
At first I thought it was weird, but now that I think about it more, the new FF Crystal Chronicals is going to be multiplat with both DS and the Wii. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this does also..
chibi_wings @ Oct 11th 2008 11:31AM
or they could just be talking about the DSi. Just I thought.
elsng @ Oct 9th 2008 3:30PM
I have to say WOW to the animation to be like so on the DS.
thesimplicity @ Oct 9th 2008 3:44PM
Looks cool, but what's with the encoding? It looks like someone botched a DVD rip and forget to set the frame rate properly. Or maybe it's whatever hosting service the video is at.
sixtyfps @ Oct 9th 2008 3:55PM
Faulty handling of interlacing is a much more likely culprit than frame rate in this case.
BlackPeregrin @ Oct 9th 2008 4:04PM
The cut-scenes look very Miyazaki.
The graphics themselves are quite beautiful.
MechaBouncer @ Oct 9th 2008 4:23PM
This looks to be the most beautiful game for the DS yet! What's more, it looks like it takes a page from Lost Magic's playbook, which I think is a great idea. Despite the poor AI, Lost Magic was a great game with unique gameplay. I'm glad to see that another game looks to use a similar rune drawing method of spell casting. I so hope this gets a US (or some kind of English) release.
chibi_wings @ Oct 9th 2008 5:16PM
just wow. never thought a DS could do that! Let's hope the graphics don't cut away at the game's length. As much as I like nice graphics, I don't like them if they are the sole focus of the game and leave me with a short (10 hour) experience. But since this is Level 5, I have high hopes. ^^
Ethan @ Oct 9th 2008 6:47PM
I already love the little lantern dude.
Red @ Oct 9th 2008 7:24PM
I'd be thrilled if I thought it was coming over here. Still looks pretty, though.
Abbii @ Oct 9th 2008 7:52PM
This game looks beautiful but I'm hesitant about the book idea, especially for a portable game. I don't want to have to haul around a special book with me, nor do I want to have to set a game aside because I'm out and don't have the book with me. I think they should at least have the option of viewing the book in the game.
chispito @ Oct 9th 2008 10:37PM
This is going to sell bajillions in Japan. Ghibli + DS + RPG = love.
Josh @ Oct 9th 2008 11:05PM
Level-5 is making a real brand name for themselves...But I'm still having trouble separating them from Square-Enix (or even Sony) in my mind.
Cayt @ Oct 9th 2008 11:20PM
I actually love the idea of the book that comes with the game, though it may hurt our chances of it coming stateside.
Matt G. @ Oct 9th 2008 11:28PM
This totally reminds me of Drifting Away (I think that was the name of it). The animated film with No-Face in it. Talk about engrossing.
sixtyfps @ Oct 10th 2008 12:02AM
Spirited Away / Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi
dreamparacite @ Oct 10th 2008 12:54AM
Love studio ghibli films, this will basically be an interactive one, can't wait!
chibi_wings @ Oct 11th 2008 11:34AM
those books look gorgeous, but now I wonder what the price will be like, I hope it isn't more then 40 =/
eleefece @ Oct 11th 2008 12:22PM
It looks beautiful, i just hope it last about +40hrs
RootiePatootie @ Oct 16th 2008 4:58PM
WOW... And I too was immediately reminded of Spirited Away, one of my favs. I have to admit I feel 50/50 about the spell book idea. Since I don't take my DS out and about as much as some it might not be a big problem for me, but on the other hand, I can see where it would for many DS owners/players and even myself for those times I DO travel w/my DS. But no matter, color me impressed and very interested!
bud @ Oct 17th 2008 12:53AM
I wonder if the other platform is an iPhone.
Grey Acumen @ Dec 12th 2008 7:48PM
my initial reaction is to scoff at this, but I suppose it could be doable.
Shin @ Oct 17th 2008 8:02AM
Wantwantwantwantwant!!!! I'm actually thinking of going LEGIT when this comes out and BUYING IT. *starts saving up*
giggity @ Oct 26th 2008 8:01AM
it looks amazing. i love studio ghibli movies but ... is nobody else bothered by the title?
"the another world", i hope they translate it to something a little more english, instead of engrish.
Grey Acumen @ Dec 12th 2008 7:47PM
Yes, with the drawing of the symbols being such a prevalent part of this game, any other platform has to have some type of pointer, so that limits it to DS lite, DSi, Wii, and PC. Somehow I don't see this coming to PSP anytime soon.
