First Mega Man 9 DLC available
The first two downloadable content updates for Mega Man 9 are officially available today. The first, Endless Attack Mode, offers a new, never-ending endurance-style level, for 300 Wii Points. The second, more widely discussed update, adds a playable Proto Man to the game, for 200 points. Proto Man can slide and charge his weapon (though the blast isn't as large as a fully-charged Mega Buster), and he has a shield that blocks shots while jumping, but he also has double the recoil and takes double the damage of Mega Man. Furthermore, he can't use the Shop and he has no story of his own. Most importantly -- and about which we are the most pleased -- the Proto Man whistle plays at the beginning of every life or every level. You can read more about the details of the Proto Man DLC here, or, of course, you could go download it! Just look in the "Downloadable Content" area of the game instead of somewhere in the Wii Shop. You wouldn't want to feel as stupid as we did.

The return of sliding was pretty cool, but otherwise Proto Man just felt like a higher difficulty setting. Still cool, it just feels like it should have been 100 points as opposed to 200. The endless attack, however, is insanely addicting, and it's going to be something I keep coming back to for weeks.

I have to agree with you there, Fletcher. The least important part of this DLC is also the very coolest. I used to think I was the only one who geeked out over Proto Man's whistle. Luckily, I've since found that I'm not alone.

You are definitely not alone on that!

I bought Endless Stage and it's really fun & challenging. Not like the other stages that you know a pattern so you laugh if you die, instead of being angry like if you were playing the same stage over again.

jeez; I feel like I've been sucker punched!
Been blowing off the whole MM hype train for the longest time, finally caved in, downloaded and played MM1 to completion and downloaded and played MM2 to completion, both for the first time since the NES days, downloaded and played MM9, promptly died, again and again, and somehow enjoyed it all.
Was looking forward to the promise of playing as Proto Man, with a shield, charge shot, and slide move I figured I'd be good to go and really enjoy the game.
BUT NO
The 2x damage is annoying, fine, but who would have thought they'd have taken the SHOP AWAY!
If I wanted a harder difficulty setting (which, clearly, I don't) I would have waited for that to come out later.
GAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!

My only beef with Proto mode is no challenges. . .

It sure would be nice if they released MM3 for virtual console.
Though this prospect of Endless Attack sounds like fun.
Roto13 @ Oct 6th 2008 10:28PM
I'm sure it'll hit the virtual console eventually.

Oh it will come out eventually. I'm sure most if not all MM games will come out eventually. They just don't want to take the hype away from 9 just yet.
