Disappointed as you may be (or not) about the delayed release of the DSi in the United States, at least it gives you time to save up the funds to snag one ... if you're planning on getting one at all, that is. Will you? If so, are you going to wait for the official release wherever you are, or will you import from Japan?
It's a wait-and-see-what-happens for me. The SD slot, extra memory and download stuff could make it necessary to get a DSi if new games start depending on them, but the cameras are just gimmicks.
Same here....and since my DS Lite is only ~6 months old, I REALLY hope all the new games don't depend on this. :-/ I'd rather wait til a while new system comes out, not just one with added bulk.
Depends on if new games coming out will actually need the camera, or will have the option of using it. If they need the camera, i must probably get it, if its optional, ill stick with my Lite with broken shoulder buttons =D
Agreed. They didn't improve enough on it to make buying one worth it. I sure wish Nintendo would start thinking inside the box. They've done so many unusual things with their systems that they've forgotten to improve on what's on the inside: like the graphics and such. Grrr Nintendo
I don't see the changes as a good thing. I use the GBA slot a lot and although the SD slot will be interesting (as will the store thing) they haven't really shown what they'll be doing with it - and I have a feeling it'll be disappointing.
When it comes out in green, yes~ By then my DS will have probably broken anyway lol but, yes, I need to complete the rare item collection! (green phat, ice lite - which looks plenty teal to me :P)
you guys are all talking about the camera and the mp3 player in it
list that's not all that's gunna be there there will be apps and games you can down load (probably gba's too if that whole no gba slot got you down) its more convenient then carrying about all 3 there will be an internet browser on it
the things gunna be awesome
ill get one AND keep my lite its not like im losing anything except cash
I said thanks but no thanks to that redesign to nowhere. Seriously, though; with a 0.3 megapixel camera, a virtual console that's likely going to be sparse in worthwhile offerings, and screens that are larger without displaying graphics in a higher resolution, every added feature has more going against it than for it. I'll happily wait for the DS2 or a PSP Brite in a color I want bundled with a game I want.
I'll be getting it, I never upgraded to the DS lite, so this will be my first new DS since my original one when they first came out. Hate to retire the old boy, but, the features are to good for me. I know its not a big 'wow' now, but just wait till people/games use these camera's, SD slots for features...
Right now I don't see enough enticement to get it. Everyone's assuming that the music playback is mp3, but I've read that it will be AAC. I don't use iTunes, so that would be near useless to me.
Unless some exclusive killer app comes out for it, can't see the need to upgrade.
Will the Wi-Fi contain WPA? Will the built-in browser support Flash etc.? Is the ROM updatable, so later they would add some new features via firmware update?
I like the new features, but I hoped for more. I don't know whether I'm getting it. If a nice limited edition design comes out, then I might swap my current DS for DSi. But I'm definitely not in a hurry to get it asap. Time will tell...
I dont understand why there is so much negativity for the new DS. DSi is there for the DS owners who want to bring one more DS to the family (my lite will be going to my sister). Everyone that complain about gba slot already have at least one gba compatible device so i dont see what the problem is. If i want to play gba games I'll do it on the lite or the psp. Bdw 0.3mpx doesn't necessarily mean low quality (it depends on the type of the sensor). I wont be using it 'cos i have a 5mpx se. Anyway I'll definitely get it when it comes here and I think most of the people that now speak bad about it will get it too :D
There's not a single hands-on impression for it, so I don't know. By the time it hits the US, there will be plenty of information to help make a decision. I hope the DS Ware stuff will be great and that's what's likely to make it a buy for me.
I really don't see why people are making blanket assumptions about the DSi. We really don't know much about how any of its features are going to be used.
I'd like to get one, since it seems that a BG VC will be possible through it, as well as the camera acting as the/a next gimmick for WarioWare (of which I am (mostly) a whore, yes). Unfortunately, the lack of a GBA/expansion slot guarantees that it's not _everything_ the DS is able to be, so a lite will be on my mind, as well (which'd be a decent tide-over until DSi actually comes out here). Not gonna import, since what I'd particularly want it for (the downloadables) prolly wouldn't be supported here 'til it's launched domestically.
Now, here's the real question: Will the lite get a screen size boost sometime between now and after the DSi's boom? I'd feel really dumb to get a lite only to have a better one pop out.
Definitely not at first. Probably only if something happens, like my lite dies or a super awesome game comes out that uses the cameras that I just -have- to play.
There is a pretty good possibility. I may hand my current DS lite to my wife who has found herself enjoying it a lot. Then I'll grab the DSi. However, I really will miss the GBA slot since I never purchased an Advance. If I do get the DSi, it will depend--as others have pointed out--on how much they use the new technology in games. If not having one limits me from some great games, I'll probably pick it up. Let's not forget, though, the price isn't THAT small.
Right now, I'm undecided. I will probably end up getting it, but probably not for a while after it releases in the US. I didn't get my DS until last Christmas. I'm too poor and I have other things I still want to buy, such another Wiimote & Nunchuk. I also need to see whether the new games will work only on the DSi, how well the browser works, and what kinds of things will be sold at the store.
If it supports WPA, then yeah, I'm getting it. (I won't downgrade my router to WEP, and I can't get Nintendo's WiFi USB connector working on my system, so at the moment I'm completely offline.)
The only DS I own at this point is the old phat. Having said that, I just might consider this one as I'd like to upgrade. The only thing that might keep me away is the price tag.
If I can get the money together before the JP release date, I'm importing. Otherwise I might just wait till the US release date. I'm definitely getting it though. For me, it's just a waste a money, especially since there's not games that use the DSi's features yet. But I still want it.
I don't see any reason to buy one. No use for the camera, slightly larger screen with same resolution is not good. SD card is only useful ifthey add video playback capability. VideoWOULD sway me to buy one.
I've already bought ... let's see ... an original Gameboy, a Gameboy pocket, a Gameboy color, an original GBA, a GBA SP, an original DS, a pink original DS, a DS Lite and a pink DS Lite from these mofos. So on the one hand, my track record suggests that I absolutely will buy a DSi. But on the other hand, I think I have spent enough money on negligible improvements. If I'd just skipped the Pocket, one Phat and one Lite, I'd have enough money right now to buy an XBox 360 at Costco. (Well, not really; I'd have wasted it on something else. But still.)
So, no. I do not need or want a camera on my DS; I just got a new iPod nano, so why would I use a clunky-ass DS to play music; and I like having the GBA slot (though I don't use it that much these days).
What people seem to be forgetting is that, yes, the DSi's price is higher than the DS lite's, but Japanese price equivalents are higher than US prices. When it launches over here, I doubt it will be $180. I'd guesstimate $150, maaaybe $160. Our stuff is always conversionally cheaper, for some reason.

As it stands right now, I will not be getting one. I liked the GBA slot, the cameras are too low quality, but I do like the idea of the SD card slot.
Someone's really going to have to convince me into getting one.
Ross @ Oct 5th 2008 8:22PM
Yeah, same here, i'm a huge Ninty fan but this.. no, just no.
Danny @ Oct 5th 2008 10:39AM
I will happily get one. Even though I'm satisfied with my Lite this will just better. I'm just a bit disappointing with the same D-Pad.
Santaji @ Oct 5th 2008 10:41AM
If i was still a Nintendo fan, i'd get it
Venom @ Oct 5th 2008 10:44AM
Not a chance. I have a better camera and an mp3 player on my cellphone, while my DSLite works just fine. A waste of money, in my case... =/
Ashe @ Oct 5th 2008 10:57AM
No way am I getting this. My DSLite is perfectly fine and the extra features on the DSi do not interest me at all.
spyker @ Oct 5th 2008 10:55AM
My phay is getting pretty old. I probably will.
Puddles @ Oct 5th 2008 11:04AM
It's not worth the upgrade for me. I have a digital camera and mp3 player, so I don't need those functions in my DS.
Igor @ Oct 5th 2008 11:05AM
I might be tempted to get one if they upgrade the wifi on it, as it stands my wireless N router is too leet sauce for the ds.

I'll be getting one, since I was going to buy a Lite anyway. Since the DSi has been announced though, I may as well go for the latest technology.
elsng @ Oct 5th 2008 11:17AM
Lite still works well enough to serve its purpose. As it stands, no. (Too expensive for extra gimmicky add-ons)
Clandaith @ Oct 5th 2008 11:18AM
Nope. My Lite works just fine, thank you.
Now, if it had a better processor and higher resolution, yes, I would get one in a heartbeat.

No for me. My DS Lite was a gift from all my friends for my birthday a year ago and the DSi features don't appeal to me in the slightest.
Besides I barely play my DS as it is. I've found myself playing my PSP more. ^^;;
Matt Madeiro @ Oct 5th 2008 1:13PM

I envy the SD slot, sure, but it isn't enough to warrant the purchase of an entirely new handheld.

I think it will depend on how what games come out for the DSi if they are DSi only and how well my current DS is holding up.
I have had my DS for over a year now and as I take real good care of my electronics it is still in perfect working order but everything falls apart.
Then again, I still have my GBSP in its case somewhere...

As for me, I will probably keep my Lite and get the DSi. The main reason being the SD card slot. I can see Nintendo utilizing that in the future.
